Research Day

INTRODUCTION

Medication Therapy Management (MTM) aims to boost medication adherence, primarily focusing on seniors covered by Medicare and Medicaid. However, vulnerable populations like children with medical complexity or disabilities on medication (MCDM) lack access to this service. Previous research using the NHIS database identified disparities in medication adherence rates across socioeconomic levels, education, and ethnicity among caregivers. To investigate if these disparities persist in our community, we're developing a survey to assess medication adherence rates in children with MCDM. We conducted a literature review to create a questionnaire analyzing the impact of MTM services on children with MCDM.

Chest Binding Alters Thoracic Anatomy In Transmasculine Youth, Julienne Ryland, Jeannel Miclat, Diana Peterson May 2024

Chest Binding Alters Thoracic Anatomy In Transmasculine Youth, Julienne Ryland, Jeannel Miclat, Diana Peterson

Research Day

Introduction:

With the recent legislation restricting gender-affirming care for minors, more mechanical means of gender-confirming methods are being used as a substitute. For adolescent transmasculine people, this includes chest binding, designed to flatten breast tissue and give a more streamlined masculine appearance. Chest binding is a relatively inexpensive and widely available technique to affirm gender identity without the need for healthcare professional involvement. Although chest binders are recommended to be worn for less than 8 hours daily, transmasculine youth have been documented wearing their chest binders for upwards of 18-21 hours a day. This consistent pressure on their chest essentially …

The Effect Of State And Trait Anxiety On Pain-Pressure Threshold, Scott Lowe, Christian T. Hughey, Kathryn E. Downing, Breana L. Fair

Research Day

Background:

The global burden of persistent pain is substantial, affecting up to 30% of the world's population. Despite growing awareness, challenges persist with accurate pain measurement, limiting research and clinical efforts. One method to assess pain perception is the Pain-Pressure Threshold (PPT), indicating the pressure at which pain is reported. Anxiety, comprising state and trait anxiety, has been suggested as a potential influencer of PPT, yet its precise impact remains uncertain. State anxiety is defined as a "transient state of arousal subjectively experienced as anxiety" Trait anxiety is “an individual's tendency to appraise situations as threatening, avoid anxiety-provoking situations, and …

Research Day

INTRODUCTION: While the prevalence of mental illness is comparable between rural and urban populations, adults in rural locations receive mental health treatment on a less frequent basis, and when received, the care offered is of lower quality relative to urban adults. Underutilization of mental health services in rural areas is a serious, well-documented problem and has been attributed to several possible factors, including geographic inaccessibility, reduced access to appropriate or culturally competent providers, lack of anonymity when seeking treatment, and reluctance to seek help due to discrimination and stigma. However, rural individuals may also remain reluctant to initiate treatment, possibly …

BACKGROUND: Awareness with paralysis (AWP) is memory recall during neuromuscular blockade (NMB) and can cause significant psychological harm. Decades of effort and rigorous trials have been conducted to prevent AWP in the operating room, where prevalence is 0.1-0.2%. By contrast, AWP in mechanically ventilated emergency department (ED) patients is common, with estimated prevalence of 3.3-7.4% among survivors given NMB. Longer-acting NMB use is a critical risk for AWP, and we have shown an association between ED rocuronium use and increased AWP prevalence. As NMB are given to more than 90% of ED patients during tracheal intubation, this trial provides a …

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of adult blindness and partial vision loss in modern society for hyperglycemic patients. Accordingly, new treatment options are imperative to the overall reduction of DR prevalence and the ongoing progression of already affected candidates. There are many diseases that are the direct result of specific inflammatory processes. In this literature, DR is looked at as a potential disease that can be alleviated by targeting caspase 1/ interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) signaling pathways and reducing cytokine mobilization within retinal tissues. Caspase-1 is thought to be upregulated during retinal capillary degeneration …

A Radiologic Analysis: Relationships Of The Thoracic Spine To Aid Palpation Of The Thoracic Transverse Processes, Christopher Baker, Darshan Patel, Michael B. Roberts, Kristie Petree, Randall L. Mcgill

Research Day

Introduction: In the field of osteopathic manipulative medicine, palpation is an important skill used by physicians to localize structures to diagnose and treat patients with somatic dysfunction throughout the musculoskeletal system. Specifically, in the thoracic spine, physicians can use the more superficial spinous process of each vertebra to assist in locating the deeper, more challenging to palpate, transverse process of the vertebra. Historically, the “rule of threes”, proposed by Mitchell et al in 1979, describing the relationships between spinous processes and transverse processes of the thoracic spine has been taught in osteopathic medical schools. However, another model was more recently …

AMWA's goal is to improve access and exposure to sex and gender differences in healthcare as few medical schools educate students on these differences. The poster summarizes the reviewed literature on the prevalence, diagnosis, referral for, prevention, clinical presentation, and treatment of ADHD with a goal to reduce sex and …

Reasons For Not Refilling Medications: A Research Proposal, Tori E. Abdalla, Frederick J. Goldstein May 2023

Reasons For Not Refilling Medications: A Research Proposal, Tori E. Abdalla, Frederick J. Goldstein

Research Day

INTRODUCTION:

It is estimated that medication non-adherence costs the United States approximately 528 billion dollars annually. Of that amount, it is estimated that only 50% of medications are adhered to for treatment of chronic diseases. Targeting improvement of a single aspect of medication non-adherence, e.g., refill compliance, could increase successful treatment of any medical condition where this a problem. Several broad solutions have been proposed, such as provider education, increased communication, and technology-based interventions; however, without knowing why patients do not refill their medications, providers might not know which solution(s) to initiate.

OBJECTIVES:

The aim of the proposed study is …
