Melorheostosis And Central Giant Cell Granuloma Of The Mandible In A 15-Year-Old Girl, Kenneth M. Anderson, W. H. Shintaku, Molly S. Rosebush, Yeshwant B. Rawal, E. S. Woodard

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Melorheostosis is a nonhereditary bone dysplasia primarily affecting the appendicular skeleton. Because clinical and histologic features are often nonspecific, the diagnosis is often based on the radiographic presentation. Involvement of the craniofacial skeleton is rare. We describe a case of a 15-year-old girl with appendicular and craniofacial melorheostosis with adjacent central giant cell granuloma. We discuss the possible significance of this previously unreported finding.

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Herein we compare the effects of perturbations in the Kölliker–Fuse nucleus (KFN) and the lateral (LPBN) and medial (MPBN) parabrachial nuclei on the coordination of breathing and swallowing. Cannula was chronically implanted in goats through which ibotenic acid (IA) was injected while awake. Swallows in late expiration (E) always reset while swallows in early inspiration (I) never reset the respiratory rhythm. Before cannula implantation, all other E and I swallows did not reset the respiratory rhythm, and had small effects on E and I duration and tidal volume (VT). However, after cannula implantation in the MPBN and …

Guadalupe Avalos - Filling Caskets More Quickly Than Cribs?: A Comparison Of Infant Mortality In Milwaukee And Costa Rica, Guadalupe Avalos Jul 2013

Guadalupe Avalos - Filling Caskets More Quickly Than Cribs?: A Comparison Of Infant Mortality In Milwaukee And Costa Rica, Guadalupe Avalos

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013

Metropolitan Milwaukee had infant mortality rates at 9.5 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2010, according to the Milwaukee Health Department. This rate is a reversal of earlier decades. Between 2005 and 2008, Milwaukee experienced its highest infant mortality rate at 11 deaths per 1,000 live births. Disparities are most evident between African-Americans and Whites. Therefore, most explanations of infant mortality rates are compared between the two backgrounds. Since 2008, infant mortality rates have dwindled; however, the rates remain unacceptably high. A rate of 9.5 deaths per live births is detrimental and a public health issue.

By analyzing causes that …

Racial And Ethnic Variations In Waiting Times For Emergency Department Visits Related To Nontraumatic Dental Conditions In The United States, Christopher Okunseri, Elaye Okunseri, Cesar A. Chilmaza, Shazeen Harunani, Qun Xiang, Aniko Szabo

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Researchers have documented an association between waiting times in emergency departments (EDs) and quality of care for medical conditions, but little is known about trends and factors associated with waiting times for ED visits related to nontraumatic dental conditions (NTDCs). The authors examined trends in waiting time and associated factors for NTDC-related ED visits in the United States.

Methods

The authors analyzed data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care survey for 1997 to 2007, excluding 2001 and 2002 owing to lack of information about waiting times. The authors used a survey-weighted linear regression of log-transformed waiting-time model to …

Nr2a- And Nr2b-Containing Nmda Receptors In The Prelimbic Medial Prefrontal Cortex Differentially Mediate Trace, Delay, And Contextual Fear Conditioning, Marieke R. Gilmartin, Janine L. Kwapis, Fred J. Helmstetter Jun 2013

Nr2a- And Nr2b-Containing Nmda Receptors In The Prelimbic Medial Prefrontal Cortex Differentially Mediate Trace, Delay, And Contextual Fear Conditioning, Marieke R. Gilmartin, Janine L. Kwapis, Fred J. Helmstetter

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR) in the prelimbic medial prefrontal cortex (PL mPFC) is necessary for the acquisition of both trace and contextual fear memories, but it is not known how specific NR2 subunits support each association. The NR2B subunit confers unique properties to the NMDAR and may differentially regulate these two fear memories. Here we show that NR2A-containing NMDARs mediate trace, delay, and contextual fear memories, but NR2B-containing NMDARs are required only for trace conditioning, consistent with a role for PL mPFC in working memory.

Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder At A Pediatric Hospital: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Norah L. Johnson, Dana Rodriguez

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

This review of literature describes the behaviors of hospitalized children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that health care providers find challenging. It also identifies strategies used to address these challenging behaviors. The systematic review of literature identified 34 articles from databases on health care of challenging behaviors of children with ASD. The review identified four categories of challenging behaviors (non-compliance, hyperactivity, sensory defensiveness, self-injury) and several strategies for reducing these behaviors. Partnering with parents to develop strategies is important for children with ASD to deliver timely and safe care.

Nontraumatic Oral Health Classification For Alternative Use Of Syndromic Data, Sherry Burrer, Howard Burkom, Christopher Okunseri, Laurie Barker, Valerie Robison Apr 2013

Nontraumatic Oral Health Classification For Alternative Use Of Syndromic Data, Sherry Burrer, Howard Burkom, Christopher Okunseri, Laurie Barker, Valerie Robison

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

There is increasing demand for ways to use syndromic surveillance data for population health surveillance. The authors developed a nontraumatic oral health classification that could provide timely burden estimates of oral health-related visits to North Carolina (NC) emergency departments (EDs) using BioSense syndromic data. A combination of literature review, input by subject matter experts, and analysis of syndromic data was employed to create a classification that used select chief complaint text and ICD-9-CM codes for visit inclusion and exclusion criteria. Visit estimates created using this classification could contribute to policy decisions aimed at reducing this unnecessary burden on NC EDs.

Changes In Orthodontic Treatment Modalities In The Past 20 Years: Exploring The Link Between Technology And Scientific Evidence, T. Gerard Bradley

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Statement of the issue: Is there a link between the many perceived advances in orthodontic techniques/therapy and science in the past 20 years? The purpose of this paper is to take five topics and match the perceptions with the scientific evidence. The variety of appliances and the swings in treatment philosophy have been dramatic, including the swing from extraction to non-extraction therapy, the introduction of space-age wires, appliances that grow mandibles, the introduction and extraordinary growth of Invisalign, and reduced friction brackets to reduce treatment time, all with claims by manufacturers of better results than ever before. The focus is …

Principles Of Periodontology, Andrew R. Dentino, Seokwoo Lee, Jason Mailhot, Arthur F. Hefti Feb 2013

Principles Of Periodontology, Andrew R. Dentino, Seokwoo Lee, Jason Mailhot, Arthur F. Hefti

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Periodontal diseases are among the most common diseases affecting humans. Dental biofilm is a contributor to the etiology of most periodontal diseases. It is also widely accepted that immunological and inflammatory responses to biofilm components are manifested by signs and symptoms of periodontal disease. The outcome of such interaction is modulated by risk factors (modifiers), either inherent (genetic) or acquired (environmental), significantly affecting the initiation and progression of different periodontal disease phenotypes. While definitive genetic determinants responsible for either susceptibility or resistance to periodontal disease have yet to be identified, many factors affecting the pathogenesis have been described, including smoking, …

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Few electromagnetic articulography (EMA) datasets are publicly available, and none have focused systematically on non-native accented speech. We introduce a kinematic-acoustic database of speech from 40 (gender and dialect balanced) participants producing upper-Midwestern American English (AE) L1 or Mandarin Accented English (MAE) L2 (Beijing or Shanghai dialect base). The Marquette University EMA-MAE corpus will be released publicly to help advance research in areas such as pronunciation modeling, acoustic-articulatory inversion, L1-L2 comparisons, pronunciation error detection, and accent modification training. EMA data were collected at a 400 Hz sampling rate with synchronous audio using the NDI Wave System. Articulatory sensors were placed …

Speech Sensorimotor Learning Through A Virtual Vocal Tract, Jeffrey J. Berry, Cassandra North, Benjamin Meyers, Michael T. Johnson Jan 2013

Speech Sensorimotor Learning Through A Virtual Vocal Tract, Jeffrey J. Berry, Cassandra North, Benjamin Meyers, Michael T. Johnson

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Studies of speech sensorimotor learning often manipulate auditory feedback by modifying isolated acoustic parameters such as formant frequency or fundamental frequency using near real-time resynthesis of a participant's speech. An alternative approach is to engage a participant in a total remapping of the sensorimotor working space using a virtual vocal tract. To support this approach for studying speech sensorimotor learning we have developed a system to control an articulatory synthesizer using electromagnetic articulography data. Articulator movement data from the NDI Wave System are streamed to a Maeda articulatory synthesizer. The resulting synthesized speech provides auditory feedback to the participant. This …

Dental Student Indebtedness: Where Did It Come From And Where Will It Lead?, Gary L. Stafford

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Today’s dental school graduates are burdened by an ever-increasing amount of student loan debt from both their undergraduate and predoctoral educations. Although considered to be multifactorial in origin, this article explores the microeconomic theory of supply and demand as a source for rising tuition costs and subsequent educational debt. The historical context for the cost of a dental education is provided, and serious questions are posed about how this indebtedness might impact the future of the profession.
