The thymus generally presents as a sail-shaped soft-tissue opacity on thoracic radiographs in young, pre-pubescent dogs. After puberty, lymphatic tissue is replaced by adipose tissue and can usually no longer be identified on radiographs; however, thymic remnants have often been observed in adult dogs. The objective of this retrospective descriptive study was to investigate the incidence of thymic remnants using thoracic radiographs and to analyze the incidence in dogs by age, sex and breed. This study investigated whether stress responsiveness in dogs is more significant when the owner is present or absent during a veterinary examination. The study consisted of two experimental groups: "owner absent" and "owner present." Both groups consisted of 25 dogs each, totaling 50 dogs observed. A veterinarian and veterinary assistant recorded the dog's behavioral and physiological stress responses. Each group's behavioral and physiological stress-induced responses were compared using a Fischer Exact test and an Analysis of Covariance. Comparison Of Biomechanical Properties Associated With The Diameter And Insertion Depth Of Bone Anchors In The Femoral Condyle Of Toy Breed Cadaver Dogs, Yun-Hee An, Mu-Young Kim, Hun-Young Yoon

The objective of the present study was to compare the biomechanical properties of implanted bone anchors based on diameter and insertion depth to yield selection criteria for bone anchor size in toy breed dogs. Twenty toy breed dog cadavers weighing < 5 kg underwent placement of five types of veterinary bone anchors (short diameter, short length [SDSL]; short diameter, medium length [SDML]; medium diameter, medium length [MDML]; medium diameter, long length [MDLL]; and long diameter, medium length [LDML]) at a predetermined femoral attachment site. Anchor screw depth/femoral condyle width (FCW) and anchor screw diameter/femoral condyle length (FCL) were measured using radiography. The yield load, Young’s modulus and failure load were measured and the causes of failure for each construct were recorded. The anchor screw depth/FCW was < 50%, 50%–75%, ~50%, and 75%–100% in the SDSL, SDML, MDML, and MDLL groups, respectively. The yield load, Young’s modulus and failure load were higher in the SDML and MDLL groups than in the SDSL and MDML groups. The anchor screw diameter/FCL was 12%–15% and 24%–30% in the SDML and LDML groups, respectively. No differences in biomechanical parameters were found between the SDML and LDML groups. The cause of failure in all constructs was pull-out of the bone anchor, except for distal femur fracture in five LDML constructs. In conclusion, when implanting bone anchors in toy breed dogs, the insertion depth should be > 50% of the FCW, regardless of diameter. Moreover, distal femur fracture can occur if the bone anchor diameter/FCL ratio exceeds 24%.

Twelve pairs of cadaveric pelvic limbs were harvested from skeletally mature dogs. Tibias were randomly assigned pairwise to two study groups: locking buttress screw fixation (LBS) and bone-screw-fastener fixation (BSF). A tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) was performed. Each specimen was positioned in a servohydraulic testing machine to simulate physiological orientation and loading at the mid-point of the stance phase at the walk. Cyclic loading was performed for 30,000 cycles at 4Hz with a peak-load of 1000N. Acquired idiopathic megaoesophagus in dogs is rarely found in Indonesia. In this case report, a dachshund dog was presented with a history of vomiting after eating. Clinical examination, complete blood count, kidney, and liver tests identified only minor dehydration. On observation of the dog after eating, the sign reported as vomiting was confirmed as regurgitation. Radiography and contrast studies identified a significantly dilated oesophagus. With an absence of other clinical abnormalities, the dog was diagnosed with idiopathic megaoesophagus and prescribed treatment with sildenafil twice daily at 0.75mg/kg for five days, along with postural management of feeding. A 3-month-old 13 kg intact female American pit bull dog was presented with a history of chronic sneezing, nasal discharge, oronasal reflux, and aspiration with food and water. Oral examination under general anesthesia revealed a shortened soft palate extended caudally from the hard palate. As a result, bilateral soft palate hypoplasia was diagnosed. The dog was operated upon by using soft palate hinged-flap combined with bilateral buccal mucosal rotation flaps techniques. A four-year old, intact female Labrador Retriever dog was presented with a history and clinical signs of vomiting, anorexia and mild dyspnea. Further laboratory examination, by specific canine pancreatic lipase (cPL) test kit and abdominal ultrasound, indicated acute pancreatitis. Results from thoracic radiography and computerized tomography scan showed masses in the cranial and middle mediastinal areas. A cytology examination revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation with the presence of fungal hyphae whereas Aspergillus niger was isolated and identified. Systemic aspergillosis was diagnosed. Many antifungal drugs were introduced and the clinical outcomes were discussed with careful consideration.

A 3-year-old female Golden Retriever was referred with weakness, tachypnea and dyspnea. An incomplete diaphragmatic silhouette, gas-filled small intestine and pleural effusion in the thoracic cavitywere revealed in radiographs, implying a diaphragmatic hernia. After laparotomy, the abdominalstructureswere gently retrieved into the abdomen and a defect of 2×7 cm2was found. The transverse colonwas used as an autologous tissue flap for the repair of the defect. There were no complications identified for 2 years after surgery. Thus, patching with the transverse colon can be considered as an alternative for treating a defect in patients with a diaphragmatic hernia.

An 11-year-old intact female chow chow dog was presented for evaluation of intermittent vomiting and anorexia for a month. On ultrasonographic examination, gastric pylorus hypertrophy which compressed common bile duct was identified. The gallbladder was significantly enlarged and mucocele was suspected. Cholecystectomy and gastric full thickness biopsy were performed and gastric adenocarcinoma was diagnosed by histopathological examination. Billroth II gastrojejunostomy using thoracoabdominal-stapler (TAstapler) was performed. On surgery, hypertrophied tissue suspected of tumour was also found adjacent to the major duodenal papilla. Canine cranial cruciate ligament ruptures have become common with improved nutrition and nonselective breeding strategies. This study assessed 7 dogs of various breeds and ages with the diagnosis of cranial cruciate ligament ruptures. The triple tibial osteotomy (TTO) method was used to treat the rupture. All of the dogs were admitted to the clinic for varying degrees of lameness. Diagnosis was confirmed using both clinical and radiologic examinations. Body weights of the dogs were between 12 and 65 kg. Informed consent was given by the owners prior to surgery.
