A Study Of Nursing Students And Intrinsic Spirituality, Christine Anderson Madsen
A Study Of Nursing Students And Intrinsic Spirituality, Christine Anderson Madsen
Master's Projects
This paper describes some theoretical perspectives of spirituality, the concepts of spiritual care and spiritual needs, and barriers to providing spiritual care as described in the literature. The two most frequently described barriers are lack of comfort with the topic and lack of education. Because there is so little written about the discussion of spirituality in schools of nursing, a descriptive study using nursing students on the central coast of California was conducted. The Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale (SIBS) was used to measure intrinsic spirituality. This study looked for relationships between the scores on this scale, and the students' …

Occupational Therapists' Interests And Attitudes Toward Animal Assisted Therapy As A Treatment Modality, Lori Susan Buckley
Occupational Therapists' Interests And Attitudes Toward Animal Assisted Therapy As A Treatment Modality, Lori Susan Buckley
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One hundred seventy-nine occupational therapists (OTs) responded to a survey regarding their interests and attitudes toward animal assisted therapy as a treatment modality. It was found that most of the practitioners would be interested in learning more about animal assisted therapy and most felt it is a valid treatment modality to be used by occupational therapists. Furthermore, the most common answer to the question "why would you not be interested in participating in an AAT program," was "I feel I don't know enough about it". It was also found that therapists' most commonly selected patient goals for AAT were in …

Parasites And Parisitic Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Rebecca A. Cole, Milton Friend
Other Publications in Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease
Parasitism is an intimate relationship between two different species in which one (parasite) uses the other (host) as its environment from which it derives nourishment. Parasites are a highly diverse group of organisms that have evolved different strategies for infecting their hosts. Some, such as lice and ticks, are found on the external parts of the body (ectoparasites), but most are found internally (endoparasites). Some are microscopic, such as the blood protozoans that cause avian malaria; however, many are macroscopic. Life cycles differ greatly between major types of parasites and are generally classified as direct or indirect (Table 1). Direct …

Miscellaneous Diseases (Field Manual Of Wildlife Diseases), Milton Friend, Nancy J. Thomas
Other Publications in Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease
The fact that “Nature is far from benign” is clearly evident from the preceding chapters of this Manual. The diseases and other conditions described are the proverbial “tip of the iceberg” relative to the number of specific causes of ill health and death for free-ranging wild birds, but the wild bird health problems described account for most major wild bird disease conditions seen within the United States. However, the full toll from disease involves many other causes of illness and death that individually may cause substantial die-offs. Two examples of these other causes of die-offs are the deaths of Canada …

Electronic Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between African Self-Consciousness and attitudes toward interpersonal relationships among African American college students ending classes at a predominantly white university, Northwestern State University, and at a predominantly black university, Southern University. The ASC scale was used to assess the Black personality construct of African self-consciousness. The BHR survey was used to assess the subjects' perceptions concerning heterosexual relationships. The findings support the hypothesis that ASC is directly related to whether the individual possesses Afrocentric or Eurocentric beliefs and attitudes. A direct relationship was found between the environment and attitudes of …

Stress Experienced By Respite Care Workers And Family Caregivers When Caring For Alzheimer's Patients, Monica D. Minewiser
Theses & Dissertations
Changing demographics and cost containment in health care in caring for the Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patient has given birth to a growing need for respite care workers. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the stress level of a respite care worker who works with an AD patient in a noninstitutionalized setting on a daily basis will be significantly less than that of a family caregiver when caring for an AD patient. The Revised Memory and Behavior Problem Checklist (RMBPC) was the instrument used to measure stress. This is a questionnaire consisting of 24 questions and allows 5 …

A radiation hybrid (RH)-derived physical map of 25 markers on the feline X chromosome (including 19 Type I coding loci and 6 Type II microsatellite markers) was compared to homologous marker order on the human and mouse X chromosome maps. Complete conservation of synteny and marker order was observed between feline and human X chromosomes, whereas the same markers identified a minimum of seven rearranged syntenic segments between mouse and cat/human X chromosome marker order. Within the blocks, the feline, human, and mouse marker order was strongly conserved. Similarly, Y chromosome locus order was remarkably conserved between cat and human …

The Reliability Of Ice-Water Test In Detecting Detrusor Reflex In Patients With Chronic Spinal Cord Lesions, Ya-Wei Cheng, Yu-Gin Na, Tyng-Guey Wang, Yen-Ho Wang, Jin-Shin Lai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
This study attempts to define the reliability of ice-water test (IWT) in detecting the detrusor reflex in patients with chronic spinal cord lesion (SCL) and further explore its clinical application. 220 patients with SCL over a period of four years were included in this study. 105 of the patients were rated as the acute group with the injury less than six months. 115 patients with lesions over six months were grouped as the chronic one. All the patients underwent gas cystometrogram (CMG) and IWT within 48 hours. CMG revealed the presence of detrusor reflex. Comparing the results of CMG and …

Evaluation Of The Interface Pressure Of Conventionally Used Cushions By Sci Patient At The Ischial Tuberosites, Yiu-Chung Lau, Chau-Peng Leong, Hsueh-Wen Chang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Spinal cord injury (SCI) patients confined to a wheelchair for long periods are prone to pressure sores occurring at ischial tuberosity. This study used Expert-Seat pressure evaluation pad to record the pressure of the ischial tuberosities. Twenty-nine spinal cord injury subjects and twenty normal subjects participated in this study. The pressure distributed over ischial tuberosities during sitting was measured five times, including one measured without cushion. Four wheelchair cushions with different types of materials were evaluated in two population groups: spinal cord injured and normal control. The subjects sat on various types of wheelchair seats: (1) gel cushion: skil care …

Recurrence Of Transverse Myelitis After Long Term Neurological Recovery Associated With Antiphospholipid Antibodies In A Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus : A Casereport, Yen-Ho Wang, Woei Tsay, Guang-Dar Yin, Kou-Mou Huang, Tien-Shang Huang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A 44-year-old female Taiwanese developed T5 transverse myelitis (TM) in 1984, eight years before the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She responded very well to prednisolone and azathioprine administration and had complete neurological recovery. In August 1997, a relapse of TM at vicinal level, T6, occurred. Magnetic resonance image of the spinal cord revealed long segment involvement from T4 to T8. High titer of antiphospholipid antibodies and various serological markers of lupus activity were found to correlate with this relapse of TM. She responded very well to methylprednisolone pulse therapy with nearly complete neurological recovery. Follow-up examination of magnetic …

Cerebral Infarction Due To Traumatic Internal Carotid Artery Dissection : A Casereport And Review Of The Literature, Shwu-Fen Sun, Sau-Chin Mei, Chien-Wei Hsu, Kuo-Hua Hung, Ping-Hong Lai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Traumatic carotid artery dissection is often not recognized at the time of admission, possibly leading to cerebral infarction. This article reports on a 77-year-old man suffering from headache and neck pain after a traffic accident. Although the initial head computed tomography ( CT ) scan revealed no intracranial lesion, progressive left limbs weakness, slurred speech and blurred vision of his right eye developed on the next day after the accident. The color-coded duplex ultrasonography showed an intima flap and a false lumen in his right proximal internal carotid artery ( ICA ), which was compatible with dissection of the vessel. …
Using Professionally Trained Actors In Social Work Role-Play Simulations, Helen E. Petracchi
Using Professionally Trained Actors In Social Work Role-Play Simulations, Helen E. Petracchi
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The literature available to social work educators contains limited discussion of the use of role play simulation in the classroom. This paper presents the experiences of first-year MSW students in a foundation generalist practice class who were evaluated using role play for their final examination. In a unique arrangement, clients in these simulations were role-played by firstyear acting students from the university's theater arts department. The reaction of the social work students to role play with professionally trained actors is described and discussed from voluntarily submitted descriptions of the experience.

The Latency-Related Gene Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Inhibits Programmed Cell Death, Janice Ciacci-Zanella, Melissa Stone, Gail A. Henderson, Clinton J. Jones
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Although viral gene expression occurs in the peripheral nervous system during acute infection, bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) gene expression is extinguished, many neurons survive, and latency ensues. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, which is alternatively spliced in trigeminal ganglia during acute infection (L. Devireddy and C. Jones, J. Virol. 72:7294–7301, 1998). A subset of neurons express a protein encoded by the LR gene and the LR protein (LRP) is associated with cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (Cdk2)/cyclin complexes during productive infection (Y. Jiang, A. Hossain, M. T. Winkler, T. Holt, A. Doster, and C. …
