Ventricular Remodeling Following Infant-Pediatric Cardiac Transplantation. Does Age At Transplantation Or Size Disparity Matter?, Girish S. Shirali, F Lombano, W L. Beeson, D A. Dyar, N F. Mulla, A Khan, J K. Johnston, R E. Chinnock, S R. Gundry, A J. Razzouk

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Early left ventricular (LV) remodeling following pediatric cardiac transplantation has not been described. To identify patterns and determinants of change in left ventricular mass and volume posttransplant, we studied 125 consecutive children who underwent cardiac transplantation between January 1, 1989 and July 31, 1993. Two-dimensional imaging-directed M-mode echocardiograms were studied weekly until 26 weeks post-transplant. LV mass and volume (indexed to BSA1.5) were measured. LV mass index increased until 3 weeks post-transplant, and then decreased. The mean decrement in LV mass index after 8 weeks post-transplant (relative to baseline) was significantly larger in patients with donor-recipient weight ratio > 1.5 compared …

One-Trial Context Fear Conditioning As A Function Of The Interstimulus Interval, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres Dec 1995

One-Trial Context Fear Conditioning As A Function Of The Interstimulus Interval, Rick A. Bevins, John J. B. Ayres

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In two experiments, we examined the effects of a wide range of interstimulus intervals (2.5, 15, 45, 120, 135, and 405 sec) on one-trial context fear conditioning with rats. Here, the interstimulus interval (ISI) denotes the time between placement in a conditioning chamber and the onset of a single footshock. On the conditioning day, we observed that the rats’ behavior at the time of shock onset varied systematically across ISI values. On the subsequent test day, we used context-evoked freezing as a measure of context conditioning and found the well-known inverted U-shaped ISI function. We also found that conditioned freezing …

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

2,4-disulfonyl α-phenyl-tert-butyl nitrone and its pharmaceutically acceptable salts are disclosed. These materials are useful as pharmaceutical agents for oral or parenteral, e.g. intravenous administration to patients suffering from acute central nervous system oxidation as occurs in a stroke or from gradual central nervous system oxidation which can exhibit itself as progressive central nervous system function loss. The materials are also used to ameliorate the side effects of oxidative-damage causing antineoplastic disease treatments.

The Impact Of Humor On Energy, Tension, Task Choices, And Attributions: Exploring Hypotheses From Toughness Theory, Richard A. Dienstbier Dec 1995

The Impact Of Humor On Energy, Tension, Task Choices, And Attributions: Exploring Hypotheses From Toughness Theory, Richard A. Dienstbier

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Hypotheses derived from toughness theory suggest that nonaggressive humor should lead to increased feelings of energy without influencing tension, to preferences for studying materials that require more effort and energy, and to ratings of mundane laboratory activities as more challenging but not more threatening. Eighty-one college-age men and women were randomly assigned to watch a 12-minute video of Bill Cosby's humor or to watch a nonhumorous control video that analyzed the Cosby comedy routine. The humor condition resulted in significant increases in feelings of energy but not in feelings of tension. The other hypotheses were also confirmed except that performance …

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd Dec 1995

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, which are active during ischemia in preventing ATP depletion of the cells which predisposes them to subsequent injury during reperfusion, and which are active during reperfusion as oxygen radical scavengers, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for systemic or local administration, especially to the CNS, spinal column and eyes. Based on animal studies, the dosage for treating damage due to stroke is in the range of 10 to 300 mg/kg. Similar dosages are useful in treating damage resulting from free radical generation during inflammation, either as a product …

The Effectiveness Of A Preoperative Patient Education Handbook In Decreasing Anxiety Of Veterans Undergoing Elective Surgery, Garletta White Steen Dec 1995

The Effectiveness Of A Preoperative Patient Education Handbook In Decreasing Anxiety Of Veterans Undergoing Elective Surgery, Garletta White Steen

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this experimental, pretest/posttest study was to examine the effectiveness of a preoperative patient education handbook developed by postanesthesia care unit (PACU) nurses in decreasing state anxiety of veterans undergoing minor elective surgery. State anxiety was measured by the State Anxiety Scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, developed by Spielberger, Gorsuch, Luschene, Vagg, and Jacobs (1983). The population for the study was composed of veterans undergoing elective surgery in a hospital which is part of the South Texas Veterans Healthcare System. The sample consisted of 38 patients admitted to the hospital for a variety of minor elective surgeries. …

Expression And Characterization Of Two Alternatively Spliced Isoforms Of Rat Type I Receptor For Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate, Doris Da May Lin Dec 1995

Expression And Characterization Of Two Alternatively Spliced Isoforms Of Rat Type I Receptor For Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate, Doris Da May Lin

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The transmembrane receptor for IP3 is a tetrameric calcium channel located in the endoplasmic reticulum. In many cell types the receptor mediates such complex signals as calcium waves and oscillations. There are multiple receptor isoforms, derived by alternative splicing as well as different genes. The functional significance of these many receptor isoforms has not been determined. To this end, I have generated cell lines that express homotetrameric receptors.Stable lines of the human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells were established by transfection with cDNAs encoding for two splice variants of the rat type I receptor. The two variants differ in the presence …

The Spleen Focus-Forming Virus Envelope Glycoprotein, Gp55, And The Block In The Erythropoietin-Induced Differentiation Of Friend Murine Erythroleukemia Cells, Thomas Samuel Lin Dec 1995

The Spleen Focus-Forming Virus Envelope Glycoprotein, Gp55, And The Block In The Erythropoietin-Induced Differentiation Of Friend Murine Erythroleukemia Cells, Thomas Samuel Lin

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Unlike normal committed erythroid progenitor cells, which require erythropoietin (EPO) for both proliferation and terminal differentiation, Friend murine erythroleukemia (MEL) cells are EPO-independent and do not differentiate in response to the cytokine. Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) induces differentiation and restores responsiveness to EPO. DMSO-treated Friend cells responded to EPO with both increased proliferation and further hemoglobin synthesis. The effects of DMSO upon the expression of EPO receptor (EPOR) mRNA and cell surface receptor were examined. Clone DMSO/R1, an MEL subline resistant to the differentiation-inducing and EPO-sensitizing effects of DMSO, expressed a higher level of EPOR mRNA than parental Friend cells, and DMSO …

Optimal Survey Design For Community Intervention Evaluations: Cohort Or Cross-Sectional?, Paula Diehr Dec 1995

Optimal Survey Design For Community Intervention Evaluations: Cohort Or Cross-Sectional?, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Community intervention evaluations that measure changes over time may conduct repeated cross-sectional surveys, follow a cohort of residents over time, or (often) use both designs. Each survey design has implications for precision and cost. To explore these issues, we assume that two waves of surveys are conducted, and that the goal is to estimate change in behavior for people who reside in the community at both times. Cohort designs are shown to provide more accurate estimates (in the sense of lower mean squared error) than cross-sectional estimates if (1) there is strong correlation over time in an individual's behavior at …

Invasion Of Caco-2 Cells By Salmonella Typhimurium (Copenhagen) Isolates From Healthy And Sick Chickens, Theodore J. Kottom, Lisa K. Nolan, John Brown Dec 1995

Invasion Of Caco-2 Cells By Salmonella Typhimurium (Copenhagen) Isolates From Healthy And Sick Chickens, Theodore J. Kottom, Lisa K. Nolan, John Brown

Lisa K. Nolan

In a previous study, Salmonella isolates of sick birds were distinguished from those of apparently healthy birds by their high degree of invasion of tissue culture cells. In this study, a single pair of Salmonella isolates was examined to determine the source of this observed difference in invasion. When isolates were allowed to invade Caco-2 cells for 8 hours, the isolate from the sick bird (S) appeared to invade in greater numbers than did the isolate from the healthy bird (H). However, when invasion was distinguished from intracellular growth/survival, it was found that H invaded in greater numbers than S, …

Influence Of Chondroitinase On Indirect Hemagglutination Titers And Phagocytosis Of Pasteurella Multocida Serogroups A, D And F, Richard B. Rimler, Karen B. Register, Tibor Magyar, Mark R. Ackermann Dec 1995

Influence Of Chondroitinase On Indirect Hemagglutination Titers And Phagocytosis Of Pasteurella Multocida Serogroups A, D And F, Richard B. Rimler, Karen B. Register, Tibor Magyar, Mark R. Ackermann

Mark R. Ackermann

Capsules of Pasteurella multocida serogroups A, D and F contain mucopolysaccharides which block antigenic determinants and prevent phagocytosis. In this study, capsules of serogroup A, D and F strains of P. multocida were depolymerized by enzyme treatment. Capsule depolymerization of serogroup D and F strains with chondroitinase increased indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test titers and enhanced phagocytosis by swine neutrophils. Capsule depolymerization of serogroup A strains with hyaluronidase increased IHA titers, but depolymerization with chondroitinase did not. When serogroup A strains were treated with a combination of chondroitinase and hyaluronidase, IHA test titers were lower than titers of the same strains …

Ovum Pick Up In Thai Native Calf(Ovum Pick Up ในลูกโคพื้นเมืองไทย), Chainarong Lohachit, Mongkol Techakumphu, Wichai Tantasuparak, Kaywalee Chatdarong, Siriwat Suadsong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The oocyte collection by using Real time B-mode scanning ultrasound (Ovum Pick Up) was performed in four Thai native calves aged 5-6 mts, weight 100 kg. All calves had an ear norgotromet progestagen implant for 7 days before ovarian stimulation. The calves were stimulated by follicle stimulting hormone (FSH) at dose of 120 mg, IM twice a day (am/pm) for 3 days as follow: 30/30, 20/20, 10/10 mg. The oocytes were collected 24 hrs. after the last injection of FSH. Every calf had a repeat stimulation every two weeks for one to five times. The average oocytes per collection was …

Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis: An Unusual Complication Of Bronchial Asthma, S F. Hussain, J A. Khan, M A. Khan

Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care

Asthma is a common medical problem in Pakistan. Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis (ABPA), an immune mediated disease, is an unusual complication of bronchial asthma which can result in bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, respiratory failure and death. Early diagnosis is important so that with proper therapy permanent lung damage can be prevented. First described in 19521 , ABPA was thought to be a rare disorder, but with increased awareness amongst the physicians and better diagnostic techniques, äases are being recognized more frequently. The clinical features of ABPA (cough, fever, hemoptysis and lung infiltrates) are usually mistaken for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). We present three …

Gas1-Induced Growth Suppression Requires A Transactivation-Independent P53 Function., Giannino Del Sal, Elisabetta M. Ruaro, Rene Utrera, Charles N. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

In normal cells, induction of quiescence is accompanied by the increased expression of growth arrest-specific genes (gas). One of them, gas1, is regulated at the transcriptional level and codes for a membrane-associated protein (Gas1) which is down regulated during the G0-to-S phase transition in serum-stimulated cells. Gas1 is not expressed in growing or transformed cells, and when overexpressed in normal fibroblasts, it blocks the G0-to-S phase transition. Moreover, Gas1 blocks cell proliferation in several transformed cells with the exception of simian virus 40- or adenovirus-transformed cell lines. In this paper, we demonstrate that overexpression of Gas1 blocks cell proliferation in …
