An Evidence-Based Approach To Determine The Feasibility And Sustainability Of A Support Group For Vulnerable Populations With Diabetes In A Free Health Clinic, Shawn Hillman

Doctoral Dissertations

Purpose: People living with diabetes require the appropriate resources, education, and support to avoid long-term complications. Vulnerable people with diabetes are often lacking these vital components, resulting in higher rates of complications, and decreased quality of life. A support group for diabetes in a free health clinic is an effective venue to provide these resources. This project determined the feasibility and factors leading to the potential for sustainability of a diabetes support group for a vulnerable population in West Michigan by implementing a pilot support group. Food Policy: Urban Farming As A Supplemental Food Source, Bessie Didomenica Jan 2015

Food Policy: Urban Farming As A Supplemental Food Source, Bessie Didomenica

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The distance between farms and cities and the limited access that some residents have to fresh foods can be detrimental to a city's capacity to feed people over time. This study addressed the under-studied topic of urban farming as a secondary food source, specifically by exploring the opportunities and limitations of urban farming in a large Northeastern city. Brundtland's food policy was the pivotal theory supporting food production to end global starvation, and was the link between environmental conservation and human survival. The research question for this study examined the potential food policy opportunities and limitations that assist urban farms …

The Effects Of Sustainability As A Positive Attribute On Equine Therapy Design: An Interdisciplinary Study, Andria Sinclair

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Interdisciplinary studies have brought benefits to introducing new solutions to the traditional environment and traditional therapies. Sustainability in relation to design has been suggested in 2006, by the Center for Building Performance and Diagnostic (CBPD) at Carnegie Mellon University to incorporate daylight, solar, heat and ventilation of the natural environment combined with the innovations of current technologies (Whitmore, 2011). This paper will look at how sustainability plays a key role of benefits including those that are health associated with equine therapy design and its relationship to the patient, or end user. There is a need to assist them in developing strategies for improving and sustaining their functionality. The purpose of this study was to improve understanding of the elements of coalition success and sustainability that are vital to health-related community-based participatory research.

Methods: Although the literature describes coalition functions for effecting sustainable programs and policies, most research reports …
