Exercise To Improve Cancer-Related Fatigue, Jennifer Watson Dec 2020

Exercise To Improve Cancer-Related Fatigue, Jennifer Watson

MSN Capstone Projects

For the average patient, medical professionals typically recommend exercise to enhance the health of their patients in multiple ways. Oncology patients, however, often have different issues that the treating physicians are more concerned about, so physical activity gets placed on the back burner. The need for exercise in oncology patients is certainly a decision that should be part of an individualized treatment plan, but it is reasonable to believe that most of these patients will benefit from participating in an exercise program. With the high demanding need to decrease chemotherapy side effects and improve lives of those undergoing it, this …

Oncology Nurse Compassion Fatigue Benchmark Project, Jessica R. Hayward Nov 2020

Oncology Nurse Compassion Fatigue Benchmark Project, Jessica R. Hayward

MSN Capstone Projects

Oncology nurses provide care to patients during some of the toughest times in their lives. This care places nurses at risk of developing compassion fatigue which can have negative long-term health impacts. There is currently no formal compassion fatigue education offered to oncology nurses. This lack of training leaves nurses vulnerable to the impacts of unmanaged stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. This benchmark project was completed to bring awareness to the need for a mindfulness-based compassion fatigue course. This course will provide oncology nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage these difficult emotions.

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Background We aimed to assess the impact of genomic human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-I/II homozygosity on the survival benefit of patients with unresectable locally advanced, metastatic non-small lung cancer treated by single-agent programmed cell death protein-1/programmed death ligand 1 (PD1/PDL1) inhibitors.

Methods We collected blood from 170 patients with advanced lung cancer treated with immunotherapy at two major oncology centers in Western Australia. Genomic DNA was extracted from white blood cells and used for HLA-I/II high-resolution typing. HLA-I/II homozygosity was tested for association with survival outcomes. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression models were constructed to determine whether HLA homozygosity was an …

We have created the immunodeficient SRG rat, a Sprague-Dawley Rag2/Il2rg double knockout that lacks mature B cells, T cells, and circulating NK cells. This model has been tested and validated for use in oncology (SRG OncoRat®). The SRG rat demonstrates efficient tumor take rates and growth kinetics with different human cancer cell lines and PDXs. Although multiple immunodeficient rodent strains are available, some important human cancer cell lines exhibit poor tumor growth and high variability in those models. The VCaP prostate cancer model is one such cell line that engrafts unreliably and grows irregularly in …

Determining The Effectiveness Of System-Based Solutions To Improve Fragmented Care For Oncology Patients Living In Rural And Remote Regions: An Integrative Review, Andrea Nicole Fulmer Oct 2020

Determining The Effectiveness Of System-Based Solutions To Improve Fragmented Care For Oncology Patients Living In Rural And Remote Regions: An Integrative Review, Andrea Nicole Fulmer

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this integrative review is to review, critique, and synthesize the current literature to determine the state of the science related to the established systems approach for improving healthcare management and care coordination of the oncology patient population in rural and remote regions. The oncology patient population with co-existing chronic disease living in rural and remote regions experience fragmented health care. New cancer diagnoses take precedence over other existing comorbidities and require focused and specialized care for lengthy periods of time. Research is significantly limited for the current state of science for the identified patient population living in …

The Effectiveness Of Patient Education Utilizing The Teach-Back Method To Improve Patient Satisfaction, Gladys Cajucom Apuli Jul 2020

The Effectiveness Of Patient Education Utilizing The Teach-Back Method To Improve Patient Satisfaction, Gladys Cajucom Apuli

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this Evidence-Based Project is to determine the effectiveness of using “teach-back” method in giving education to patients receiving chemotherapy and how this method can increase patient satisfaction with understanding of medication action and side effects. Teach-back method is a way of checking patient’s understanding by asking them to state in their own words the information about their health. It is a way to confirm that the explanations given by their provider is understood. Teach-back method can improve patient’s understanding and adherence, decrease call backs and cancelled appointments. This project was developed to improve the organization’s patient satisfaction …

Sensors And Wearables In Oncology: A Study Of The Barriers And Facilitators To Adoption, Sam Hanna May 2020

Sensors And Wearables In Oncology: A Study Of The Barriers And Facilitators To Adoption, Sam Hanna

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Innovation, although a subject of considerable debate (e.g., Baregheh et al., 2009; Christensen, 1997), can be defined as the introduction and dissemination of a new or a different idea into use or practice that drives impact (Solis and Sinfield, 2014). Many studies and editorials have highlighted the complexity of the United States health system and detailed the slow speed by which innovative ideas materialize into impactful innovations (Continuing America’s leadership (2017); England & Stewart (2007); Kannampallil, Schauer, Cohen & Patel (2011)). While there are many advances in sensor and wearable technologies in this instance, the adoption rate by oncologists has …

Early Initiation Of Palliative Care, Ann R. Phillips Apr 2020

Early Initiation Of Palliative Care, Ann R. Phillips

MSN Capstone Projects

The overall aim of this project, based upon the best available evidence, clinical experience of oncology nurses, and patient preferences for information about palliative care, is to propose the creation and initiation of a protocol which empowers oncology/palliative care nurses to be able to initiate early discussions about palliative care for patients with advanced stage cancer (III-IV) diagnoses.

By having frank conversations surrounding palliative care early on in the treatment process, patients are better able to make informed decisions about treatment, depending on the trajectory their disease takes. Such conversations provide patients with a clearer picture of what is likely …

Potential Use Of Biotherapeutic Bacteria To Target Colorectal Cancer-Associated Taxa, Gareth Lawrence, Maire Begley, Paul D. Cotter, Caitríona M. Guinane Jan 2020

Potential Use Of Biotherapeutic Bacteria To Target Colorectal Cancer-Associated Taxa, Gareth Lawrence, Maire Begley, Paul D. Cotter, Caitríona M. Guinane

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

The role of the gut microbiome in human health and disease is the focus of much attention. It has been widely agreed upon that our gut bacteria play a role in host immunity, nutrient absorption, digestion, metabolism, and other key drivers of health. Furthermore, certain microbial signatures and specific taxa have also been associated with the development of diseases, such as obesity; inflammatory bowel disease; and, indeed, colorectal cancer (CRC), which is the focus of this review. By extension, such taxa represent potential therapeutic targets. In particular, the emerging human pathogen Fusobacterium nucleatum represents an important agent in CRC development …

Objective: This study aimed to discern preferences for receiving somatic molecular profiling (MP) results in cancer patients who have given consent to undergo testing.

Methods: We conducted a mixed‐methods study to explore patients’ views on which MP results they would like to receive and why. Advanced cancer patients (n=1299) completed questionnaires after giving consent to participate in a parent genomics study and undergoing MP. A subset of patients (n=20) participated in qualitative interviews.

Results: Almost all (96%) participants were interested in receiving results which would direct cancer treatment (i.e. were actionable). A smaller majority wanted to access results which were …

Stopping Targeted Therapy For Complete Responders In Advanced Braf Mutant Melanoma, Lydia Warburton, Tarek M. Meniawy, Leslie Calapre, Michelle Pereira, Ashleigh Mcevoy, Mel Ziman, Elin Gray, Michael Millward

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

BRAF inhibitors revolutionised the management of melanoma patients and although resistance occurs, there is a subgroup of patients who maintain durable disease control. For those cases with durable complete response (CR) it is not clear whether it is safe to cease therapy. Here we identified 13 patients treated with BRAF +/− MEK inhibitors, who cease therapy after prolonged CR (median = 34 months, range 20–74). Recurrence was observed in 3/13 (23%) patients. In the remaining 10 patients with sustained CR off therapy, the median follow up after discontinuation was 19 months (range 8–36). We retrospectively measured ctDNA levels using droplet …
