Systematic Review Of Metabolic Syndrome Biomarkers: A Panel For Early Detection, Management, And Risk Stratification In The West Virginian Population, Krithika Srikanthan, Andrew Feyh, Haresh Visweshwar, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Komal Sodhi Aug 2018

Systematic Review Of Metabolic Syndrome Biomarkers: A Panel For Early Detection, Management, And Risk Stratification In The West Virginian Population, Krithika Srikanthan, Andrew Feyh, Haresh Visweshwar, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Komal Sodhi

Joseph I Shapiro MD

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome represents a cluster of related metabolic abnormalities, including central obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance, with central obesity and insulin resistance in particular recognized as causative factors. These metabolic derangements present significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is commonly recognized as the primary clinical outcome, although other outcomes are possible. Metabolic syndrome is a progressive condition that encompasses a wide array of disorders with specific metabolic abnormalities presenting at different times. These abnormalities can be detected and monitored via serum biomarkers. This review will compile a list of promising biomarkers that are associated with metabolic …

The 340b Program: Benefits And Limitations, Craig Kimble Pharmd, Mba, Ms, Bcacp, Alberto Coustasse Dr.Ph. Md, Mba, Mph

Craig Kimble, PharmD, MBA, MS, BCACP

This in progress study reviews challenges and successes associated with implementing a 340B program at Marshall Health and Cabell Huntington Hospital (CHH) in Huntington, West Virginia. CHH qualified as a participant in the 340B program because it has met qualification as a disproportionate share hospital (DSH). The site has also been able to open two outpatient pharmacies to serve the targeted patient population. The pharmacies have also been able to use savings from the program to embed clinical pharmacists into the physician care areas to provide medication therapy management services including discharge counselling, disease state management services, patient financial assistance …

Introduction:

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the most significant public health problems currently facing the U.S., Especially in West Virginia. If it is undetected and left untreated, the likelihood of sustaining a treatment response decreases. While early identification has been identified as a critical focus in trying to obtain better health outcomes, new drug treatments appear promising, although somewhat expensive. West Virginia, a predominantly rural state, is beginning to face a mounting financial crisis due to HCV.

Purpose of the Study:

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of early identification and treatment for patients …

Baylisascaris Procyonis Exposure Case Study, Andrea M. Lauffer M.D., Patricia Lutz M.D., Susan L. Flesher M.D.

Susan L Flesher, MD

We report a case of exposure to raccoon feces found to be contaminated with baylisascaris procyonis. The exposure was recognized early enough by the family to allow prophylaxis with albendazole. Because of the potential fatal or neurologically catastrophic effects of this disease immediate treatment is indicated. This is started in advance of environmental studies that are done to determine if the feces is indeed contaminated.

Charles A. Hoffman, M.D.: Physician, Leader, Humanist, Lawrence M. Wyner M.D.

Lawrence M. Wyner, MD

Physician role models are as important for the seasoned practitioner as they are for the recent medical school graduate. To this end, the life and career of Charles "Carl" A. Hoffman, M.D. (Fig. 1), American Urological Association (AUA) President 1967-1968, are legion. Dr. Hoffman had humble origins in the southern Ohio industrial town of Ironton. Born in 1904, he lost both parents before the age of 10 years, and was taken in by relatives. To help support his extended family, he got an after-school job at a local pharmacy (Fig. 2a), running errands and delivering prescriptions. The sight of people …
