Interstitial Cystitis, Edward O. Janosko Ii Mar 1974

Interstitial Cystitis, Edward O. Janosko Ii

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Introduction] There is only one report of an attempt to induce interstitial cystitis in animals by immunologic methods. Silk in 1970 was unable to produce any lesions in rats or rabbits following a single intramuscular injection of homologous bladder antigen (5 mgm) in complete Freund's adjuvant. This amount of crude antigen is small compared to doses of 200-400 mg which have been successfully used to produce lesions in other organs. Multiple injections of antigen will sometimes produce a lesion when single injections of antigen are unsuccessful. Heterologous antigens, moreover, are occasionally more effective than homologous antigen in producing …

The Effect Of Salicylate And Chloroquine On Prostaglandin-Induced Articular Damage In The Rabbit Knee, Carol Teitz Mar 1974

The Effect Of Salicylate And Chloroquine On Prostaglandin-Induced Articular Damage In The Rabbit Knee, Carol Teitz

[From the Discussion] In summary, we have shown that prostaglandin E1, when injected in the rabbit knee produces synovitis and cartilage matrix degradation. The finding that salicylate cannot prevent this degeneration whereas chloroquine can., is most likely due to their different mechanisms of action in this system. Whereas chloroquine's ability to stabilize membranes is protective int his experiment, salicylate's ability to prevent the biosynthesis of prostaglandins is by passed and therefore is not.

Influence Of Ethanol On Glucose Tolerance, Insulin Secretion And Glucagon Secretion In Man, James Mcmonagle Jan 1974

Influence Of Ethanol On Glucose Tolerance, Insulin Secretion And Glucagon Secretion In Man, James Mcmonagle

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Introduction] In response to the widespread consumption of ethanol and the medical problems related to its abuse, the world literature on ethanol metabolism has become voluminous. The interaction between the metabolism of ethanol and intermediary metabolism of carbohydrates has been amply elucidated. One particular very important aspect of this ethanol-carbohydrate interaction which has only recently begun to be investigated is the effect of ethanol on glucose tolerance. The preliminary studies concerning the effects of ethanol on glucose tolerance have provided both exciting findings and unanswered questions. This dissertation, examining the effects of ethanol on glucose tolerance and insulin …
