Phenotypic evaluation and the culling of candidate animals for traits by applying traditional animal breeding are usually costly tasks, which need to be carried out over a considerable span of time. The use of molecular genetics as an alternative method enables animal breeders to select eligible animals for the desirable trait, or traits, at earlier ages. Selection based upon markers could result in increased accuracy as well as a better selection response of animals. The Booroola gene has long been recognized as a candidate gene responsible for a higher rate of ewe ovulation, which results in increased litter size. In …

Endometritis In Simmental Cows: Incidence, Causes, And Therapy Options, Robert Zobel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objectives of this study were to evaluate endometritis incidence and possible causes, and to assess the different therapy options. From a total of 1300 cows, endometritis was diagnosed in 23.07%, with clinical endometritis in 15.31% and subclinical endometritis in 7.77%. Previous dystocia resulted in 40.59% of the clinical endometritis and 47.52% of the subclinical endometritis (P < 0.05). Placental retention caused clinical and subclinical endometritis in 43.18% and 37.50% of the cows, respectively (P < 0.05). Body condition score 2 resulted in the highest endometritis rate and body condition score 3-4 resulted in the lowest endometritis rate (P < 0.05). Corpus luteum was found in 9.67% of the cows suffering from endometritis, while the rest developed various types of subfertility (P < 0.05). Three groups of cows (A, B, and C) with an almost equal number of clinical and subclinical endometritis diagnoses were formed. All of the groups received prostaglandin analogues (PGF Veyx Forte®, Veyx Pharma) intramuscularly 3 times at 11 day intervals. In group A, only prostaglandins were used; in group B, cephapirin (Metricure®, Intervet Schering-Plough) was administered into the corpus uteri simultaneously with the first 2 doses of prostaglandins; and in group C, the first 2 doses of prostaglandins were followed by the ozone product Riger Spray (Novagen, Italy) applied into the uterus. The criteria applied for the therapy success were the number of cows conceived after the first artificial insemination and the number of days open. The best therapy results were achieved in groups C and B (P < 0.05), with the advantage of no milk and meat withdrawing period in the animals of group C.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of some essential oil compounds for the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in çiğ köfte. In experiment 1, a çiğ köfte batch was inoculated with high levels of E. coli O157:H7 or L. monocytogenes (7.00 log_{10} cfu/g) and the batches were divided into 6 groups. Each group was treated with 18 mL/kg of normal saline, cineole, limonene, carvone, linalool, or eugenol. Treatment with carvone, linalool, and eugenol resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the numbers of both pathogens. In experiment 2, the çiğ köfte was inoculated with the same pathogens and each group was treated with 0 (control), 20, 22.5, and 25 mL/kg of eugenol. Increases in concentration did not cause a difference in pathogen reduction. The results showed that eugenol, carvone, and linalool can be used for the inactivation of E. coli O157:H7 and L. monocytogenes in çiğ köfte or similar foods.

Factors Affecting Colostrum Quality Of Ewes And Immunostimulation, Özge Yilmaz, Güven Kaşikçi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Maternal antibodies play a major role in the development of the immune system of a young animal. Ideally, the transmission of maternal immunity to the foetus occurs in the uterus. However, in ruminants, as there is no maternal antibody transfer from the mother to her young by way of the uterus, the antibodies present in the colostrum are a vital necessity for newborn ruminants. After birth, an unhealthy neonatal period for the young animal and an unhealthy puerperal period for the mother can cause significant financial losses. In animal husbandry, due to the budget allocated for the treatment of diseases …
