Polymorphisms in the genes encoding cytochrome p450 (CYP) and thiopurine S-methyl transferase (TPMT) enzymes catalyze the metabolic reactions of several drugs. These polymorphisms might be responsible for adverse drug reactions. Turkish population data for these genes still needs to be elucidated. We aimed to detect the allele frequencies of thiopurine S-methyl transferase (TPMT), cytochrome p4503A4*1B (CYP3A4*1B) and cytochrome p4503A4*3 (CYP3A5*3) gene variants in the Turkish population. The aim of the present report was to evaluate the prevalent species of airborne fungi in the outdoor environment in the city of Trabzon, Turkey. The area is surrounded by high mountains running parallel to the Black Sea, and has a mostly rainy and temperate climate together with a most varied and widespread flora. Air samples were collected in four seasons by means of the gravitational settling method using petri dishes with SDA culture media. Those fungi colonies that formed after an incubation period of 7-10 days at 25 ºC were determined on the basis of micro and macromorphological features. …

The encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma constitutes the most common source of consultation material in thyroid pathology. We present our five consecutive cases to illustrate this issue. The diagnosis of the encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma is considerably controversial. These tumors are encapsulated neoplasms and have the nuclear features of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Although the criteria were described for the diagnosis, a considerable subjectivity is present among the pathologists. Therefore, the categories of "well differentiated carcinoma" and "well differentiated tumor of uncertain malignant potential" were included in the diagnostic spectrum of these neoplasms. Aim: The proposed graphemic area in the dominant hemisphere contains letter representations that are responsible for guiding the skilled movements required for writing and for recognition of the physical features of letters. Dysfunction in this system may cause apraxic agraphia. In this study, writing performance of a right-handed, left hemisphere damaged, 12-year old apraxic agraphic patient with a native language of shallow ortography is analysed. Methods: Writing performance was evaluated with several different word lists, each holding same amount of letters, novel words (non-word), words, functors, and high-imagery and low-imagery words. Aim: Owing to the widespread use of antibiotic drugs in both human and animals, we thought it would be important to determine the effect of these on lactoperoxidase (LPO; E.C. 1.11.1.7) activity during lactation. The in vitro effects of gentamicin sulfate and ampicillin sodium drugs on bovine LPO enzyme activity in breast-milk were investigated. Materials and Methods: LPO was purified with Amberlite CG 50 resin, CM Sephadex C-50 ion-exchange chromatography, and Sephadex G-100 gel filtration chromatography from skimmed bovine milk. A 48-year-old man with relapsing multiple myeloma (MM) presented with serum monoclonal protein (IgG l) of 5.93 g/dl. He was initially treated with four cycles of VAD (vincristine, adriamycin and dexamethasone) but due to deterioration of his renal functions with disease relapse, he was placed on hemodialysis. A combined treatment with thalidomide at a daily dose of 200 mg and 4-d cycles of dexamethasone was started for relapsing MM. Thalidomide dose was increased to 400 mg after two weeks. True aneurysms of the PFA are uncommon. Rupture risk in true PFA aneurysms are extremely high (42%). Therefore a rapid evaluation and treatment planning is essential. Ultrasonography and color Doppler ultrasonography have priority in diagnosis of these cases. Angiography, CT and CT angiography are performed in conjunction with ultrasonography for planning the procedure before surgical treatment and follow-up after treatment.

Students' views in relation to its relevance in medical education are necessary in order to justify its continuous inclusion in medical school curriculum. Overproduction of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species leads to oxidative stress and decreased total antioxidant capacity, which is responsible for high mortality from several diseases such as endotoxic shock. Nitric oxide (NO) produced by inducible NO synthase (iNOS) during endotoxemia is the major cause of vascular hyporeactivity, hypotension and multiple organ failure. We investigated whether NO-mediated oxidative stress in rat heart, aorta and mesenteric artery is involved in the attenuation of endotoxin-induced hypotension by inhibition of iNOS. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is an inflammatory condition of unknown etiology. The exact role of the leukocytes in the pathogenesis of RAS is not known. The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of the oxidative system in neutophils of RAS patients. The aim of this study is to compare two accepted techniques; intravenous (IV) remifentanil infusion versus its combination with paracervical block (PCB) in patients undergoing transvaginal ultrasound guided oocyte retrieval (TUGOR). One hundred unpremedicated patients were divided into two groups to receive either IV remifentanil (Group R) or IV remifentanil plus PCB (Group R+PCB). After monitoring cardiopulmonary parameters, remifentanil infusion of 0.25 µg kg^{-1} min-1 was started in both in groups. Aim: The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of pre-injury supplementation with vitamin E or selenium on antioxidant enzyme and malondialdehyde levels, as markers of lipid peroxidation, after thermal injury to rats. Materials and Methods: The animals were divided into 3 groups: Group 1 (n = 15): controls, no supplementation; Group 2 (n = 14): received vitamin E (100 mg/kg per day) for 10 days pre-burn; Group 3 (n = 14): received selenium (4 ppm in drinking water) for 10 days pre-burn. Background and Aim: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disease associated with mental retardation, speech and memory deficits, developmental/learning disabilities, and, frequently, also with neuropsychological findings. It is known that all these abnormal brain functions could be associated with morphological anomalies of various brain regions. We investigated possible brain volume variations in children with FXS who had significant neurobehavioral symptoms and cognitive deficits. Background: Although symptoms of infection caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) in healthy adults are generally mild, the virus is known to produce severe symptoms most often in immunocompromised patients. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of aerobic training on the relationship between the heart rate deflection point and anaerobic threshold (AT). Patients and Methods: Seventeen untrained, obese subjects (body mass index: 39.5 ± 1.2 kg/m^2) completed 2 incremental ramp exercise tests (15 W/min) up to the point of exhaustion using an electromagnetically-braked cycle ergometer; once at the onset and once at the end of a 4-week period. Background: An important aspect of the "description" of a variable is the shape of its distribution, which tells you the frequency of values from different ranges of the variable. Typically, as most of the statistical tests are based on the normality assumption, a researcher is interested in how well the distribution can be approximated by the normal distribution. Unless there are extreme violations of the normality assumptions, approved statistical tests usually provide accurate results.
