Recently, sport psychology has become a more popular resource for athletes and coaches when looking to increase performance. It is unknown how many Canadian universities utilize sport psychology services in their athletic programs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with coaches of Canadian university varsity teams to learn about their opinions on sport psychology and mental performance consultants (MPCs). The research was approached from a pragmatic perspective. Results showed that MPCs are important to enhance performance and provide mental health resources. The purpose of the present thesis was to develop and evaluate methods of assessing landing mechanics and investigate the effects of different rehabilitation strategies after ACL reconstruction. Three studies were conducted. The first study used a Delphi process to develop the content of a Clinician-Rated Drop Vertical Jump Scale to evaluate jump landing mechanics during rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. Emergency department (ED) visits for primary healthcare-treatable conditions are preventable and indicate barriers to primary healthcare. The goal of this thesis was to explore the prevalence and key correlates of preventable ED visits among adults in Canada. Our systematic review found that the prevalence of these visits ranged from 4.3% to 59.1% and were associated with younger age, low education, low income, rural residence, and worse self-rated health. The current gold standard surgical approach for Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is a medial parapatellar approach (MPA). We aimed to study a novel lateral subvastus lateralis approach (SLA) for TKA and compare patient outcomes and joint kinematics to the MPA.

Patients with neutral or varus alignment undergoing primary TKA were recruited to undergo the SLA. At one year postoperative, patient outcomes (WOMAC, SF-12, KSS) and joint kinematics (using radio stereometric analysis (RSA)) were analyzed. 7 LPA and 7 MPA patients were compared.

The humeral head osteotomy influences shoulder arthroplasty component height, version and neck shaft angle and therefore outcomes. The purpose of this study is to develop and utilize navigation to execute the osteotomy.

3D printed models were used to develop a navigation technique, and then to execute planned osteotomies. Free hand, fixed angle guide, patient specific guides, and real time navigation osteotomies were completed. The height, neck shaft angle and version were recorded. Radical prostatectomy (RP) is a common treatment for prostate cancer. We used RP whole-mount tissue samples from 68 patients stained with haematoxylin and eosin to create cancer maps using four pretrained networks: AlexNet, NASNet, VGG16 and Xception, to classify regions of interest (ROIs) as cancer or non-cancer. Models were trained on either raw images or as tissue component maps (TCMs) containing nuclei, lumina and stroma/other components generated from a trained U-Net.

This exploratory qualitative study identified spiritual and psychosocial palliative care needs in one rural Eastern Ontario town, referred to as the pseudonym “Duffy’s Hill.” Six qualitative interviews with health care providers gathered insights, ideas, and stories related to the provision of spiritual and psychosocial palliative care in Duffy’s Hill. Participant responses were analyzed for shared values, beliefs, ideas, practices, and norms in providing this care to determine if the distinct needs observed could be attributed to cultural particularities in Duffy’s Hill. Colonoscopy is a technically challenging procedure to learn. The colonoscope is prone to forming loops in the colon, which can lead patient discomfort and even perforation. We hypothesized that expert endoscopists use techniques to avoid loop formation, and identify and straighten loops earlier, and thus exert less force.

Using a physical colon simulator model, electromagnetic tracking markers were used to follow the motion of the colon as the scope was advanced. Attending physicians exerted significantly lower mean colonic displacement than trainees.

A pragmatic, 2x2 factorial, cluster-randomized controlled trial was designed to ascertain the effectiveness of two distinct formats of a PEM (insert and outsert) at improving adherence to guideline recommendations for the management of diabetes complications among Ontario family and general practitioners. Prior research suggests that people with psychotic disorders have an excess risk of individual chronic conditions, however less is known about their risk of co-occurring multiple chronic health conditions; that is, multimorbidity.
