Basic Needs Initiative at California State University, Monterey Bay is a department that provides students with food, housing, and wellness resources. Over half of the university's students experience food insecurity, and over 85% use non-academic resources to learn about nutrition. This project adds a dietary health section to the department’s website to increase students’ access to nutrition education. It addresses the micro-level agency problem that too few students eat a healthy, balanced diet. Catholic Charities - Diocese of Monterey has implemented Stress Management in the Kitchen though the Family Support Services department of the Seaside office. Stress Management in the Kitchen was implemented to address the knowledge gap between nutrition and healthy living.The purpose of the workshop series was to give clients a fun and digestible way to increase their knowledge on how their health and nutritional habits can or should be applied to how they deal with stress. In Monterey County, the rate of childhood obesity is too high among the Latino/Hispanic community. The Head Start program in Monterey County serves more than 1,245 children each year with the majority of them being Latino/Hispanic. The causes of childhood obesity are a lack of physical activities, cultural beliefs, and financial issues among families. It leads to serious health problems that impact children academically and psychologically.
