New Directions In Medical School Admissions, Stephen D. Neeleman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In 1910, American medicine underwent a thorough review of its practices, policies, and most importantly, its education. The review was conducted by Abraham Flexner, under commission of the Carnegie Foundation. Flexner's task was to determine the uniformity of medical learning throughout the United States, and to develop a systematic approach whereby the nation could improve its overall health training. The subsequent Flexner report changed the face of medical education for decades. Its tenets provoked revolutionary changes in the medical school process that are still in use today. However, some have begun to question facets of the report, and even introduce …

Teacher's Attitudes And Teacher's And Student's Knowledge Of Alcohol And Alcoholism In Selected Utah High Schools, Ladawn Anderson Gibbons

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A comparison of teacher's attitudes and teacher's and student's knowledge of alcohol and alcoholism were studied in nine selected high schools in Utah.

It was found that some teachers knew important positive facts about alcohol and alcoholism, but when personal obligations were written into "attitude" questions, their responses changed.

Some health and driver education teachers were poorly informed on the subject of alcohol and alcoholism. Some important facts known by teachers were either being deleted from instruction on alcohol or not being communicated very well.

In some schools it appears that students are learning about alcohol and alcoholism from other …

A Study Of Scholastic Achievement And Physical Performance At Logan Junior High School, Richard Sackett

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

It has been a common statement by many educators that the athletic type is a person who has "more brawn than brain." Many people assume that low physical ability usually accompanies superior mental ability and high physical ability usually accompanies inferior mental ability. Some members of the academic faculty object to relinquishing school time for athletic and sporting activities. They assume that the majority of the students involved are of the poorer academic type and cannot afford to miss school time for sporting and athletic activities. Research on previous studies support the contention that mental achievement and physical fitness are …

A Study Of Elementary Physical Education At The Whittier School, Logan, Utah, Phyllis C. Jacobson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the First World War, there has been an increased recognition for the need of physical education in the elementary school. Although educators recognize and agree on the need, they are not in agreement as to how to best achieve this need. Some educators believe that physical education should be taught as a specialized subject. Through this means, instruction is provided by a specialist who is trained in physical education. Some educators believe that physical education should be integrated with every other phase of the school program and taught by the classroom teacher. There are other educators who believe that …

A Study Of Administrative Policies And Procedures For Girls' Physical Education In Selected Secondary Schools Of Southern Utah, Ann L. Lamb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Each person in education from the Commissioner of Education down to the classroom teacher is concerned with administration. Each has administrative duties. The way these duties are conducted and carried out will have a direct influence on the outcome of any physical education program and each child within this program.

Through the Tenth Amendment responsibility for the administration of education has been turned over to the various states. Most of the states through their constitutions place the responsibility upon the legislature to provide for organization and maintenance of public school systems. This body then draws up the statutory laws and …

Opinions Of Secondary School Principals In Regard To The Intramural Activities Program In High Schools Of Utah, Thair G. Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Intramural activity programs, as employed in the modern American high school, represent a very recent and fast growing development. In early colonial days youth was necessarily absorbed in helping to build a new nation out of the wilderness. Clearing forests, building homes, and handling heavy chores were some of the tasks of which youths were an important part. They had little leisure time for play. In the modern age of today, with its frontiers established, students who are attending high school have ample leisure time for play. The direction of this play into wholesome avenues is the problem that faces …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Physical education has made unusually rapid progress during the past 50 years. Emphasis has deviated from absolute academic objectives to those permitting a well rounded educational program including the physical aspect. Physical education has been influenced by educational, spiritual, political, and social conditions.

As a result of these influences, the necessity of developing the physical has assumed major proportions. There is now a greater demand for physical education than ever before in the history of our country. For the welfare of not only the individual, but also to the state and nation, it is essential that an extremely high degree …
