Procedural Rates, Economic Costs, And Geographic Variation Of Primary And Revision Lumbar Total Disc Replacement, Anthony J. Wheeler
Procedural Rates, Economic Costs, And Geographic Variation Of Primary And Revision Lumbar Total Disc Replacement, Anthony J. Wheeler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lumbar total disc replacement (TDR) surgery is a new procedure that treats degenerative disc disease, a remarkably common, disabling, and costly condition. Three distinct studies were conducted to address the longevity, costs, and geographic variation of the lumbar TDR procedure.
These three studies found lumbar TDR to have a revision burden and economic revision burden that has remained consistent since this procedure’s introduction in the
mid-2000s. The economic revision burden made this a lower-cost procedure than lumbar fusion, with a tradeoff in terms of revision burden being higher for lumbar TDR. The overall rate at which this procedure is performed …
Effect Of Aquatic Immersion On Static Balance, Talin J. Louder
Effect Of Aquatic Immersion On Static Balance, Talin J. Louder
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Objective To quantitatively assess measures of static balance and limits of stability (LOS) in an aquatic environment compared to on land. Methods Fifteen healthy, young adults (23 + or - 2 years) performed 90 s static balance trials on land and aquatic immersion at two different depths (greater trochanter, xiphoid process). Measures of 95% ellipse area and center of pressure (CoP) mean velocity were computed from the force data. Additionally, participants completed a visual analog scale (VAS) of perceived stability for each environmental condition. Following the static balance trials, participants performed anterior-posterior and medial-lateral LOS assessments. Results Significant differences in …
Comparison Of Vo2 And Body Kinematics For Three Cycling Modes, Andrew I. Miller
Comparison Of Vo2 And Body Kinematics For Three Cycling Modes, Andrew I. Miller
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Cycling research in a laboratory has an advantage of being more tightly controlled compared to field studies; however, consideration must be given to ecological validity for the results to be best applied to its target population and environment. This was clearly demonstrated by Jones and Doust (8) where they reported treadmill running to be metabolically lower (p < 0.05) then outdoor running at the same velocity and incline. Cycling research is often targeted towards high-level cyclists interested in understanding cycling physiology and improving performance. Therefore, research results are most applicable when utilizing methods that best mimic conditions of the target population while still maintaining the control advantages that the laboratory offers
Lactate Threshold: Land Versus Water Treadmill Running, Ron T. Garner
Lactate Threshold: Land Versus Water Treadmill Running, Ron T. Garner
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Aquatic treadmill running has become increasingly popular for rehabilitation and training purposes due to decreased joint impact on the lower extremities, which is beneficial for special populations such as the injured, elderly, arthritic, and obese (Greene et al., 2009; Hall, Grant, Blake, Taylor, & Garbutt, 2004). Accordingly, researchers have compared key differences such as heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), stride frequency, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) between land and water running at maximal and submaximal efforts (Brubaker, Ozemek, Gonzalez, Wiley, & Collins, 2011; Rife, Myrer, Feland, Hunter, & Fellingham, 2010; Rutledge, Silvers, Browder, & …
Factors Affecting The Outcomes In Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report, Laura K. Parry
Factors Affecting The Outcomes In Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report, Laura K. Parry
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The purpose of this case study was to determine the effects of femoral nerve block use during total knee arthroplasty on the return of quadriceps activation and functional outcomes in a single patient. This case study focused on an individual case consisting of simultaneous bilateral knee replacement. The individual received a femoral nerve block in one knee and traditional anesthesia in the other. We considered the improvement in functional outcomes following surgery. It was expected that the femoral nerve block will delay the activation of the quadriceps muscle and the return of functional measures. However, the femoral nerve block will …

Validating Resonance Raman Spectroscopy: A Non-Invasive Assessment Of Skin Carotenoids As A Biomarker Of Fruit And Vegetable Intake In Children, Sheryl Swain Aguilar
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Background: Adult studies have found a strong correlation between serum carotenoids and skin carotenoids measured by resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS). No published studies have examined correlations between skin and serum carotenoids among children.
Objectives: (1) To validate skin RRS methodology against serum carotenoid measurements by high-performance liquid chromatography and (2) to determine if RRS skin carotenoids can be used as a valid biomarker of total fruit and vegetable (FV) intake among children.
Design: Participants were 45 healthy children age 5-17 who provided 3 blood samples used to assess serum carotenoid concentrations and 3 RRS skin measurements (using a Biophotonic ScannerTM) …
The Relationship Between Confidence And Performance Throughout A Competitive Season, Benjiman R. Skinner
The Relationship Between Confidence And Performance Throughout A Competitive Season, Benjiman R. Skinner
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The importance of understanding how confidence varies across time has been encouraged by sport confidence researchers (Vealey & Chase, 2008). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between confidence and performance throughout an entire competitive season. Two levels of confidence consistent to team sports were analyzed. Team and coach confidence were collected through the Collective Efficacy Questionnaire for Sport (CEQS) and Coaching Efficacy Scale (CES) respectively. Two teams, women’s soccer and volleyball (n=48) from a college in the western United States, completed their specific questionnaires five times throughout the season. The CEQS measured collective efficacy (team confidence) …
Effect Of Lipid Source On The Physical And Sensory Quality Of Baked Products, Haoyuan Zhong
Effect Of Lipid Source On The Physical And Sensory Quality Of Baked Products, Haoyuan Zhong
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of commercial shortenings (butter, lard, margarine, all-purpose shortenings, soybean oil, and interesterified soybean oil) on the physical and sensory characteristics of baked products was evaluated. Results showed that lipid viscoelastic character, melting point, onset melting temperature (Ton), and melting enthalpy (ΔH) affect the physical qualities of baked products, such as batter density of cake, spread of cookies, and breaking strength of pie crust. With a larger 𝛿 value (less plastic character), less crystal structure is present in the lipid and fewer air bubbles were incorporated into cake batter, which results in a denser batter. With a …
Modern Technology And An Aging Population: Can The Use Of The Wii Fit Gaming System Improve Functional Balance In Community Dwelling Seniors?, Curtis N. Phillips
Modern Technology And An Aging Population: Can The Use Of The Wii Fit Gaming System Improve Functional Balance In Community Dwelling Seniors?, Curtis N. Phillips
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Seniors are a growing segment of the population of the United States. By 2030 they will make up nearly 20% of the general population. Senior citizens face many health challenges as they age. Injury due to falling is a major concern for many in this age group. Research shows that approximately one third of seniors will fall each year. Injuries that result from falls have been identified as the number one cause of accidental death in this age group each year. While falls have been studied by researchers for a number of years, and some progress has been made in …
Concurrent Neurological And Behavioral Assessment Of Number Line Estimation Performance In Children And Adults, Joseph Michael Baker
Concurrent Neurological And Behavioral Assessment Of Number Line Estimation Performance In Children And Adults, Joseph Michael Baker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Understanding the brain’s response to common math-learning activities may help improve math education. For example, by imaging the brains of typically developing children and adults throughout a number line estimation task, it is possible to establish a baseline of what “typical” brains do in such situations. Thus, comparisons may be made to determine the degree to which brain functioning differs between typical and atypical math learners. Moreover, by identifying methods that may increase the brain’s response to real-world math activities, it may be possible to improve the math learning process for typical and atypical learners alike.
Brain imaging devices such …
Evaluating The Efficacy Of A Hybrid Nutrition Course Offered To On-Campus And Distance Education Students, Mary Anne Dimmick
Evaluating The Efficacy Of A Hybrid Nutrition Course Offered To On-Campus And Distance Education Students, Mary Anne Dimmick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A record high number of students enrolled in The Science and Application of Human Nutrition (NDFS 1020), during the Spring semester of 2010. With enrollment rates projected to continue to rise, NDFS 1020 faculty recognized that the existing traditional, lecture-based course structure did not allow for further growth of the program if academic integrity was to be upheld. NDFS 1020 was, consequently, transitioned to a hybrid format presenting 2/3 of the course experience online, and the remaining 1/3 in a face-to-face format. Hybrid NDFS 1020 was offered to distance education and on-campus students alike beginning in the Fall semester of …
Patient Perspectives Of Nutrition In Healthcare: An Exploratory Study, Matthew Gary Petersen
Patient Perspectives Of Nutrition In Healthcare: An Exploratory Study, Matthew Gary Petersen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Healthcare is one of the most debated and controversial issues facing our nation and the world today. From availability to affordability, healthcare influences the lives of millions of people daily. For more than a decade the World Health Organization has called for an integrated approach to improve global health by improving patient adherence to prescribed treatments. Despite this, very little improvement has been made in adherence trends since the 1980's. Some current research has focused on improved adherence through an understanding of the patient's perspective of healthcare. By understanding how the patient sees healthcare, physicians are able to provide more …
