Community Ecology And Capacity: Advancing Environmental Communication Strategies Among Diverse Stakeholders, Rosemary M. Caron, Michael E. Rezaee, Danielle Dionne

Health Management & Policy

1. Introduction Many socioeconomically and geographically diverse communities in the United States have been challenged by occurrences of environmental contamination and the related complex public health issues. The investigations associated with such concerns have traditionally been the responsibility of governmental agencies. Communities facing potential environmental exposures often believe that government-based environmental agencies are not adequately addressing their concerns regarding risk, thus resulting in their misunderstanding and distrust of the regulatory process. A schism develops whereby the community perceives that government is either not doing enough to address their concerns and/or are being influenced by the relevant industry. The governmental agencies …

Public Health Genomics: The Essentials. By Claudia N. Mikail, Rosemary M. Caron Jul 2009

Public Health Genomics: The Essentials. By Claudia N. Mikail, Rosemary M. Caron

Health Management & Policy

The sequencing of the human genome in 2001 provided researchers, clinicians, policymakers, ethicists, and public health practitioners with a myriad of information to potentially improve disease outcomes on an individual and population basis. Genomics is a burgeoning field of study that examines the interactions among the genetic material in the human body, including interactions with environmental and behavioral factors. The role of public health in this new field of study is complementary, since population trends, health disparities, and the social determinants of health contribute to our understanding of the underlying causes of disease provided by genomic research. Thus, the new …

The Relationship Between Resilience And Body Image In College Women, Robert J. Mcgrath, Wiggin Julie, Rosemary M. Caron Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Resilience And Body Image In College Women, Robert J. Mcgrath, Wiggin Julie, Rosemary M. Caron

Health Management & Policy

Possessing a negative body image is associated with unhealthy eating habits and eating disorders in college women and has been linked to depression and negative feelings of self worth. Limited research exists on protective factors that have the potential to mitigate body image dissatisfaction. This paper examines the relationship of resilience to body image dissatisfaction in college women. Female, undergraduate college students were studied using previously validated measures. Results indicate that increased resilience is associated with improved body image.

Cost Of Lifetime Immunosuppression Coverage For Kidney Transplant Recipients., Timothy F. Page, Robert Woodward Nov 2008

Cost Of Lifetime Immunosuppression Coverage For Kidney Transplant Recipients., Timothy F. Page, Robert Woodward

Health Management & Policy

On January 1, 2000, Medicare extended the coverage of immunosuppression medications from 3 years to life for elderly and disabled kidney transplant recipients. This research estimates the impact of extending this lifetime coverage to all kidney transplant recipients on Medicare's cash flows. The study finds that extending coverage to all kidney transplant recipients would have increased Medicare's net cash outflows if the coverage were extended for patients of all income levels. There is evidence that extending coverage to only patients in the lowest income quartile could have resulted in a net cost savings to Medicare.

Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Vaccine: Attitudes, Behaviors, And Beliefs Of At-Risk Women, Rosemary M. Caron, Elisabeth Kispert, Robert J. Mcgrath Jan 2008

Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Vaccine: Attitudes, Behaviors, And Beliefs Of At-Risk Women, Rosemary M. Caron, Elisabeth Kispert, Robert J. Mcgrath

Health Management & Policy

Cervical cancer is primarily caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and is the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality among women. Female college students may be at risk for contracting HPV based on their sexual behavior. Following the release of the HPV vaccine, Gardasil®, this cross-sectional study was developed to (1) determine awareness of HPV and Gardasil®, (2) assess attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about the HPV vaccine, and (3) identify information sources that female college students are accessing. Female college students voluntarily completed a self-administered questionnaire. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlations and paired sample t-tests. Sexually active respondents …

Urban Containment Policies And Physical Activity A Time–Series Analysis Of Metropolitan Areas, 1990–2002, Semra Aytur, Daniel A. Rodriguez, Kelly R. Evenson, Diane J. Catellier Jan 2008

Urban Containment Policies And Physical Activity A Time–Series Analysis Of Metropolitan Areas, 1990–2002, Semra Aytur, Daniel A. Rodriguez, Kelly R. Evenson, Diane J. Catellier

Health Management & Policy

Background: Urban containment policies attempt to manage the location, character, and timing of growth to support a variety of goals such as compact development, preservation of greenspace, and efficient use of infrastructure. Despite prior research evaluating the effects of urban containment policies on land use, housing, and transportation outcomes, the public health implications of these policies remain unexplored. This ecologic study examines relationships among urban containment policies, state adoption of growthmanagement legislation, and population levels of leisure and transportation-related physical activity in 63 large metropolitan statistical areas from 1990 to 2002. Methods: Multiple data sources were combined, including surveys of …

Effects Of A Tailored Follow-Up Intervention On Health Behaviors, Beliefs, And Attitudes, Alissa D. Jacobs, Alice S. Ammerman, Susan T. Ennett, Marci K. Campbell, Katherine W. Tawney, Semra Aytur, Stephen W. Marshall, Julie C. Will, Wayne D. Rosamond Jun 2004

Effects Of A Tailored Follow-Up Intervention On Health Behaviors, Beliefs, And Attitudes, Alissa D. Jacobs, Alice S. Ammerman, Susan T. Ennett, Marci K. Campbell, Katherine W. Tawney, Semra Aytur, Stephen W. Marshall, Julie C. Will, Wayne D. Rosamond

Health Management & Policy

Background: The high rates of relapse that tend to occur after short-term behavioral interventions indicate the need for maintenance programs that promote long-term adherence to new behavior patterns. Computer-tailored health messages that are mailed to participants or given in brief telephone calls offer an innovative and time-efficient alternative to ongoing face-to-face contact with healthcare providers.

Methods: Following a 1-year behavior change program, 22 North Carolina health departments were randomly assigned to a follow-up intervention or control condition. Data were collected from 1999 to 2001 by telephone-administered surveys at preintervention and postintervention for 511 low-income, midlife adult women enrolled …

The Economic Implications Of Hla Matching In Cadaveric Renal Transplantation., Mark A. Schnitzler, Christopher S. Hollenbeak, David S. Cohen, Robert Woodward, Jeffrey A. Lowell, Gary G. Singer, Raymond J. Tesi, Todd K. Howard, T Mohanakumar, Daniel C. Brennan Nov 1999

The Economic Implications Of Hla Matching In Cadaveric Renal Transplantation., Mark A. Schnitzler, Christopher S. Hollenbeak, David S. Cohen, Robert Woodward, Jeffrey A. Lowell, Gary G. Singer, Raymond J. Tesi, Todd K. Howard, T Mohanakumar, Daniel C. Brennan

Health Management & Policy

Abstract

Background: The potential economic effects of the allocation of cadaveric kidneys on the basis of tissue-matching criteria are controversial. We analyzed the economic costs associated with the transplantation of cadaveric kidneys with various numbers of HLA mismatches and examined the potential economic benefits of a local, as compared with a national, system designed to minimize HLA mismatches between donor and recipient in first cadaveric renal transplantations. Methods: All data were supplied by the U.S. Renal Data System. Data on all payments made by Medicare from 1991 through 1997 for the care of recipients of a first cadaveric renal transplant …
