OBJECTIVE: DACH1 is a transcriptional repressor and tumor suppressor gene frequently mutated in melanoma, bladder, and prostate cancer. Loss of DACH1 expression is associated with poor prognostic features and reduced overall survival in uterine cancer. In this study, we utilized the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network (ORIEN) Avatar database to determine the frequency of DACH1 mutations in patients with endometrial cancer in our Kentucky population.

METHODS: We obtained clinical and genomic data for 65 patients with endometrial cancer from the Markey Cancer Center (MCC). We examined the clinical attributes of the cancers by DACH1 status by comparing whole-exome sequencing (WES), …

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a key component of treatment in non-gynecologic peritoneal surface malignancies. As many as 10-15% of patients with a gastrointestinal primary malignancy will present with carcinomatosis. Maximal cytoreductive surgery directly affects the prognosis of patients. The routine inclusion of hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy during these procedures optimizes cytoreduction despite negative pre-operative imaging and findings at the time of surgery. In this case series, we review twenty non-gynecologic cancer patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery with concurrent hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and HIPEC at our institution.

Extreme Elevations Of Alkaline Phosphatase In Pregnancy: A Case Report, Zachary Stanley, Katherine Vignes, Miriam Marcum Jul 2020

Extreme Elevations Of Alkaline Phosphatase In Pregnancy: A Case Report, Zachary Stanley, Katherine Vignes, Miriam Marcum

Background: The normal serum concentration of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in adults over the age of 18 ranges from 37 to 116 U/L, while in pregnant women levels of up to twice that upper limit can still be normal. There have been very few reports of extreme elevations in ALP, and here we present the case of a 29-year-old pregnant woman with an incidentally found 30-fold increase.

Case: The patient, G6P2-1-2-4, received routine prenatal care, though presented to obstetric triage at 36 weeks and 1 day of gestation for diagnosis and management of viral rhinosinusitis and was found to have an …

Ccne1 Amplification As A Predictive Biomarker Of Chemotherapy Resistance In Epithelial Ovarian Cancer, Justin W. Gorski, Frederick R. Ueland, Jill M. Kolesar May 2020

Ccne1 Amplification As A Predictive Biomarker Of Chemotherapy Resistance In Epithelial Ovarian Cancer, Justin W. Gorski, Frederick R. Ueland, Jill M. Kolesar

Ovarian cancer is the most-deadly gynecologic malignancy, with greater than 14,000 women expected to succumb to the disease this year in the United States alone. In the front-line setting, patients are treated with a platinum and taxane doublet. Although 40-60% of patients achieve complete clinical response to first-line chemotherapy, 25% are inherently platinum-resistant or refractory with a median overall survival of about one year. More than 80% of women afflicted with ovarian cancer will recur. Many attempts have been made to understand the mechanism of platinum and taxane based chemotherapy resistance. However, despite decades of research, few predictive markers of …

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided funding (U01 CE002668) to evaluate bystander program efficacy to reduce gender-based violence on college campuses (Aim 1) and to create a mentoring network (Aim 2) for young campus-based researchers interested in violence intervention or prevention (VIP). While an evaluation of this mentoring program is ongoing, our purpose here was to document the strategies used to create, implement, and begin evaluation of this national multi-college mentoring network. As each public college was recruited into this evaluation named multi-college Bystander Efficacy Evaluation (mcBEE), each college was invited to nominate a researcher interested in receiving …
