Trunk control, which plays a key role in balance and mobility, decreases in patients with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and many parameters such as sensory, motor, and musculoskeletal systems affect trunk control. The aim of this study was to compare trunk control, spinal mobility, and spinal posture in PwMS with healthy controls and investigate the relationship between trunk control with spinal posture and spinal mobility in PwMS.Materials and methods: The study was completed with 38 PwMS and 38 healthy controls with matched age and sex. Trunk control was evaluated with the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS). Spinal posture and mobility were evaluated …

Background/aim: Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients may be protected against cancer because of increased immune surveillance. However, aberrant T/B cell functioning in MS may increase the risk of cancer. We aimed to compare the frequency of cancer among patients with MS with an appropriate control group matched by the variables such as age, gender, tobacco smoking history, body mass index (BMI), and family history of cancer. Materials and methods: The MS patients who were registered and followed up at the MS Center in Hacettepe University Hospitals and appropriately matched with controls were included. A self-administered questionnaire with links to the online …

Background/aim: Disease-modifying treatments (DMT) are used to prevent future relapses and disability. High long-term adherence to treatment is important to achieve disease control. This study aims to investigate and compare adherence, adverse event (AE) profiles, and frequencies, main reasons for treatment discontinuation under Teriflunomide (TERI), Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF), and Fingolimod (FNG) for relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients. This study is designed to explore patient-reported experiences in real-life settings. Materials and methods: Patients who were older than 18 years with a definite diagnosis of RRMS and no history of stem-cell transplantation were included. Outpatient clinic data files at the Neurology Department of …

Central Vein Sign: Comparison Of Multiple Sclerosis And Leukoaraiosis, Hüseyi̇n Gökhan Yavaş, Ergi̇n Sağtaş
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Leukoaraiosis produces white matter lesions (WML) similar to multiple sclerosis (MS) on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the distinction between these two conditions is difficult radiologically. This study aimed to investigate the role of the central vein sign (CVS) in susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) sequence in distinguishing MS lesions from leukoaraiosis lesions in Turkish population. Materials and methods: In this prospective study, axial SWI and sagittal three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3DFLAIR) were obtained in 374 consecutive patients. The study consisted of 169 (89 MS patients, 80 patients with leukoaraiosis) patients according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two observers …

Aim: A search of the English language literature found only one study that reported there was no relationship between depression and functional systems impairment based on Kurtzke's functional systems score in MS patients. The present cross-sectional study was planned to test that result. Materials and Methods: The study included 37 relapsing-remitting MS patients (25 female, 12 male) with an Expanded Disability Status Scale score Keywords: Multiple sclerosis, depression, cerebellum
