Compassion fatigue causes a ripple effect that impacts caregivers, patient outcomes, and the reliability of healthcare organizations. Jarrad et al. (2018) suggests the physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and organizational consequences of compassion fatigue are so extensive that they threaten the integrity of the nurse. Addressing compassion fatigue in critical care nurses is an indispensable part of maintaining the integrity and trust of the healthcare profession. We are anticipating a heightened shortage of nurses as our aging population retires. A shortage of workers tends to lead to overtime for those still in the work force. Previous research has demonstrated a link between working long hours, fatigue, and decreased performance among nurses. Fatigue has specifically been linked to on the job injuries and poorer patient outcomes. This research study examined perceived fatigue among nurses in western North Carolina. A convenience sample of nurses from five hospitals in western North Carolina was surveyed to measure fatigue, as well as compare differences in reported fatigue across varying demographic groups. …

A retrospective review of medication errors is presented as a measurement tool. Times of medication errors are separated into categories. The numbers of errors are associated with the numbers of medication administrations. The first data set contains errors that occurred within the first 8 hours of a 12-hour shift and the second data set contains errors that occurred during the last 4 hours of a 12-hour shift.
Data was obtained from a 108 bed critical care hospital in the southeastern United States. A time period will be reviewed between the months of September 2010 until August 2011. All reports of …
