Shared Situational Awareness And Actionable Knowledge: Keeping The Human In The Loop, William Chris Chambers, Robert Ryczak, Chiehwen Ed Hsu, Bob Defraites

Chiehwen Ed Hsu

We propose a shift from a network-centric to a human-centric framework to assimilate emerging technologies into more effective and persistent situational awareness, integrated with actionable knowledge. Diverse communities of interest are better positioned to unify their efforts and support commanders when they are able to share situational awareness. A recent demonstration of military utility of a medical situational awareness capability for influenza surveillance validated shared situational awareness requirements in general. The current and future information environment will increase military and government requirements for situational awareness and actionable knowledge to support many “observe, assess, plan, and execute” processes by decision-makers. The …

Timed Stance Performances Reflect Differences In Age, Prevalence Of Co-Morbidities, Medication Use, Fall’S History And Activity Level: Early Screening For Balance Loss Is Indicated, Nancy Low Choy, Sandra Brauer, Jennifer Nitz Feb 2007

Timed Stance Performances Reflect Differences In Age, Prevalence Of Co-Morbidities, Medication Use, Fall’S History And Activity Level: Early Screening For Balance Loss Is Indicated, Nancy Low Choy, Sandra Brauer, Jennifer Nitz

Objectives:
To determine if 10-second trials of bilateral and one-legged stance measures detected balance loss and influence of known risk factors for falls in women aged 20–80 years.

Methods:
456 healthy adult women attempted 10-second trials of bilateral stance (firm and foam surfaces) and one-legged stance, with eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC). Data for age, co-morbidities, medication use, fall history and activity level were compared for three categories of stability: (i) stable: all trials completed; (ii) unsteady: completed/failed one to two trials; and (iii) failed all trials.

Results:
Bilateral stance on foam (EC) and one-legged stance (EO) yielded …

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS) resulting in debilitating neuropathology. Pathogenesis is primarily defined by CNS inflammation and demyelination of nerve axons. Methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) is an enzyme that catalyzes the remethylation of homocysteine (Hcy) to methionine via cobalamin and folate dependant reactions. Cobalamin acts as an intermediate methyl carrier between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and Hcy. MTRR plays a critical role in maintaining cobalamin in an active form and is consequently an important determinant of total plasma Hcy (pHcy) concentrations. Elevated intracellular pHcy levels have been suggested to play a …

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system (CNS) chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease leading to various neurological disabilities. The disorder is more prevalent for women with a ratio of 3:2 female to male. Objectives: To investigate variation within the estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) polymorphism gene in an Australian MS case-control population using two intragenic restriction fragment length polymorphisms; the G594A located in exon 8 detected with the BtgI restriction enzyme and T938C located in intron 1, detected with PvuII. One hundred and ten Australian MS patients were studied, with patients classified clinically as Relapsing Remitting MS (RR-MS), Secondary Progressive MS …

Synergistic Induction Of Ahr Regulated Genes In Developmental Toxicity From Co-Exposure To Two Model Pahs In Zebrafish, Alicia R. Timme-Laragy, Crystal J. Cockman, Cole W. Matson, Richard T. Di Giulio Dec 2006

Synergistic Induction Of Ahr Regulated Genes In Developmental Toxicity From Co-Exposure To Two Model Pahs In Zebrafish, Alicia R. Timme-Laragy, Crystal J. Cockman, Cole W. Matson, Richard T. Di Giulio

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants created by the incomplete combustion of carbon, and are increasing in the environment largely due to the burning of fossil fuels. PAHs occur as complex mixtures, and some combinations have been shown to cause synergistic developmental toxicity in fish embryos, characterized by pericardial edema and craniofacial malformations. Previous studies have indicated that in the zebrafish model, this toxicity is mediated by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor 2 (AHR2), and enhanced by inhibition of CYP1A activity. In this study, we further examined this interaction of the model PAH and AHR agonist beta-naphthoflavone (BNF) with and without …

Depressive Symptoms And Help-Seeking Intentions In Young People., Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2006

Depressive Symptoms And Help-Seeking Intentions In Young People., Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Whether the help-negation effect as demonstrated for suicidal thoughts was also evident for depressive symptoms was investigated in three studies of young people from diverse urban areas. The studies comprised a large sample of younger high school students (years 7-10), a sample of older high school students (years 8-12), and first year university students. A self-report questionnaire that measured help-seeking intentions, prior help-seeking experiences, and depression was administered. Results revealed the strongest inverse association between level of depressive symptoms was with intentions to seek help from parents across all three samples. There was a consistent trend for students to report …

When And How Do Young People Seek Professional Help For Mental Health Problems?, Coralie J. Wilson Dec 2006

When And How Do Young People Seek Professional Help For Mental Health Problems?, Coralie J. Wilson

Coralie J Wilson

Despite the high prevalence of mental health problems and disorders that develop in adolescence and early adulthood, young people tend to not seek professional help. Young men and young people from Indigenous and ethnic minority groups tend to be those most reluctant to seek help. Young people are more inclined to seek help for mental health problems if they: have some knowledge about mental health issues and sources of help; feel emotionally competent to express their feelings; and have established and trusted relationships with potential help providers. Young people are less likely to seek help if they: are experiencing suicidal …
