In Vitro Haematopoiesis Of A Novel Dendritic-Like Cell Present In Murine Spleen, Jonathan Tan, Helen O'Neill

Jonathan Tan

Abstract: Dendritic cells (DC) are important antigen presenting cells (APC) which induce and control the adaptive immune response. In spleen alone, multiple DC subsets can be distinguished by cell surface marker phenotype. Most of these have been shown to develop from progenitors in bone marrow and to seed lymphoid and tissue sites during development. This study advances in vitro methodology for haematopoiesis of dendritic-like cells from progenitors in spleen. Since spleen progenitors undergo differentiation in vitro to produce these cells, the possibility exists that spleen represents a specific niche for differentiation of this subset. The fact that an equivalent cell …

Stranger Donors: A Key Link In Transplant Chains, Christopher Veys, Katrina Bramstedt Nov 2010

Stranger Donors: A Key Link In Transplant Chains, Christopher Veys, Katrina Bramstedt

Katrina A. Bramstedt

Living donation to strangers is a complex issue that has caused some transplant centers to ban the practice altogether. Most prominent of the troublesome issues is the common source of these donors; namely, the Internet. These "stranger donors," however, are critical to both paired kidney transplants and chain kidney transplants. This article presents the ethical complexities of donors in these transplant arrangements and offers 2 case examples from our facility. Rigorous donor screening and informed consent processes are crucial, and together they help make transplant pairs and chains ethically feasible.

Linnaeus Turns 300... Carl Linnaeus, Hans Wohlmuth

Dr Hans Wohlmuth

The article highlights the celebration of the 300th birthday of Carl Linnaeus, or Carl von Linne (as he is known in Scandinavi). Three centuries after his birth Linnaeus remains among the most famous and influential Swedes of all time, indeed his fame as a naturalist is eclipsed only by the great Charles Darwin (1809-1882).

Status Of Epa’S Proposed Rule To Strengthen The Ozone Standard, Dale Stephenson Oct 2010

Status Of Epa’S Proposed Rule To Strengthen The Ozone Standard, Dale Stephenson

Dale J. Stephenson

On January 6, 2010 the EPA rolled out a proposal to reduce the 8-hour primary standard for tropospheric (ground level) ozone from its current level of 0.075 ppm to somewhere between 0.060 ppm and 0.070 ppm. This reduction has the potential for many US airsheds to be declared as nonattainment with the new standard (including many in the Rocky Mountain West). Such a declaration will require state regulatory agencies to initiate implementation plans to bring affected airsheds back into attainment. This presentation will summarize the current status of and reasoning for EPA’s proposed reduction to the primary ozone standard and …

There was a delay of >12hours between diagnosis and operation in 64%. Axillary cannulation was performed …

Median Lethal Dose, Antimalarial Activity, Phytochemical Screening And Radical Scavenging Of Methanolic Languas Galanga Rhizome Extract, Hesham Al-Mekhlafi Oct 2010

Median Lethal Dose, Antimalarial Activity, Phytochemical Screening And Radical Scavenging Of Methanolic Languas Galanga Rhizome Extract, Hesham Al-Mekhlafi

Hesham M Al-Mekhlafi

The methanolic extract of Languas galanga rhizomes was investigated for antimalarial activity against Plasmodium berghei (NK65) infections in mice. The median lethal dose was determined to ascertain the safety of the extract in ICR mice of both sexes. The antimalarial activities during early and established infections, as well as the prophylactic activity were evaluated. Phytochemical screening and radical scavenging activity of the extract were also investigated to elucidate the possible mechanism of the antimalarial properties. The acute oral toxicity (LD(50)) of Languas galanga extract in mice was established to be 4,998 mg/kg. The extract of Languas galanga rhizomes demonstrated significant …

Comparison Of 1-Year Survival And Heart Rate Variability In Acute Coronary Syndrome. [Abstract], Patricia R.E. Harris, Phyllis K. Stein, Barbara J. Drew

Patricia Harris

Numerous studies support the use of heart rate variability (HRV) for risk stratification in the post–myocardial infarction (MI) population. However, little is known about the prognostic value of HRV measured during the acute phase of MI and unstable angina (ie, acute coronary syndrome, or ACS).

Non-Syndromic Cleft Lip And Palate: Could Stress Be A Causal Factor?, Graeme Wallace, Jacinta Arellano, Tini Gruner

Dr Tini M Gruner

The aetiology of non-syndromic cleft lip and palate has as yet not been clearly defined. Familial relationships, environmental toxins and nutritional status have all been considered without conclusive results, although in some studies a potential link between non-syndromic cleft lip and palate and any one or more of these factors has been proposed. Elevated stress, particularly an extended term of traumatic stress, can lead to oxidative damage at the cellular level via hypothalmus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation, high cortisol and cytokine production. The effect of this hormonal shift is to re-direct the blood supply to the mother's muscles, thereby reducing the …

Diarylheptanoid From Pleuranthodium Racemigerum With In Vitro Prostaglandin E2 Inhibitory And Cytotoxic Activity, Hans Wohlmuth, Myrna Deseo, Don Brushett, Dion Thompson, Graham Macfarlane, Lesley Stevenson, David Leach Oct 2010

Diarylheptanoid From Pleuranthodium Racemigerum With In Vitro Prostaglandin E2 Inhibitory And Cytotoxic Activity, Hans Wohlmuth, Myrna Deseo, Don Brushett, Dion Thompson, Graham Macfarlane, Lesley Stevenson, David Leach

Dr Hans Wohlmuth

Bioactivity-guided fractionation of an ethanolic extract of the rhizome of Pleuranthodium racemigerum, a tropical Zingiberaceae species from North-eastern Australia, resulted in the isolation and structural elucidation of 1-(4″-methoxyphenyl)-7-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-(E)-hept-2-ene (1), a new diarylheptanoid related to curcumin. Compound 1 was a fairly potent inhibitor of prostaglandin E2 production in 3T3 murine fibroblasts (IC50 ≈ 34 μM) and also displayed moderate cytotoxicity against this cell line (IC50 = 52.8 μM). The compound also demonstrated cytotoxic activity against the P388D1 murine lymphoblast cell line (IC50 = 117.0 μM) and four human cell lines: Caco-2 colonic adenocarcinoma (IC50 = 44.8 μM), PC3 prostate adenocarcinoma (IC50 …

Human Health And Environmental Hazards Of Farmed Fish, Richard B. Philp Oct 2010

Human Health And Environmental Hazards Of Farmed Fish, Richard B. Philp

Richard B. Philp

Aquaculture, or fish farming, now provides a significant portion of the world's supply of fin-fish for human consumption. Since 1985, the production of farmed fish has nearly quadrupled. Associated problems include levels of persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals as compared to wild-caught fish, enviromnental problems from waste food and excrement, disease hazards for fish and humans and depletion of wild forage fish to produce food pellets for farmed fish. The recent introduction of genetically modified salmon has added another potential hazard for the environment and possible for human health. These and other problems are discussed with recommendations for human …

Mentoring: A Nurse Educator Survey, Connie Hubbard, Kathleen Halcomb, Brenda Foley, Bridget Roberts

Bridget R. Roberts

Mentoring promotes success throughout the careers of nurse educators. This pilot study discusses findings from a survey administered at the 18th Annual Nurse Educator Conference in the Rockies. Facilitators of and barriers to mentoring were identified by participants and clustered into themes by researchers. The findings are useful to associate degree nursing programs because issues surrounding the nurse educator shortage are addressed. Strategies to develop effective mentoring programs to assist in recruiting and retaining qualified nurse educators are discussed.

The Impact Of Extended-Hours Home Hemodialysis And Buttonhole Cannulation Technique On Hospitalization Rates For Septic Events Related To Dialysis Access, Carolyn Van Eps, Mark Jones, Tsun Ng, David Johnson, Scott Campbell, Nicole Isbel, David Mudge, Elaine Beller, Carmel Hawley Sep 2010

The Impact Of Extended-Hours Home Hemodialysis And Buttonhole Cannulation Technique On Hospitalization Rates For Septic Events Related To Dialysis Access, Carolyn Van Eps, Mark Jones, Tsun Ng, David Johnson, Scott Campbell, Nicole Isbel, David Mudge, Elaine Beller, Carmel Hawley

Elaine Beller

Few studies adequately document adverse events in patients receiving long, slow, and overnight hemodialysis (NHD). Concerns about high rates of dialysis access complications have been raised. This is an observational cohort study comparing hospital admission rates for vascular access complications between alternate nightly NHD (n=63) and conventional hemodialysis (n=172) patients established on chronic hemodialysis for at least 3 months. Overall, hospital admission rates and hospital admission rates for cardiac and all infective events are also reported. The NHD cohort was younger and less likely to be female, diabetic, or have ischemic heart disease than the conventional hemodialysis cohort. When NHD …

The Case Of Brian - A Reality Check On The Safe Use Of Medicines In Rural Australia, Janie Smith Sep 2010

The Case Of Brian - A Reality Check On The Safe Use Of Medicines In Rural Australia, Janie Smith

Janie Smith

We often read or hear about the many wonderful developments in home medication reviews, ways of communicating with consumers and our quality improvement systems. But what does this mean at the coal-face for those older Australians living in rural and remote communities? Are these initiatives having an impact? Do people know about them and are they sustainable? The words sustainable and rural are often used together, not because rural is sustainable, but often because it is not. The Oxford Dictionary tells us that ‘sustainability’ means maintaining at length without interruption, weakening, losing power or quality; or to bear up from, …
