The Biomechanical Analysis Of Two Types Of Place Kicks: The Toe And Instep Kicks, Kaylynn Albers
The Biomechanical Analysis Of Two Types Of Place Kicks: The Toe And Instep Kicks, Kaylynn Albers
Masters Theses
This study described the biomechanical differences between two styles of the place kick; the toe kick and instep kick. The biomechanical variables included joint angles, velocities, and displacements. Five high school age subjects kicked five trials of the toe kick and five trials of the instep kick at both 20 and 35 yards. The place kicks were filmed with a high speed camera, digitized and analyzed with peak 4.2 computer software.
The findings for joint angles were consistent with those found in the literature. The velocity for the kicking foot and the ball were lower in this study than found …
Co-Sensitization Of Dopamine And Serotonin Receptors Occurs In The Absence Of A Change In The Dopamine D1 Receptor Complex After A Neonatal 6-Ohda Lesion, Li Gong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To test whether SKF 38393 could ontogenetically sensitize dopamine (DA) D$\sb1$ receptors and whether this sensitization would be associated with biochemical changes, intact and neonatal 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rats (200 $\mu$g i.c.v.) were treated daily from birth with SKF 38393 (3.0 mg/kg i.p. x 28 days) or its vehicle. In DA D$\sb1$ neonatally sensitized 6-OHDA rats, enhanced locomotor responses were observed with the first SKF 38393 challenge dose (3.0 mg/kg i.p.) at 6 weeks. This response increased further with weekly SKF 38393 treatments. Enhanced stereotyped behaviors were seen in both lesioned and sensitized rats at 8 weeks. There was no change …

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
Postoperative myalgia was measured 24 and 72 hours following the administration of four different anesthetic regimens to 36 patients undergoing outpatient or 23-hour admission procedures. Each patient, ASA class I or II, was to undergo procedures of limited duration, 30 to 90 minutes, and surgical stimulation, including procedures such as knee arthroscopy, hernia repair, and breast biopsy. Anesthesia was induced with propofol 1.5 mg/kg, fentanyl 50 mcg, and maintained with O2 , N2O, and isoflurane. Group I (n=20), the control, received no muscle relaxant and was maintained with mask ventilation. Group II (n=5) received succinylcholine 1.5 mg/kg …
The Degree Of Exposure To Anesthetic Nitrous Oxide Waste Gas In The Operating Room During Various Surgical Procedures, Kathryn Ann Longworth
The Degree Of Exposure To Anesthetic Nitrous Oxide Waste Gas In The Operating Room During Various Surgical Procedures, Kathryn Ann Longworth
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
Halsey (1991) summarized the underlying reasons for continuing concern about the problem of waste anesthetic gases. Careful and systematic monitoring studies indicate that individual trends in anesthetic pollution levels are not as low as was confidently predicted 10 years ago, when scavenging devices became commonplace. Second, there are now clear legal requirements for assessment of the situation. It is estimated that each year more than 200,000 health professionals are occupationally at risk of illness as a consequence of chronic exposure to low doses of waste anesthetic gases (Rogers, 1986).
These contaminants are suspected pf being ~eratogenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and embryo-lethal. …

The Delaware Division of Public Health reported only two cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population in 1992. As of March 1, 1993, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report indicated only one case of meningococcal disease in the state of Delaware for 1993. However, from the end of February to early April 1993, approximately six weeks, there were seven cases of documented meningococcal infection in the pediatric population that either presented or were transferred to one of the pediatric care facilities in the Wilmington, Delaware area. Notification of these cases to the Delaware Division of Public Health prompted …

Works on Radiation Effects: 1990-2020
This an early note to Dennis Sokol who Armin met with at the request of Ambassador Robert Strauss during his first trip to Russia (the meeting with the ambassador was facilitated also by Billy Goldberg). Dennis was a US entrepreneur who was establishing Western style clinics in the former USSR and the ambassador thought we could help especially based on his knowledge of the BCM/TMH affiliation with the Admiral Bristol Hospital that became the American Hospital of Istanbul. Section of Gastroenterology
Microscopic colitis is a syndrome of chronic watery diarrhoea for which no cause can be identified other than the presence of diffuse, chronic inflammation in the lamina propria on colonic biopsy. Endoscopically and radiologically the colon appears normal. We studied case records of 215 patients presenting to our institution over a three year period with chronic diarrhoea. Nineteen patients were included in the study where two pathologists agreed on the presence of chronic inflammation on colonic biopsies. All patients had watery diarrhoea with urgency. Stool examination, laboratory indices, radiology of the large and small bowel and colonoscopy were normal in …

The Effect Of The Cooper Wellness Program In Promoting Long- Term Lifestyle Behavior Changes, Ernesto P. S. Medina Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Most research on health behavior change programs examines their effectiveness in producing initial behavior changes, but fails to evaluate long-term maintenance of those changes. This study examined the effectiveness of the Cooper Wellness Program (CWP) in Dallas, Texas, in promoting maintenance of lifestyle behavior changes for one year or longer in the areas of diet, exercise, and stress management.
The CWP offers an intensive live-in lifestyle behavior modification program in four-, seven-, or 13-day formats. Data were collected from 223 individuals who attended the CWP between January, 1989, to February, 1992. The study addressed the following areas: 1) long-term maintenance …

Section of Internal Medicine
Two cases of polyarthritis in young people with extra-articular tuberculosis are described. The clinical features were consistent with the concept of Poncet's disease. After synovial biopsy one patient proved to have tuberculous peripheral arthritis. This observation raised doubts about the diagnosis in the other patient. Multiple joints may be simultaneously infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Poncet's disease, if it exists, should not be entertained in the absence of synovial biopsy.

Ochrobactrum Anthropi Bacteremia In A Child., Joel D. Klein, Stephen C. Eppes
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Children undergoing chemotherapy for cancer are at increased risk of supervening infection, including bacteremia. This may be due to immunosuppression as well as the presence of intravascular devices such as central venous catheters. Bacteria responsible for these infections include those found in the child's endogenous flora as well as in environmental sources. We report the case of a child with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed bacteremia secondary to Ochrobactrum anthropi. Details of this extremely rare infection are the focus of this report.

Does Red Blood Cell Distribution Width (Rdw) Improve Evaluation Of Microcytic Anaemias?, Muhammad Sajjad Baqar, Mohammad Khurshid, A Molla
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Abstract
The red cell distribution width (RDW) is an index of the variation in red cells size (anisocytosis). A study was conducted to examine the validity of using RDW in improving classification of microcytic anaemias. A total of 300 blood samples collected from a patient population aged 3 months to 55 years who were referred for haemoglobin electrophoresis were examined at The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). On complete blood count, initially 200 patients (66.6%) were found to have hypochromic microcytic anaemia. Following haemoglobin electrophoresis 41% (821200) patients were diagnosed to have thalassemia minor and 59% (1181200) had hypochromic microcytic …

The classification of pneumoconiosis on 108 paired radiographs obtained in coal miners was compared by using conventional radiograph film images and digitized images of those conventional film images. Conventional film images and digitized images were each independently read in a random order in two separate sessions by three radiologists certified as "B" readers. Overall, the digitized images were perceived as being of better quality than the conventional film images (radiograph quality grade 1, 48% [617 of 1,292 classifications] vs 37% [482 of 1,296], respectively; P < .001). The mean International Labour Office (ILO) scores for small-opacity profusion were similar between the digitized images and conventional film images (3.14 vs 3.24, respectively; P = .19). The mean absolute differences in small-opacity profusion score between radiograph pairs were also similar (0.74 vs 0.77, respectively; P = .50). No difference in the ILO type of opacity was noted between the display modes. Interpretation of digitized images for pneumoconiotic small opacities was shown to be an acceptable alternative to interpretation of conventional film images; the important problem of reader variability affects both display modes.
Suppressive Effects Of Transforming Factor-Β And Interleukin-10 On The Cytolytic Activity Of Murine Macrophages And Reversal By Cytokines, Chin-Hung Lin
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In this study, the suppressive effects of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) on peritoneal macrophage killing of H238 target cells and the potential for reversal of the immunosuppressive effect by IL-4 and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) were investigated. The responsiveness of naive and peptone-activated macrophages was compared. The cytolytic activity for tumor cells of these effector cells was measured by percent lysis of 3H-thymidine labeled Herpes simplex virus type 2-transformed tumor cells (H238). After 18-24 hours of incubation with TGF-β or IL-10, the cytolytic activity of macro-medium alone. The immunosuppressive effect of TGF-β or IL-10 on non-activated macrophages was …
