Given the potential reduction in risk of coronary events with modifiable behaviors, primary care physicians are in a unique position to be able to use shared decision making and patient education to help dramatically reduce the potential burden of cardiovascular disease. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is traditionally considered a male disease, yet it is the leading cause of death in women. This may be associated with the significant lack of research of ASCVD in women, leading to poor recognition, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The American Heart Association reports that a majority of women experience prodromal symptoms more than one month before a heart attack or stroke, and these symptoms are often underestimated. More than 6 million women in the United States experience menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms annually. Although up to 80% of women experience vasomotor symptoms, there continues to be stigma surrounding conversations of menopause and its associated symptoms. Due to this pervasive taboo, women often dismiss or ignore their symptoms. This neglect leads to greater utilization of healthcare resources and increased productivity losses with an ultimate economic burden of more than $810 billion in the US.
