An Educational Intervention Differentiating Pressure Injuries From End-Of-Life Wounds, Alicia Perez Varela, Annette Callis

Background

End-of-life (EOL) wounds are identified in the literature as Kennedy Terminal Ulcers (KTU), Skin Failure (SF), Trombley-Brennan Terminal Tissue Injury (TB-TTI), and SCALE (Skin Changes at Life’s End). EOL wounds have a similar appearance to pressure injuries (PIs) with a fundamentally different etiology. The misclassification of EOL wounds as PIs results in increased Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI), hospital fines, and less-than-optimal EOL wound management.

Purpose

To examine the effectiveness of an educational intervention on EOL wounds in increasing nurse confidence in providing End-of-Life Care (EOLC) and differentiating PIs from EOL wounds.

Background

New graduate nurses (NGNs) in acute care settings are particularly vulnerable to the stressors inherent in nursing, due to the immense amount of experiential learning required at the bedside during the first year of practice. The high amount of stress experienced by NGNs is reflected in high turnover rates. Nurses with less than two years of experience accounted for almost half (47.5%) of all nurse turnovers in 2019. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused much physical and emotional turmoil in the nursing profession due to the increased workload and emotional distress. Background: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Operating Room (OR) nurses were redeployed to patient care units during times of maximal surge capacity in hospitals caring for patients with the novel coronavirus. Hospital bed and staffing needs caused hospitals to cancel elective surgeries, allowing for conservation of bed space and nurses to accommodate the patient influx. Despite the highly specialized nature and skill set of OR nursing, OR nurses were expected to function in traditional patient care roles, where levels of self-assessed competence vary based on experience and training. Background: Registered nurses (RN) working in acute-care hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic reported unprecedented stress. Walking between 7000-10,000 steps each day offers positive benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress, and reduction in overall mortality risk. Additionally, the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Physical Activity Guidelines recommends adults should engage in 75 -150 minutes per week of moderate to intense activity for health benefits.
