Background: Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare and commonly fatal obstetric emergency theorized to trigger an inflammatory reaction much like the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) of sepsis, leading to vascular constriction and coagulation. This often results in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), cardiopulmonary arrest, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and death. With similar theorized mechanisms, we suspect factors that may modify mortality in sepsis may also modify mortality in AFE. Specifically, we ask if alterations in the coagulation cascade of heterozygous Factor V Leiden mutation (FVL+/-) can decrease mortality as seen in studies with severe sepsis. The following case …

The Role Of Adhesives In Dermatologic Surgery: Tips, Tricks And Review, Adam Chahine, Stefanie Lynn Altmann, Mariam Salman, Karthik Krishnamurthy
Dermatology
Background: The utilization of tissue adhesives for wound closure has historically been well established in the emergency department setting. More recently, it has been adopted by dermatologists and other surgical specialties as an alternative or adjunct to more traditional bilayered wound closures.
Purpose: This serves as a comprehensive review of the available scientific literature on the utilization of tissue adhesives compared to traditional bilayered closures. We discuss benefits, drawbacks, as well as novel surgical techniques, as applicable to dermatologic surgery.
Methods: A literature review was performed using Pubmed and MEDLINE for relevant articles related to the use of adhesives and …

Two Resident Wellness Exercises And Their Impact, Nick J. Mccauley
Emergency Medicine
How program leaders in the CORD community are implementing innovations to improve residency wellness and resident resilience.
- Define resilience and describe how it can prevent burnout.
- Discuss ways that residency programs can work to promote resilience amongst residents COURSE DESCRIPTIONS #CORDAA20 35
- Introduce ‘Resilience Rounds’ as a didactic intervention, and the literature upon which this innovation is based
- Introduce art as a tool to overcome trauma and prevent burnout
- Demonstrate how conference/didactic time can help residents combat the perceived “culture of perfection” by sharing meaningful or successful moments with each other to improve one’s general outlook on their own practice
Scheduling Like A Pro, Joseph Gibney
Scheduling Like A Pro, Joseph Gibney
Emergency Medicine
Scheduling is difficult, but believe it or not, it can also be rewarding. This is one chief’s take on three years of scheduling and the highs, lows, do’s, don’ts, and novel ways to help your fellow residents live their best residency life.
- Show that resident wellness is impacted by scheduling
- Demonstrate our scheduling process, some errors we made over time, and how we learned from them
- Discuss some novel scheduling tactics, how other residencies may apply what we’ve learned, and how to adapt it to fit their needs

The Role Of Mindset, Impostorism, And Irrational Beliefs In Resident Wellness: Results From The Hca Nationwide Longitudinal Resident Wellness Study, Gregory Guldner, Jason Siegel, Brendon Ellis, Anne Brafford
Teaching & Learning
Background The significant proportion of residents reporting poor levels of well-being has appropriately fueled a call for interventions. Yet the specific constructs that impact well-being have not been well researched and validated in the resident population. Mindset (fixed versus growth), impostorism (the belief that one’s success is fraudulent) and irrational beliefs (dysfunctional beliefs that contribute to emotional pain and anguish) are among individual variables postulated to relate to well-being in a high-pressure educational environment. Each of these constructs is amenable to interventions should they have causal relationships to well-being.
Objectives Our prior research resulted in a statistically validated model of …

Isolated Forefoot Juvenile Xanthogranuloma: Unique Case Study And Treatment In A Pediatric Patient, Brian Derner Dpm, Kristine Hoffman, Amy Storfa Md, Dustin Kruse Dpm, Paul A. Stone Dpm, Facfas
Podiatry
Juvenile xanthogranulomas (JXG) are a benign histiocytic cell proliferative disorder in early childhood. They most commonly present within the first two years of life with papular or nodular changes to the skin on the head, neck or upper trunk. Xanthogranulomas are mostly self-limiting, can be singular or multiple, and rarely can infer a systemic disease process1. The purpose of this study was to publish a unique finding of an extra-tendinous solitary mass in an otherwise healthy 17-year old, with surgical and medical treatment after diagnosis.

Program Evaluation In Women's Health Integration For Podiatric Residents, Nilin M. Rao Dpm, Carol A. Stamm Md, Elizabeth Ihler Md, Dustin Kruse Dpm, Paul A. Stone Dpm, Facfas
Podiatry
As the podiatric profession strives for professional and financial parity with allopathic and osteopathic colleagues, podiatric medical education has been transformed at both undergraduate and graduate levels to more closely align in important ways. The purpose of this program evaluation is to share the benefits of including a women’s health rotation into the required graduate medical training curriculum, share the initial experience of the first resident cohort receiving this training, and provide ideas to other programs that may be interested in providing similar program implementation for their residents.

Atypical Spindle Cell Lipomatous Tumor Under The Sesamoids In The Foot: A Case Report, Nilin M. Rao Dpm, Hani H. Saeed Dpm, Md, Facfas, Dustin Kruse Dpm, Bryan Raymond Dpm, Paul A. Stone Dpm, Facfas
Podiatry
Atypical spindle cell lipomatous (ASCL) tumors have a distinct histological and clinical presentation, rarely presenting in the foot. With the sub-sesamoidal location of this neoplasm found in our case report being an unusual location for atypical spindle cell lipomatous tumors to present, the purpose of our case report was to present the clinical presentation, histology/pathology, method of resection and outcome of our patient on follow-up to provide a framework for other surgeons on how to approach these neoplasms in the future.
