INTRODUCTION: Lumbar spine pedicle screws are the most commonly utilized implants for providing immediate spinal stability during fusion surgery. Ideal pedicle screw positioning includes avoiding violation of any adjacent unfused facet joints. Nevertheless, inadvertent screw malposition and screw-associated violation of adjacent facet joints (FJV) remains a potential complication of the procedure regardless of whether surgery is performed in open fashion or with minimally invasive techniques and despite the use of intraoperative imaging or surgical navigation. Given the proximity of the lumbar vertebral pedicle to the proximal facet joint, FJV occurs almost exclusively at the level of the proximal as opposed …

BACKGROUND: The SAR-CoV-2 pandemic continues to negatively impact the healthcare system globally with over 800,000 deaths in the United States and millions more worldwide. The cases are rising despite availability of vaccines. For most immunocompetent patients these vaccines will generate a humoral response and also a memory T-cell response. Few if any studies have reported data that measure anti-spike IgG titers and also correlate those titers with clinical outcomes in the instance of breakthrough infection.

METHODS: We conducted a pilot prospective observational clinical study enrolling 30 immunocompetent patients who were admitted with a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR. Leftover blood from admission …

Small bowel obstruction: blockage in small intestine. Adhesions are the most common cause. Accounts for 300,000 hospitalizations in the US annually, and 20% of emergency surgical procedures in patients with abdominal pain. High morbidity and mortality. Average hospital stay of 8 days. 30-day readmission rate of 16%. In-hospital mortality rate of 3%. Costly diagnosis: more than $2 billion spent on admissions for adhesion-related disease in the United States. Clinical presentation: variable, includes abdominal pain, vomiting, constipation, nausea, and abdominal distention. Management. Operative: important if signs of ischemia, peritonitis, or strangulation. Conservative: includes bowel rest, nasogastric decompression, serial examinations, and a …

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Introduction: There is a paucity of patient reported outcome measures (PROM) data for women with urethral strictures. Prior literature focuses on anatomic success, with almost no data describing patient centered outcomes. To fill this critical gap, we aim to evaluate change in PROM among women who underwent surgery for stricture. Methods: Data were collected as part of a multiinstitutional retrospective cohort study of women treated for urethral stricture between 2010-19. Median change between baseline and postoperative follow-up on the American Urological Association Symptom Index (AUA-SI) and Urinary Distress Inventory (UDI-6) were assessed using paired Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results: Of the …
