Helicobacter-Pylori Negative Gastritis In Children—A New Clinical Enigma, Yoram Elitsur, Deborah L. Preston Oct 2014

Helicobacter-Pylori Negative Gastritis In Children—A New Clinical Enigma, Yoram Elitsur, Deborah L. Preston

Biochemistry and Microbiology

The decrease in the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection in children in the world gave rise to a new pathological finding termed as Hp-negative gastritis. Unfortunately, the term “Hp-negative gastritis” has not been identified as a pathological process and has the status of a “second cousin”; in most publications it was never mentioned as a subject to be dealt with, but was “left over” data that was never the topic of the manuscripts’ discussions. Only recently has the topic captured the attention of the pathologists who described this phenomenon in adults, yet the pathological and/or clinical spectrum or significance …

In Adult Smokers Unwilling Or Unable To Quit, Does Changing From Tobacco Cigarettes To Electronic Cigarettes Decrease The Incidence Of Negative Health Effects Associated With Smoking Tobacco? A Clin-Iq, Jennifer Brown, Brandon Brown, Peter Schwiebert, Kalyanakrishnan Ramakrisnan, Laine H. Mccarthy

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Data from a randomized controlled trial and systematic review support the claim that switching from tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) can reduce the short-term negative health effects of smoking. In adult smokers unwilling or unable to quit, exhaled carbon monoxide levels, total number of cigarettes smoked, and exposure to nitrosamine chemicals were reduced within a 12-month period. While the e-cigarette industry remains largely unregulated thus far, these studies provide encouraging hope in the uphill battle toward helping patients make informed and healthy choices.

Household Reporting Of Childhood Respiratory Health And Air Pollution In Rural Alaska Native Communities, Desirae N. Ware, Johnnye Lewis, Scarlett Hopkins, Bert Boyer, Luke Montrose, Curis W. Noonan, Erin O. Semmens, Tony J. Ward

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background. Air pollution is an important contributor to respiratory disease in children.

Objective. To examine associations between household reporting of childhood respiratory conditions and household characteristics related to air pollution in Alaska Native communities.

Design. In-home surveys were administered in 2 rural regions of Alaska. The 12-month prevalence of respiratory conditions was summarized by region and age. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to describe associations between respiratory health and household and air quality characteristics.

Results. Household-reported respiratory health data were collected for 561 children in 328 households. In 1 region, 33.6% of children aged/or bronchitis. Children with these conditions …

Safety Of Infliximab In Children With Ibd: The Experience Of An Academic Center In Wv, Michael Northcutt Md, Awni Al-Subu Md, Brooke Bella Rn, Yoram Elitsur Md

Biochemistry and Microbiology

BACKGROUND: The immune-modulating drug, infliximab, is approved for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) treatment in children. Chronic therapy with infliximab is associated with the development of early and delayed infusion reactions. We reviewed our experience with infliximab treatment and its side effects in a cohort of children diagnosed with IBD who were treated in our clinic.

METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all IBD children treated with infliximab in our center from 2006-2011 was performed. The demographic, chronological and clinical data were recorded. The infliximab infusion was given at 5mg/ kg according to a standard protocol after pre-treatment with low dose …

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by the abnormal infiltration of mast cells in the skin and sometimes other organs. This study aimed to compare the demographic, clinical, and histopathological findings of cutaneous mastocytosis with onset in children and in adults. Materials and methods: Patients diagnosed with cutaneous mastocytosis in 2 different dermatology clinics between 2007 and 2011 were included in the study. Demographic characteristics of the patients as well as localization and type of the cutaneous lesions, presence of symptoms, Darier's sign, family history, systemic involvement, and histopathological evaluations were retrospectively examined. Results: Out of the 30 …

Evaluation of cardiac structures requires a large study group for accurate data on normal values. The aim of the study was to obtain normal M mode echocardiographic values in a substantial sample of healthy term neonates and children to develop centile charts. Materials and methods: Data were obtained over 2 years from a single center in Turkey, from 1200 healthy infants and children aged 1 day to 17 years. Using echocardiographic investigation, measurements were obtained of the following: left ventricular dimension at end diastole and end systole; thickness of interventricular septum and posterior wall of the left ventricle; aortic and …

To determine the prevalence of and risk factors for decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and vitamin D deficiency in children and adolescents with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). Materials and methods: This study was conducted on 30 girls and 22 boys with CAH (age range = 5-20 years) with median age of 12.0 years. BMD values of lumbar vertebras (L1-L4), which were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, were used to calculate z-scores according to chronological age. A serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of

Stress Indicators During General Anesthesia With Opioid Analgesics In Children, Biljana Draskovic, Danica Stanic, Anna Uram-Benka, Izabela Fabri

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To determine which of the applied opioid analgesics brings the most powerful blockade of the stress response with the fewest side effects in children. Materials and methods: This was a prospective, observational clinical study. The study included 150 boys, aged 2-5 years, ASA I, who underwent herniectomy or orchidopexy in day case surgery. The introduction and maintenance of anesthesia was intravenous (propofol, rocuronium, and opioids); airway was maintained by laryngeal mask and ventilation by mixture of oxygen/air. Subjects were divided into 3 groups depending on the applied opioid analgesics (fentanyl, alfentanil, remifentanil). Results: The fentanyl group had the highest blood …

To investigate the age- and sex-associated carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) changes in healthy children to determine the age- and sex-specific normal range of values for childhood. Materials and methods: This study examined 91 healthy school-age children aged 7-15 years prospectively. Standardized sonographic cIMT measurements and analyses were performed. Body mass index and blood pressure were obtained, and atherosclerotic risk factors were investigated. Age-and sex-specific cIMT measurements for different age groups were calculated and the relation with sex was investigated. Results: Regarding the total study group, mean cIMT measurements for age groups 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15 years were 4.1 ± …

Is The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Childhood Acute Bacterial Meningitis In Turkey Evidence-Based?, Özden Türel, Mustafa Bakir

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Evidence-based guidance is likely to significantly improve patient care. We aimed to characterize the adequacy of standard diagnostic methods and treatment in children with acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) in Turkey. Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective study among children 1 month to 5 years old hospitalized with ABM in İstanbul. The World Health Organization case definition and laboratory criteria were used for diagnosis. Results: Of the 283 cases, 250 were probable and 33 (11.2%) were confirmed as bacterial meningitis. The majority of patients (92%) were treated at 9 governmental hospitals and the remaining 21 at 2 university hospitals. Blood …
