Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
Introduction:
Bempedoic acid (BA) is an inhibitor of ATP-citrate lyase (ACL) and is used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have shown the efficacy of BA in lowering LDL-C levels and it is currently approved as a treatment option for patients with hyperlipidemia to achieve target LDL-C levels. We conducted a systematic review to further elucidate the efficacy and safety profile of BA in patients with hyperlipidemia.
Methods:
We searched the electronic database Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Library for RCTs between 2013 and 2023. We used keywords (“Bempedoic Acid”) AND (“Hypercholesterolemia”) AND (“Lipid …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Background
In the United States, there are over seven million stroke survivors, with many facing gait impairments due to foot drop. This restricts their community ambulation and hinders functional independence, leading to several long-term health complications. Despite the best available physical therapy, gait function is incompletely recovered, and this occurs mainly during the acute phase post-stroke. Therapeutic options are limited currently. Novel therapies based on neurobiological principles have the potential to lead to long-term functional improvements. The Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) controlled Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) system is one such strategy. It is based on Hebbian principles and has shown promise …

Background/aim: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital viral infection. Although most children with congenital CMV (approximately 85%–90%) are asymptomatic at birth, findings such as sensorineural hearing loss, microcephaly, and neurodevelopmental retardation can be observed during the follow-up. Among the brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of CMV are white matter abnormalities, polymicrogyria, and periventricular calcification. Since a definitive diagnosis of congenital CMV cannot be made after the neonatal period, the identification of the associated phenotype is diagnostically important, but data are limited in patients who have been retrospectively diagnosed with congenital CMV infection. The aim of this study was …

The Brainstem As A Conserved System For Consciousness: Integrating Phylogeny, Neurology, And Psychology, Shadia Kawkabani, Kevin P. Kaut
Journal of Neuropsychology and Behavioral Processes
Historically, scientists and physicians have taken a corticocentric view of consciousness, emphasizing the need for a cortex in producing the conscious experience. The preserved consciousness observed in hydranencephalic children and decorticated rats suggests that some form of consciousness may be produced by a subcortical network. The brainstem, a phylogenetically conserved brain system, could serve as the major integrative network to produce this form of consciousness—referred to as ‘affective consciousness’, the evolutionary antecedent to the reflective consciousness allowing humans to reflect on experiences. The functional integration of the brainstem with the amygdala, motor network, and other subcortical structures provides the architecture …

Quantitative Proteomic Analysis Reveals Unique Hsp90 Cycle-Dependent Client Interactions, Erick I Rios, Davi Gonçalves, Kevin A Morano, Jill L Johnson
Journal Articles
Hsp90 is an abundant and essential molecular chaperone that mediates the folding and activation of client proteins in a nucleotide-dependent cycle. Hsp90 inhibition directly or indirectly impacts the function of 10-15% of all proteins due to degradation of client proteins or indirect downstream effects. Due to its role in chaperoning oncogenic proteins, Hsp90 is an important drug target. However, compounds that occupy the ATP-binding pocket and broadly inhibit function have not achieved widespread use due to negative effects. More selective inhibitors are needed; however, it is unclear how to achieve selective inhibition. We conducted a quantitative proteomic analysis of soluble …

Background: The escalating incidence of antimicrobial resistance in Gram-negative bacteria has elicited worldwide apprehension owing to its profound ramifications, such as the emergence of infections that cannot be effectively treated and may result in mortality. The poultry industry is of significant concern due to its substantial utilization of antimicrobials, including those regarded as last-resort therapies for complex multi-drug resistant Gram-negative infections. Methods: A comprehensive collection of ninety cloacal swabs was undertaken from a diverse range of thirty poultry farms located within the Nablus governorate during the period spanning from March to June in the year 2019. The swabs, specifically collected …

Research suggests that as we get older, executive function abilities decline (Hasher & Zacks, 1988; Salthouse, 1996). One affected ability is that of inhibitory control, which aids in monitoring our responses to non-target stimuli or information. Current research on inhibition reveals inconsistencies across studies. Monitoring brain responses during the Flanker (used to measure inhibitory control) task may add valuable insight into the processes underlying group differences behaviorally, by studying the N200 and P300 event-related potentials which have been associated with inhibitory control processes. This study investigated whether there are differences between older and younger adults in inhibitory control and whether …

With dementia incidence projected to escalate significantly within the next 25 years, the United Nations declared 2021–2030 the Decade of Healthy Ageing, emphasising cognition as a crucial element. As a leading discipline in cognition and ageing research, psychology is well-equipped to offer insights for translational research, clinical practice, and policy-making. In this comprehensive review, we discuss the current state of knowledge on age-related changes in cognition and psychological health. We discuss cognitive changes during ageing, including (a) heterogeneity in the rate, trajectory, and characteristics of decline experienced by older adults, (b) the role of cognitive reserve in age-related cognitive decline, …
