Nucleate Boiling Under Different Gravity Values: Numerical Simulations & Data-Driven Techniques., Sandipan Banerjee May 2022

Nucleate Boiling Under Different Gravity Values: Numerical Simulations & Data-Driven Techniques., Sandipan Banerjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nucleate boiling is important in nuclear applications and cooling applications under earth gravity conditions. Under reduced gravity or microgravity environment, it is significant too, especially in space exploration applications. Although multiple studies have been performed on nucleate boiling, the effect of gravity on nucleate boiling is not well understood. This dissertation primarily deals with numerical simulations of nucleate boiling using an adaptive Moment-of-Fluid (MoF) method for a single vapor bubble (water vapor or Perfluoro-n-hexane) in saturated liquid for different gravity levels. Results concerning the growth rate of the bubble, specifically the departure diameter and departure time have been provided. The …

Survivability Investigation Of Cylindrical Shaped Water Cooled Probe In High Heat Flux Conditions, Joshua Osborne Aug 2020

Survivability Investigation Of Cylindrical Shaped Water Cooled Probe In High Heat Flux Conditions, Joshua Osborne

Masters Theses

Diagnostics and data collection downstream of turbine engine augmentors and scramjet combustors provide critical information for turbine engine and scramjet engine developers. One important diagnostic tool is the use of imaging measurement instruments, which are primarily used by the aeropropulsion ground testing community to assess flame holder stability and uniformity in turbine engines. The survivability limitations of these imaging probes are important to understand for use in applications behind ramjet or scramjet engines, where mass flows and exhaust temperatures exceed typical engine augmentor exhaust streams. At a minimum, imaging data acquired behind ramjet and scramjet engines would be used to …

Assessment Of Annular Flow Boiling In The Context Of Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Simulations, Experiments, And Existing Correlations, Hrishikesh Prasad Ranga Prasad Jan 2017

Assessment Of Annular Flow Boiling In The Context Of Computational Fluid Dynamics (Cfd) Simulations, Experiments, And Existing Correlations, Hrishikesh Prasad Ranga Prasad

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The main objective of the current work is to achieve a better understanding – through modeling and simulation/programming activities – of annular flow-boiling and its applications based on a synthesis of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, existing correlations, and experiments. A unique and rigorous 2-D CFD simulations technique was developed for annular flow-boiling to propose a correlation for convective component of Heat Transfer Coefficient (HTC) – defined here as flow-boiling in the absence of nucleation. To provide a context for the correlation structure of convective component of HTC, flow-physics details of annular flow-boiling and correlation structure (based on fundamental considerations) …

Ideal hydrophobic-hydrophilic composite cavities are highly desired to enhance nucleate boiling. However, it is challenging and costly to fabricate these types of cavities by conventional micro/nano fabrication techniques. In this study, a type of hydrophobic-hydrophilic composite interfaces were synthesized from functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes by introducing hydrophilic functional groups on the pristine multiwall carbon nanotubes. This type of carbon nanotube enabled hydrophobic-hydrophilic composite interfaces were systematically characterized. Ideal cavities created by the interfaces were experimentally demonstrated to be the primary reason to substantially enhance nucleate boiling

Surface Geometry And Heat Flux Effect On Thin Wire Nucleate Pool Boiling Of Subcooled Water In Microgravity, Troy Munro, Andrew Fassman Mar 2011

Surface Geometry And Heat Flux Effect On Thin Wire Nucleate Pool Boiling Of Subcooled Water In Microgravity, Troy Munro, Andrew Fassman

Presentations

The motivation of this nucleate boiling research is to understand the effects of surface geometry and heat flux as applied to a thin wire heater. This will further the understanding of the fundamental behaviors of boiling onset, steady state heat transfer, and bubble dynamics with respect to nucleate boiling with the goal of creating efficient thermal management systems for future space applications. Using three different thin platinum wire geometries and five different power levels, subcooled water was boiled over a period of approximately 30 seconds for 15 parabolic arcs to simulate microgravity. To represent the trends in bubbles behavior across …

Liquid Crystal Thermography Studies In Water Pool Boiling At Subatmospheric Pressures, Kiran Talari Jan 2007

Liquid Crystal Thermography Studies In Water Pool Boiling At Subatmospheric Pressures, Kiran Talari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A pool boiling experimental facility has been designed and built to investigate nucleate pool boiling in water under sub atmospheric pressure. Liquid crystal thermography, a non intrusive technique, is used for the determination of surface temperature distributions. This technique uses encapsulated liquid crystals that reflect definite colors at specific temperatures and viewing angle. Design of the test section is important in this experimental study. Since a new TLC is required for every new set of test conditions, a permanently sealed test section is not an option. The real challenge is to design a leak proof test section which is flexible …

Liquid Immersion Cooling Of A Longitudinal Array Of Discrete Heat Sources In Protruding Substrates: Ii—Forced Convection Boiling, Theodore J. Heindel, S. Ramadhyani, F. P. Incropera Mar 1992

Liquid Immersion Cooling Of A Longitudinal Array Of Discrete Heat Sources In Protruding Substrates: Ii—Forced Convection Boiling, Theodore J. Heindel, S. Ramadhyani, F. P. Incropera

Theodore J. Heindel

Forced convection boiling experiments have been performed for an in-line 1 x 10 array of discrete heat sources, flush mounted to protruding substrates located on the bottom wall of a horizontal flow channel. FC-72, a dielectric fluorocarbon liquid, was used as the heat transfer fluid, and the experiments covered a range of flow velocities, degrees of fluid subcooling, and channel heights. The maximum heater-to-heater surface temperature variation was less than 2.5°C and was insensitive to channel height under conditions of fully developed nucleate boiling. Although the fluid velocity influenced the heat flux for partially developed nucleate boiling, its influence was …
