Workforce Development Strategies In Additive Manufacturing, Mel Cossette, Ismail Fidan, Gaffar Gailani, Angran Xiao Jan 2022

Workforce Development Strategies In Additive Manufacturing, Mel Cossette, Ismail Fidan, Gaffar Gailani, Angran Xiao

Publications and Research

Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D Printing (3DP), is one of the newest manufacturing technologies with growing utilization in our daily life. Parallel to this growth, new materials, machines, and specific processes are being developed to produce parts in better-finished quality, at lower cost, and with shorter production time. However, workforce education in this evolving field has not advanced at the same pace as the technology, lacking proven curriculums, high-quality/accredited degree programs, and specialized advanced degrees. In this paper, some best practices established by the authors are introduced. The list is far from exhaustive but is proven to be …

Washing Technology For Medium And Highly Saline Soils, B.K. Saliev, M. S. Yuldashev, N.O. Shaimanov

Irrigation and Melioration

The article discusses the issues of conducting field experiments to assess the reclamation conditions of soils, which are a particular issue of managing salinity and water-salt regime, as well as increasing the efficiency of desalination. Today, 46.6% of the irrigated lands of the Republic of Uzbekistan have salinization of varying degrees, of which 30.9% are weak, 13.3% are moderate and 2.5% are highly saline. Medium and highly saline lands make up 15.8%. The essence of the proposed method of flushing from the traditional one is that in late autumn or winter, the collectors-ditches are closed, and the groundwater is artificially …

An Innovative Seeder For Sowing Non-Loose Seeds Of Saxaul And Cherkez, E.T. Farmonov Mar 2021

An Innovative Seeder For Sowing Non-Loose Seeds Of Saxaul And Cherkez, E.T. Farmonov

Irrigation and Melioration

The main reasons for the absence of a seeder for mechanized sowing of non-loose seeds of fodder plants in deserts are analyzed in the article. The author has developed a technology for sowing non-loose seeds (saxaul and cherkez), which prevents clogging, crushing and breakage in the seeder hopper, and provides for uniform and stable sowing at a set rate and shallow depth over the entire field area without reducing the biological germination. An innovative seeder with a universal sowing unit is recommended. Field tests of the innovative seeder with the proposed universal sowing unit were conducted in February 2020, as …

With the flagrant recognition of the coronavirus as one of those most impactful viruses in the history of the world, it is important to study how the effects of such a disease can create troublesome ripple effects in the world. Covid-19 has caused the death of hundreds of thousands of individuals and has negatively impacted the lives of American’s all across the country during the nationwide lockdown. Decreased work commuters, minimal road travel, and little need for car repairs hit the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company hard. The University of Akron has teamed up with Goodyear to explore such effects …

The Design, Fabrication, And Testing Of A Cooling Garment, Richard James Garza Dec 2020

The Design, Fabrication, And Testing Of A Cooling Garment, Richard James Garza

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this research is to design a device or technology capable of cooling the user – such as a college student walking to class, for example – in a manner as convenient as putting on a jacket. The idea is to use the peltier effect – a phenomenon in which two dissimilar semi-conductors heat up and cool down with the application of an electric current – as the source of heat absorption used to cool the user. In this research it will be determined whether or not it is feasible to use such a phenomenon to keep the …

The Relationship Of Corporate Financial Performance And Innovation Among Manufacturing Industries, Charlaine T. Chong, Samantha R. Chua, Ma. Catrina S. Dy, Antonio Miguel E. Villavicencio Jan 2016

The Relationship Of Corporate Financial Performance And Innovation Among Manufacturing Industries, Charlaine T. Chong, Samantha R. Chua, Ma. Catrina S. Dy, Antonio Miguel E. Villavicencio

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Innovation is becoming a critical determinant of the survival and advancement of firms. Despite this realization, there is a dearth of literature that tackles the subject matter and its specific role in corporate settings remains vague. Using corporate data on East and Southeast Asian manufacturing firms from 2008 to 2013, this study aims to identify the impact of corporate financial performance on research and development (R&D) expenditure as a measure of innovation. On the whole, the researchers utilized random effects (REM) and fixed effects (FEM) models to establish the relationship between R&D and corporate performance. The researchers, then, identified the …

Binding Innovation Technologies, Restoring Freedom To The World Of Snowboard Bindings, Matthew Lee Munsee May 2015

Binding Innovation Technologies, Restoring Freedom To The World Of Snowboard Bindings, Matthew Lee Munsee

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Snowboarding technology has progressed by leaps and bounds since the sport's inception in the 1980's. However, there is one area that has gotten progressively worse. That area is flexibility and freedom of expression. In order to make the sport safer, the industry responded by making stiffer boots and bindings. Our goal is to bring back the high level of flexibility that built the sport while maintaining or exceeding current safety standards. We also need to reduce heel side shock so as to increase the comfort of the rider. Our design consists of three major systems that drastically increase flexibility, safety, …

Integrated Sustainability Decision-Making Framework, Michael Paul Cole Jan 2014

Integrated Sustainability Decision-Making Framework, Michael Paul Cole

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Integrated Sustainability Decision-Making Framework (ISDMF) is an 'ideal case' framework developed at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) from 2012 to present to provide the most comprehensive and concise sustainability strategy and decision-making template available.

Sustainable decision-making improves community Quality of Life, but is often beyond the reach of the majority. A framework that is most approachable, actionable, and adoptable can accelerate convergence on and continued operation of a sustainable solution. Research confirms that published frameworks continuously emerge, and are infinite in number. Iterations benefit from prior work, and contribution occurs when an 'ideal case' is envisioned, best …

Innovation Skills For Tomorrow’S Sustainable Designers, Julie Linsey, Vimal Viswanathan Jan 2010

Innovation Skills For Tomorrow’S Sustainable Designers, Julie Linsey, Vimal Viswanathan

Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering

Tomorrow’s sustainable designers will need an arsenal of tools for innovation. An approach for teaching design methods and innovation is described. A new approach for teaching design methods based on the use of analogous products to provide concrete experiences prior to the method’s application to a novel design problem was evaluated. Students’ opinions of the various design methods and their perceptions of the class’s influence on their creativity were also measured. Past experiments have shown that the presentation of example solutions has the potential to cause design fixation thus limiting the design solutions considered. Due to this, the teams’ final …

A Product Architecture-Based Conceptual Dfa Technique, Robert B. Stone, Daniel A. Mcadams, Varghese J. Kayyalethekkel

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A conceptual design for assembly (DFA) method is introduced in this paper. The method incorporates DFA analysis into the conceptual design phase. Current DFA methods, essentially all of which are post-design DFA analyses, are reviewed with emphasis on the popular Boothroyd and Dewhurst method. The product architecture-based conceptual DFA method developed and presented in this article uses two relatively new concepts: the functional basis and the method of module heuristics. The functional basis is used to derive a functional model of a product in a standard language and the module heuristics are applied to the functional model to identify a …
