The increased lethality of recently fielded projectiles mandates a proportional escalation in armor performance. Recent advancements in ceramic technologies have allowed designers to incorporate harder but more brittle materials into hard armor designs to defeat yet more capable penetrating projectiles. Ceramics suffer from the feature of shattering, however, even when impacted by threats below their design parameters. While this shattering mechanism is used effectively to dissipate energy from high-energy rifle projectiles, it is wasted on low-energy projectiles, and can result in easily damaged lifesaving gear, both of which are undesirable in combat. Strain hardening and associated deformation mechanisms play a determining role in the performance of metallic materials. The objective of the doctoral research was to explore and fundamentally understand the strain hardening mechanisms in the next generation of advanced engineering steels. Two main work hardening mechanisms, notably, twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP)) were identified that governed strength and ductility. In the nanograined austenitic steel with high strength-high ductility combination, processed by the novel phase reversion concept, twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) was the governing deformation mechanism and contributed to good ductility. Hot stamping is part of a specific type of metalworking procedure widely used in the automotive industry. This research seeks to help make hot stamp tooling component production more cost-effective by using large-scale additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing can produce dissimilar steel components that can be more cost-effective and time-efficient and allow for complex geometries to be made. A dissimilar steel system consisting of 410 martensitic stainless steel and AWS ER70S-6 mild steel is proposed to make hot stamps, making them more cost-efficient. Nickel-Tungsten (Ni-W) coatings via the pulse reverse current method have been under development as a potential replacement for typical Chromium/Cadmium coatings. To increase the effectiveness of Ni-W as a coating, dopants have been tested to decrease microcracks and pores and increase overall tribological performance. Previous research by Timken Engineered Surfaces Laboratory showed that Ni-W doped with TiO2 nanoparticles had a positive effect on coating performance. Every year AISC runs a regional and national steel bridge competition. The competition offers a chance for civil engineering students to gain valuable experience designing a bridge. In addition to this, mechanical engineering students are provided the opportunity to practice machining steel parts. For the competition, teams from participating schools are given a scenario with certain constraints to design a bridge for. At the competition, the bridges are ranked based on weight, structural efficiency, construction economy, assembly speed, deflection, aesthetics, and overall performance.

Effects of zinc-coated steel type and steel surface sandblasting pretreatment in the solid-liquid compound casting of layered type steel/aluminum bimetals were investigated. The Zn coating behavior and its effects on interfacial microstructure evolution and fracture mechanism were also discussed. The aluminum fluidity in thin plate type flow channels formed by the steel insert and the mold wall primarily depended on the insert surface roughness and secondarily on the wettability. As-galvanized (GI) steel/aluminum bimetal joints showed the bonding strength of 20 MPa and more, while galvannealed (GA) steels showed poor bonding. The specific strength of lightweight lattice structures built with SLM is of interest to the aerospace industry. Honeycombs were manufactured with increasing wall thicknesses (which increases density) and tested under compression. The optimal strength to density ratio was determined from the resulting data. The build quality was also evaluated to determine how/if the results were influenced by the specimen quality. Differences between the nominal and as-built geometry were identified, but considered to be minimal. Advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have high susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement, and are often exposed to hydrogen environments in processing. In order to study the embrittlement and recovery of steel, tensile tests were conducted on two different types of AHSS over time after hydrogen charging. Concentration measurements and hydrogen microprinting were carried out at the same time steps to visualize the hydrogen behavior during recovery. The diffusible hydrogen concentration was found to decay exponentially, and equations were found for the two types of steel. Hydrogen concentration decay rates were calculated to be -0.355 /hr in TBF steel, and -0.225 /hr …

This thesis presents the study of fatigue crack propagation in a low carbon steel (ASTM A36) and two different weld metals (AWS A5.18 and AWS A5.28). Fatigue crack propagation data for each weld wire is of interest because of its use for predicting and analyzing service failures. Fatigue crack growth test specimens were developed and fabricated for the low carbon steel base metal and for each weld wire. Weld specimens were stress relieved prior to fatigue testing. The aim of this study was to develop intumescent flame-retardant coatings that incorporate chicken eggshell (CES) waste as a novel eco-friendly bio-filler. Three flame-retardant additives, namely, ammonium polyphosphate phase II, pentaerythritol and melamine were mixed with flame-retardant fillers and acrylic binder to synthesize the intumescent coatings. The fire performance of the coatings was evaluated in accordance with 'BS 476: Part 6-Fire Propagation' and 'BS 476: Part 7-Surface Spread of Flame' test standards. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is being used for numerous applications: from consumer hobbies to the development of aircraft parts. However, inexpensive 3D printers have been constrained in material selection to plastic. These printer use the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method of printing, which is a relatively new technology that utilizes computer numerical control (CNC) techniques to deposit melted material at specific places. In this paper, the effects of process parameters, such as the tool rotational and traverse speeds, on temperature evolution and the microstructural and mechanical properties of dissimilar friction stir welding between 3 mm thick AA 7075 aluminum alloy and polycarbonate (PC) plates were investigated. The tool rotational and traverse speeds were varied from 3 000 to 3 500 rpm and 50 to 150 mm min(-1), respectively. The joint fabricated at 3 250 rpm and 100 mm min(-1) yielded a highest tensile load of 586 N. Surface roughness and cutting force are two key measures that describe machined surface integrity and power requirement evaluation, respectively. This investigation presents the effect of melt treatment with addition of bismuth and antimony on machinability when turning Al-11% Si-2% Cu alloy. The experiments are carried out under oblique dry cutting conditions using a PVD TIN-coated insert at three cutting speeds of 70, 130 and 250 m/min, feed rates of 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 mm/rev, and 0.05 mm constant depth of cut. A combination of acrylic binder and flame-retardant ingredients was used to synthesize the solvent-borne intumescent coatings designed for steel substrates. The influences of individual and various combinations of flame-retardant fillers on the fire protection and mechanical properties of the coatings were characterized by using Bunsen burner, thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index, field emission scanning electron microscopy, freeze thaw cycles, static immersion and pull-off type equipment. It was found that the combination of aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)(3)) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) has significantly improved the fire protection, thermal stability and water resistance of the coating. High velocity projectiles cause severe damage to target materials upon impact. The target material is subject to high pressure and temperature over a very short period of time. This work studies the effects of Lexan projectiles impacting A36 steel at velocities between 3 km/sec and 6 km/sec. The damage zone develops in the target within 5 microseconds. Some steel materials go through a reversible phase change when subject to elevated temperature and high quasi-static pressure. In the casting process, regions of shrinkage porosity can be reduced or eliminated through the implementation of taper, or small angled additions of mass on the boundaries of the part design, before risers are placed on the casting. Taper supplements the effect of risers so that a smaller riser volume is necessary to make a casting sound. Typically, taper is determined for a casting by using industry guidelines that were developed for simple two-dimensional simplifications of a complex casting. The development and example applications of a new EBSD-based texture analysis system are presented. This new system uses the cross-correlation function to compare two EBSD patterns at a number of corresponding regions in each pattern to calculate the deformation gradient tensor. Bragg's Law-based simulated EBSD patterns are used as reference patterns in the cross-correlation method to enable the measurements of absolute elastic strain and lattice orientation at discrete points in a crystalline sample. Fe-0.96mass%C and Fe-15.4mass%Ni-0.70mass%C alloys with hardness of 810 and 750 HV respectively have been electrodeposited at 50°C from sulphate based baths containing a small amount of citric acid and L-ascorbic acid. Differential scanning calorimetry of the electrodeposited samples has been carried out in the temperature range of 293-725 K in argon atmosphere. Electrodeposited pure Fe is also investigated for comparison purposes. The DSC curves of both alloys contain two exothermic peaks: at about 411 K and 646 K for the Fe-C alloy, and 388 K and 639 K for the Fe-Ni-C alloy. These peaks are irreversible and do not appear …

The effects of mechanical factors viz. applied load and temperature on the tribological performance of 5% palm oil methyl ester (POME) blended lubricant were studied using a steel-cast iron pair. Wear and frictional measurements were made using a stationary steel ball and a reciprocating cast iron plate in a modified universal wear and friction testing machine. The test conditions were contact pressure, 400 MPa; mean contact velocity, 0.34 m/s; reciprocating stroke, 80 mm; loads, 100-1100 N (fixed temperature); and temperature, 40-140°C (fixed load).
