Baja Sae Ecvt Mechanical Design, Tyler Lee Connel, Will Daniel Antes, Matt Stephen Balboni, Benjamin James Colard, Julian Edward Finburgh

Mechanical Engineering

This objective of this project was to design, manufacture, and test the mechanical systems of an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) for the Cal Poly Baja SAE vehicle.

Steering System For Sae Baja, Dallin Colgrove Mar 2019

Steering System For Sae Baja, Dallin Colgrove

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis is to study the different types of steering geometry for the BYU Baja vehicle. The main steering geometries of study are Ackermann and parallel steering geometries. Ackermann steering geometry is ideal for low speed turns. During low speed turns Ackermann steering performs better than parallel steering due to a smaller radius of turn. Parallel steering ideally is better for high speed turns, because with parallel steering the slip angle is smaller than that of Ackermann geometry. A recommendation is made to the BYU Baja team to use Ackermann steering, but still do some more analysis of parallel steering …

Implementation Of Augmented Reality In Sae Mini Baja, Brady S. Hales Mar 2019

Implementation Of Augmented Reality In Sae Mini Baja, Brady S. Hales

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Engineers often encounter difficulties in connecting digital data with its physical counterpart. This applies to processing and interpreting data as well as effectively communicating design ideas and considerations. Augmented reality has the ability to solve these problems by overlaying digital data on a physical object. This allows engineers to further explore design considerations such as ergonomics as well as communicate data such as, Finite Element Analysis. This communication may be realized in discussing and collaborating with colleagues, as well as to judges in design reviews. Augmented reality is beneficial in these cases and is further explored in this thesis, utilizing …

Torsional Stiffness Of A Race Car, Reiley A. Schraeger, Cameron Kao, Raymond Deng, Omar Roman Mar 2019

Torsional Stiffness Of A Race Car, Reiley A. Schraeger, Cameron Kao, Raymond Deng, Omar Roman

Mechanical Engineering

Torsional stiffness plays a major role in any road vehicle. To understand torsional stiffness of a vehicle and make future iterations and improvements, a proper torsional stiffness jig is required to prove accurate and useful data. This report encompasses the new and improved testing jig and potential improvement ideas for more accurate results. With real data result relating to FEA calculations, designers can be confident in the FEA changes to torsional stiffness is accurate and will yield the probably results they desired. This report shows the methodology, manufacturing process and testing procedure to use on any Baja or SAE vehicle …

Sae Baja Custom Caliper And Upright Design, Katelynn R. Kise Jan 2019

Sae Baja Custom Caliper And Upright Design, Katelynn R. Kise

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Zips Baja Off-Road Racing team had a successful 2018 season however some aspects of the car needed to be updated and improved for the 2019 season. This reports captures the design cycle performed to improve the cost, integration, and reliability of the front braking caliper and upright.

Baja Rack And Pinion, Devin Jackson Jan 2019

Baja Rack And Pinion, Devin Jackson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Our senior design team chose to team up with The University of Akron’s SAE Zips Baja Team. The Zips Baja Team races off-road vehicles that they build every year. The team is trying to optimize and improve several sub categories for the 2019 car such as steering, drivetrain and suspension. Our design team met with a couple of the captains on the Zips Baja Team and were given a few choices of what sub category we could focus on for our project. We decided to take on the task of improving the vehicle steering rack and pinion gear system. The …
