This work investigates the uncertainties in reaction rates of an n-dodecane model on turbulent spray combustion simulations. Six major reactions were found to significantly impact the ignition delay of the mechanism in a 0-D batch reactor model. These reactions’ rates were independently modified and placed into individual mechanisms. These newly developed mechanisms were simulated in a 3-D turbulent spray simulation and a 0-D batch reactor at a pressure of 60 bar and temperatures from 900 to 1100 K. Turbulent spray combustion of n-dodecane was modeled at engine relevant conditions using various combustion models (Direct Integration of Chemistry and Flamelet Generated Manifolds) and turbulence models (Dynamic Structure Large Eddy Simulation and RNG Reynolds-Averaged Naiver-Stokes). A recently developed n-dodecane mechanism was utilized and the turbulent spray was simulated at various combustion chamber initial gas temperature and pressure conditions. Mesh with size of 31 microns was utilized to resolve small eddies around the spray. The objective of the research into modeling and simulation was to provide an iterative improvement to the Wayne State EcoCAR 2 team's math-based design tools for use in evaluating different outcomes based on hybrid powertrain architecture tweaks, controls code development and testing. Low temperature combustion (LTC) modes of operating internal combustion engines are of great interest for their potential to achieve high thermal efficiencies while maintaining low nitrogen oxide (NOX) and particulate matter emissions below levels requiring costly after-treatment systems. In this study the mechanical and electrochemical response of a sandwich composite comprising of carbon fiber fabric skin and aluminum foam core was evaluated. The three point flexural test was chosen to investigate the mechanical behavior in terms of finding the deformation and failure behavior. The flexural test exhibited an excellent bond between the skin and the core. The specimens mainly failed in three different modes - indentation, core shear and face yielding and showed three distinct regions: a linear rise in load with displacement region, a rapid load drop region and a plateau region followed by a densification region. …

This dissertation presents innovate methodologies for locating, extracting, and separating multiple incoherent sound sources in three-dimensional (3D) space; and applications of the time reversal (TR) algorithm to pinpoint the hyper active neural activities inside the brain auditory structure that are correlated to the tinnitus pathology. Specifically, an acoustic modeling based method is developed for locating arbitrary and incoherent sound sources in 3D space in real time by using a minimal number of microphones, and the Point Source Separation (PSS) method is developed for extracting target signals from directly measured mixed signals. This study involves the cold start testing of ULSD and JP8 fuels on the 6 cylinder 7.2 liter turbocharged diesel engine at various ambient temperatures as low as 0oF for JP8 fuel and 10oF for ULSD fuel. Cycle by cycle analysis of the cold start transient data, along with the effects of variation in ambient temperature on the engine cranking speed and in cylinder motoring pressure were analyzed and presented. It was found that the reduction in ambient temperature resulted in prolonged cranking periods along with the longer time taken to reach idling speed as well as increased combustion instability. …

defects of different geometries by studying their effects on rim stress concentration and
load redistribution in the human knee.
Methods: Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric knees were mounted at 30° of flexion in a materials
testing machine. Digital electronic pressure sensors were placed in the medial and lateral
compartments of the knee. Dynamic pressure readings were recorded throughout the

A novel image processing platform is developed in this thesis for pre-processing the images of two-phase microstructures containing isolated particles based on Matlab®. The two phases in this work represent martensite particles and ferrite matrix in Dual Phase steels that are developed for lightweight automotive body structures. An automated image processing tool is useful for obtaining statistical microstructure characteristics, important for better understanding material's deformation and fracture behavior.
