Nondestructive Damage Detection And Stress Corrosion Crack Mitigation In Stainless Steel Plates, Andrew Philip Campbell Apr 2023

Nondestructive Damage Detection And Stress Corrosion Crack Mitigation In Stainless Steel Plates, Andrew Philip Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to inspect and detect damage within a structure without permanent damage has broad appeal in a range of engineering applications from aerospace structures to nuclear facilities. Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) using guided ultrasonic Lamb waves has growing potential and popularity in these fields. Lamb waves are known for being sensitive to material properties and various defects across the thickness such as cracks in metallic structures and delamination or debonding in composite structures. Research has also been done on the development of fully non-contact system that generates and detects Lamb waves, particularly focused on the use of pulsed laser for …

Design Of Bio-Inspired Multifrequency Acoustic Sensors And Metamaterial Energy Harvesting Smart Structures, Mohammadsadegh Saadatzi Apr 2020

Design Of Bio-Inspired Multifrequency Acoustic Sensors And Metamaterial Energy Harvesting Smart Structures, Mohammadsadegh Saadatzi

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the limited availability and high depletion rates of nonrenewable sources of energy as well as environmental concerns, the scientific community has started to explore many alternative clean sources of energies. It is identified that civil, mechanical and Aerospace structures are always subjected to acoustic noises and vibration which could potentially be used as renewable source of energy. Roads and Industrial noise barriers are used inside industrial facilities alongside the walls, around construction pillars, nearby machinery and other equipment to separate quite work zones, protect walls, deliver extra safety and precautions while diminish sound and vibrational pressure. We hypothesized …

Ultrasonics Transduction In Metallic And Composite Structures For Structural Health Monitoring Using Extensional And Shear Horizontal Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors, Ayman Kamal Abdelrahman Aug 2014

Ultrasonics Transduction In Metallic And Composite Structures For Structural Health Monitoring Using Extensional And Shear Horizontal Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors, Ayman Kamal Abdelrahman

Theses and Dissertations

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for monitoring structures performance, detecting the initiation of flaws and damages, and predicting structural life span. The dissertation emphasizes on developing analytical and numerical models for ultrasonics transduction between piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS), and metallic and composite structures.

The first objective of this research is studying the power and energy transduction between PWAS and structure for the aim of optimizing guided waves mode tuning and PWAS electromechanical (E/M) impedance for power-efficient SHM systems. Analytical models for power and energy were developed based on exact Lamb wave solution with application on multimodal Lamb wave …
