The Effect Of Cutting Edge Geometry, Nose Radius And Feed On Surface Integrity In Finish Turning Of Ti-6al4v, Ian S. Brown, Julius M. Schoop

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

While the respective effects of nose radius, feed and cutting edge geometry on surface integrity have each been studied at depth, coupling between these effects is not yet sufficiently understood. Recent studies have clearly established that cutting edge micro-geometries may not only have positive effects on tool-life, but can also be used to tailor surface integrity characteristics, such as surface roughness and near-surface severe plastic deformation. To further a more fundamental understanding of the effects of cutting edge micro-geometries on surface integrity, experimental turning data was generated for a varied range of cutting tool geometries and feeds. Scanning laser interferometry …

Analysis Of Surface Integrity In Machining Of Aisi 304 Stainless Steel Under Various Cooling And Cutting Conditions, F. Klocke, B. Döbbeler, S. Lung, S. Seelbach, Ibrahim S. Jawahir May 2018

Analysis Of Surface Integrity In Machining Of Aisi 304 Stainless Steel Under Various Cooling And Cutting Conditions, F. Klocke, B. Döbbeler, S. Lung, S. Seelbach, Ibrahim S. Jawahir

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

Recent studies have shown that machining under specific cooling and cutting conditions can be used to induce a nanocrystalline surface layer in the workspiece. This layer has beneficial properties, such as improved fatigue strength, wear resistance and tribological behavior. In machining, a promising approach for achieving grain refinement in the surface layer is the application of cryogenic cooling. The aim is to use the last step of the machining operation to induce the desired surface quality to save time-consuming and expensive post machining surface treatments. The material used in this study was AISI 304 stainless steel. This austenitic steel suffers …

Apparatus And Method Of High-Pressure Waterjet Assisted Cooling/Lubrication In Machining, Radovan Kovacevic Feb 1994

Apparatus And Method Of High-Pressure Waterjet Assisted Cooling/Lubrication In Machining, Radovan Kovacevic

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Patents

An apparatus for high-pressure waterjet assisted machining includes a drive motor, spindle and rotary cutting tool with cutting inserts. The apparatus further includes a high-pressure intensifier pump providing cutting fluid at a pressure greater than 50,000 psi. A cutting fluid conduit system in the rotary cutting tool includes a main flow channel, a distribution manifold, a plurality of radially extending feed channels and a plurality of cooperating nozzles for delivering fluid behind the cutting inserts. The cutting fluid then passes through one or more apertures in the inserts into an interface defined by the inserts of the cutting tool and …
