Implementation Of Machine Learning Algorithms For Prediction Of Fluidelastic Instability In Tube Arrays, Joaquin Moran, Yasser Selima

Publications and Scholarship

Fluidelastic instability (FEI) in tube arrays has been studied extensively experimentally and theoretically for the last 50 years, due to its potential to cause significant damage in short periods. Incidents similar to those observed at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station indicate that the problem is not yet fully understood, probably due to the large number of factors affecting the phenomenon. In this study, a new approach for the analysis and interpretation of FEI data using machine learning (ML) algorithms is explored. FEI data for both single and two-phase flows have been collected from the literature and utilized for training a …

Framework For An Integrated Learning Block With Cdio-Led Engineering Education, Mouhamed Abdulla, Meagan Troop, Amjed Majeed Jun 2020

Framework For An Integrated Learning Block With Cdio-Led Engineering Education, Mouhamed Abdulla, Meagan Troop, Amjed Majeed

Publications and Scholarship

As a CDIO collaborating member, Sheridan’s School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology (MEET) maintains a curriculum that is deeply rooted in skills-based learning, experiential learning, and engineering design. To ensure our graduates are consistently agile and ready for the workforce, we are taking proactive measures to further improve their learningexperiences. An important challenge still impedingour students’knowledge acquisition is the perception that program courses have disjointed learning outcomes. In reality, the course map of programs is carefully designed in such a way that technical skills acquired in particular courses gradually build on each other. Despite the traditional existence of prerequisites …

5 Stage Reverse Osmosis Pedal Powered Water Pump Purification System

This report provides the details of an engineering design project undertaken by Mechanical Engineering Design and Drafting Technology students at the Sheridan College. The goal of this project is to design a water pump / purification system driven by the pedal power for the Worldskills 2017 IMM Competition. The design must be portable, easy to assemble and lightweight. A recumbent bicycle was designed at 60° due to its efficiency compared with traditional bicycle. An transmission system which included a gear box, couplings, shafts and pedals was designed in order to have output of 80rpm. The ratio of the gear box …

Multi-Objective Optimization Of Wind Farm Layouts Under Energy Generation And Noise Propagation, Cristina Amon, Wing Yin Kwong, Joaquin Moran, Michael Morgenroth, David Romeo, Peter Y. Zhang Oct 2012

Multi-Objective Optimization Of Wind Farm Layouts Under Energy Generation And Noise Propagation, Cristina Amon, Wing Yin Kwong, Joaquin Moran, Michael Morgenroth, David Romeo, Peter Y. Zhang

Publications and Scholarship

Wind farm design deals with the optimal placement of turbines in a wind farm. Past studies have focused on energymaximization, cost-minimization or revenue-maximization objectives. As land is more extensively exploited for onshore wind farms, wind farms are more likely to be in close proximity with human dwellings. Therefore governments, developers, and landowners have to be aware of wind farms’ environmental impacts. After considering land constraints due to environmental features, noise generation remains the main environmental/health concern for wind farm design. Therefore, noise generation is sometimes included in optimization models as a constraint. Here we present continuous-location models for layout optimization …

Computer Model To Predict Drillstring Lateral Vibration Modes And Frequencies Using The Finite-Element-Method And Modal Analysis, David Bukowitz, Rafael Bravo, Joaquin Moran Aug 2008

Computer Model To Predict Drillstring Lateral Vibration Modes And Frequencies Using The Finite-Element-Method And Modal Analysis, David Bukowitz, Rafael Bravo, Joaquin Moran

Publications and Scholarship

A computer program based on the finite element method was developed to predict the lateral vibra- tion modes and frequencies in the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) of a drillstring. This model is applicable in both a planning and a real time mode of operation to avoid resonance problems. The analysis used in this model proceeds in two stages. The first stage solves the two-dimensional nonlinear static deformation of the drillstring; this gives the deformed shape of the BHA and the side forces at points where the BHA touches the wellbore wall. In this way, the length of the BHA that …

Damping And Fluidelastic Instability In Two-Phase Cross-Flow Heat Exchanger Tube Arrays, Joaquin Moran Nov 2007

Damping And Fluidelastic Instability In Two-Phase Cross-Flow Heat Exchanger Tube Arrays, Joaquin Moran

Publications and Scholarship

An experimental study was conducted to investigate damping and fluidelastic instability in tube arrays subjected to two-phase cross-flow. The purpose of this research was to improve our understanding of these phenomena and how they are affected by void fraction and flow regime. The model tube bundle had 10 cantilevered tubes in a parallel-triangular configuration, with a pitch ratio of 1.49. The two-phase flow loop used in this research utilized Refrigerant 11 as the working fluid, which better models steam-water than air-water mixtures in terms of vapour-liquid mass ratio as well as permitting phase changes due to pressure fluctuations. The void …

On Damping And Fluidelastic Instability In A Tube Bundle Subjected To Two-Phase Cross-Flow, Joaquin Moran, David S. Weaver

Publications and Scholarship

An experimental study was conducted to investigate damping and uidelastic instability in tube arrays subjected to twophase cross-ow. The purpose of this research was to improve our understanding of these phenomena and how they are affected by void fraction and ow regime. The working uid used was Freon 11, which better models steam-water than air-water mixtures in terms of vapour-liquid mass ratio as well as permitting phase changes due to pressure uctuations. The damping measurements were obtained by plucking the monitored tube from outside the test section using electromagnets. An exponential function was tted to the tube decay trace, producing …

Damping Measurements In Tube Bundles Subjected To Two-Phase Cross Flow, Joaquin Moran, David S. Weaver Jan 2006

Damping Measurements In Tube Bundles Subjected To Two-Phase Cross Flow, Joaquin Moran, David S. Weaver

Publications and Scholarship

An experimental study was conducted to investigate twophase damping in tube arrays. The objective was to compare different measurement methodologies in order to obtain a more reliable damping estimate. This will allow for improved guidelines related to failures due to fluidelastic instability in tube bundles. The methods compared were the traditionally used halfpower bandwidth, the logarithmic decrement and an exponential fitting to the tube decay response. The working fluid used was Refrigerant 11 (Freon), which better models the real steamwater problem, as it allows for phase change. The void fraction was measured using a gamma densitometer, introducing an improvement over …

Implementation Of The Compressible Flow Solution Methodology For Solving 2d Shallow-Water Flow Problems, Joaquin Moran, Jose A. Rincon Nov 2001

Implementation Of The Compressible Flow Solution Methodology For Solving 2d Shallow-Water Flow Problems, Joaquin Moran, Jose A. Rincon

Publications and Scholarship

This paper concerns with the implementation of the compressible flow solution methodology for solving 2D shallow water flow problems. It is well known that in both cases, the continuity and momentum conservation equations look quite similar, but depth replaces density of compressible flow, and the Froude number will replace the Maeh number. Thus, any mass imbalance produces a change in depth equivalent to the density change for compressible flow. It is possible to combine momentum and continuity equations to obtain a predictor-corrector algorithm for establishing the depth field. However, as the Froude number increases, the governing equations change their character …
