Mathematical Formulations For Complex Resource Scheduling Problems., T. R. Lalita Dr. Jan 2022

Mathematical Formulations For Complex Resource Scheduling Problems., T. R. Lalita Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis deals with development of effective models for large scale real-world resource scheduling problems. Efficient utilization of resources is crucial for any organization or industry as resources are often scarce. Scheduling them in an optimal way can not only take care of the scarcity but has potential economic benefits. Optimal utilization of resources reduces costs and thereby provides a competitive edge in the business world. Resources can be of different types such as human (personnel-skilled and unskilled), financial(budgets), materials, infrastructures(airports and seaports with designed facilities, windmills, warehouses’ area, hotel rooms etc) and equipment (microprocessors, cranes, machinery, aircraft simulators for …

Optimal Summer Camp Layout, Anthony Bonifonte

Honors Papers

Convex optimization is an important branch of operations research. It generalizes linear programming and offers powerful tools for modelling problems and discovering optimal solutions to real world problems. Mathematically it is an interesting topic because it ties together many branches: linear algebra, multivariable calculus, and numerical analysis, to name a few. Modelling a problem as a convex optimization problem can be challenging but offers many benefits. Algorithm design is critically important to ensure precision of solutions that solve with minimal computation power. From an engineering perspective it is also incredibly useful, since many more situations can be modeled than with …

Optimal Path Planning And The Fast Marching Method, J. J. Clark Aug 2002

Optimal Path Planning And The Fast Marching Method, J. J. Clark

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The problem of determining an optimal path for an object moving through some obstacle space presents several nontrivial subproblems. The foremost being the computational complexity that is involved and how to best deal with the associated large data volume. For example, a non-symmetric object moving in three dimensions possesses six degrees of freedom. This can lead to a computational grid that may easily be on the order of 1012. Furthermore, for every point in the computational domain, several complex calculations must be performed. These include performing tests to determine if the object and obstacles intersect, and numerically solving …

Employement Fluctuations In Rural India:A Statistical Analysis With Special Reference To Maharsatra., Kaushik Bhattacharya Dr. Feb 1996

Employement Fluctuations In Rural India:A Statistical Analysis With Special Reference To Maharsatra., Kaushik Bhattacharya Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation attempts to find out the nature and the extent of employment fluctuation in rural India. The dissertation is partly theoretical and partly empirical in nature. On the methodological side, it builds up a consistent analytical frame- work. Employment fluctuation is measured in terms of a new mobility measure proposed in this dissertation. The empirical work is basod on the data collected by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), Government of India, in their 38-th round survey operation. I, therefore, thank NSSO for allowing me to work with the data. The views expressod in this dissertation or the errors …

Planning For Basic Needs In India: A Supplement., Monoj Kumar Panda Dr. May 1992

Planning For Basic Needs In India: A Supplement., Monoj Kumar Panda Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Problems of economic development have received a great deal of attention in the last four decades. This has led to the evolution of several development goals like growth, redistribution, poverty alleviation and basic needs satiafac- tion. Initially, development atrategies e eared to were achieve maximum feasible growth rates. It was generally felt that the benefits of growth would spread widely to different sections of the population and in particular would percolate to the lower income groups. Judged by growth in national income, the development efforts have been successful, though to varying ext ent in different countries. But the percola- tion …

Planning And Resource Mobilization In A Developing Economy., Dilip Ratha Dr. Feb 1991

Planning And Resource Mobilization In A Developing Economy., Dilip Ratha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In developing economies, the per capita availability of essential goods and services is quite low. Hence a large section of the society cannot afford even the mininum necessities of 1ite. While human and natural resources are plenty, produced means of produetion like plant and equipment and construction materiais are soaroe. Hence the human resources are not fully utilized. Since the distribution of income and assets is highly skewed, even the snall quantity of essential goods and services is not equitably distributed. When resources 11ke land and capital are privately owned and goods and services are distributed through the narket mechanism, …

Disparities In Development: A Case Study Of Karnataka State (India)., Jayalaxmi Jayaram Dr. Feb 1990

Disparities In Development: A Case Study Of Karnataka State (India)., Jayalaxmi Jayaram Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The Five Year Plans have recognised the need to bridge the developmental disparities across the regions and have formulated strategies for accelerated development of backward are as. However, the widening disparities between a few highly developed centres and vast areas of under development only bring out the inadequacies of the plans which are yet to integrate the resources of a region to its people. This study is an attempt to understand the spatial processes and patterns of development which offer an explanation to the intra/inter-regional contrasts in development. The study while high-lighting the importance of the Spatial approach has, in …

An Analysis Of Spatial Patterns And Growth Of Indian Agricultural Activities., Rabindranath Mukhopadhyay Dr. Feb 1989

An Analysis Of Spatial Patterns And Growth Of Indian Agricultural Activities., Rabindranath Mukhopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The main objective of this dissertation has been an empirical identification and evaluation of the regional variations in the pattern and growth of agricultural activities in India during the period 1960-61 to 1980-81, with appropriate use of some of the advanced quantitative methods and statistical tools developed recently in the field of Regional Insolent and Planning. During the period under consideration, the over all national agricultural presumptions have greatly been improved, eliminating India;s dependence on food grain imports, through certain intense-fiction measures initiated at the beginning of the period. But the pursuance of overall growth efforts has not been interwoven …

Multisectoral Model Of Income Distribution Poverty And Growth:Some Policy Exercies For Indian Economy., Debdas Bandyopadhyay Dr. Feb 1987

Multisectoral Model Of Income Distribution Poverty And Growth:Some Policy Exercies For Indian Economy., Debdas Bandyopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The extent of poverty in any country depends upon two factors vlz, the average level of income anxd the degree of inequality in its distribution. The central theme in the continuing debate on the relationship between growth and poverty is whether past growth process in the developing countries has caused any signi.licant benefit to the poor. Kuznets (1955) was first to observe from cross country data that procosa of development is likely to be accompanied by increase in inequality, whhich would reverse itself only at a relatively advanced stage. This hypothesis has been subsequently confirned to some extent by several …

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr. Aug 1984

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Manohar athanna is one of the remotest parts of Jhalawar District (Rajasthan, India). In the month of June it offers a striking contrast of scenic beauty and economic destitution. Agricultural activity is at a virtual standstill. The soil is very arid, irrigation practically non-existent, and by then the villagers (many of them tribals) have resolved to wait upon the good will of the rain gods.. Hence they have very little to do, or at least so they believe. Some gather wood to sell it in Manohar, walking miles under the scorching sun for a meagre reward, and adding slowly but …
