Universal Localizations Of Certain Noncommutative Rings, Tyler B. Bowles Aug 2020

Universal Localizations Of Certain Noncommutative Rings, Tyler B. Bowles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A common theme throughout algebra is the extension of arithmetic systems to ones over which new equations can be solved. For instance, someone who knows only positive numbers might think that there is no solution to x + 3 = 0, yet later learns x = -3 to be a feasible solution. Likewise, when faced with the equation 2x = 3, someone familiar only with integers may declare that there is no solution, but may later learn that x = 3/2 is a reasonable answer. Many eventually learn that the extension of real numbers to complex numbers unlocks solutions …

An Analysis And Comparison Of Knot Polynomials, Hannah Steinhauer May 2020

An Analysis And Comparison Of Knot Polynomials, Hannah Steinhauer

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Knot polynomials are polynomial equations that are assigned to knot projections based on the mathematical properties of the knots. They are also invariants, or properties of knots that do not change under ambient isotopy. In other words, given an invariant α for a knot K, α is the same for any projection of K. We will define these knot polynomials and explain the processes by which one finds them for a given knot projection. We will also compare the relative usefulness of these polynomials.

Higher Chow Cycles On The Jacobian Of Curves., Subham Sarkar Dr. Mar 2020

Higher Chow Cycles On The Jacobian Of Curves., Subham Sarkar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The following formula, usually called Beilinson’s formula — though independently due to Deligne as well — describes the motivic cohomology group of a smooth projective variety X over a number field as the group of extensions in a conjectured abelian category of mixed motives, MMQ.The aim of this thesis is to describe this construction in the case of the motivic cohomology group of the Jacobian of a curve. The first work in this direction is due to Harris [Har83] and Pulte [Pul88], [Hai87]. They showed that the Abel-Jacobi image of the modified diagonal cycle on the triple product of a …

Classification Of The Subalgebras Of The Algebra Of All 2 By 2 Matrices, Justin Luis Bernal Jan 2020

Classification Of The Subalgebras Of The Algebra Of All 2 By 2 Matrices, Justin Luis Bernal

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Classification of the subalgebras of the familiar algebra of all $n\times n$ real matrices over the real numbers can get quite unwieldy as all subalgebras are of dimension ranging from $1$ to $n^2$. Classification of the subalgebras of the algebra of all $2\times 2$ real matrices over the real numbers is an interesting first start.

Since $\2$ is of dimension $4$ then its possible subalgebras are of dimension $1, 2, 3,$ or $4$. The one-dimensional subalgebra and four-dimensional subalgebra need little to no attention. The two-dimensional and three-dimensional subalgebras however turn out to be of significance.

It turns out there …

On The Mysteries Of Interpolation Jack Polynomials, Havi Ellers Jan 2020

On The Mysteries Of Interpolation Jack Polynomials, Havi Ellers

HMC Senior Theses

Interpolation Jack polynomials are certain symmetric polynomials in N variables with coefficients that are rational functions in another parameter k, indexed by partitions of length at most N. Introduced first in 1996 by F. Knop and S. Sahi, and later studied extensively by Sahi, Knop-Sahi, and Okounkov-Olshanski, they have interesting connections to the representation theory of Lie algebras. Given an interpolation Jack polynomial we would like to differentiate it with respect to the variable k and write the result as a linear combination of other interpolation Jack polynomials where the coefficients are again rational functions in k. In this …

Periodic Points On Tori: Vanishing And Realizability, Shane Clark Jan 2020

Periodic Points On Tori: Vanishing And Realizability, Shane Clark

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Let $X$ be a finite simplicial complex and $f\colon X \to X$ be a continuous map. A point $x\in X$ is a fixed point if $f(x)=x$. Classically fixed point theory develops invariants and obstructions to the removal of fixed points through continuous deformation. The Lefschetz Fixed number is an algebraic invariant that obstructs the removal of fixed points through continuous deformation. \[L(f)=\sum_{i=0}^\infty (-1)^i \tr\left(f_i:H_i(X;\bQ)\to H_i(X;\bQ)\right). \] The Lefschetz Fixed Point theorem states if $L(f)\neq 0$, then $f$ (and therefore all $g\simeq f$) has a fixed point. In general, the converse is not true. However, Lefschetz Number is a complete invariant …
