A Non-Homogeneous, Spatio-Temporal, Wavelet Multiresolution Analysis And Its Application To The Analysis Of Motion, Thomas J. Burns Dec 1993

A Non-Homogeneous, Spatio-Temporal, Wavelet Multiresolution Analysis And Its Application To The Analysis Of Motion, Thomas J. Burns

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents a multiresolution wavelet analysis tool for analyzing motion in time sequential imagery. A theoretical framework is developed for constructing an L2R wavelet multiresolution analysis from three non-identical spatial and temporal L2R wavelet multiresolution analyses. This framework provides the flexibility to tailor the spatio-temporal frequency characteristics of the three dimensional wavelet filter to match the frequency behavior of the analyzed signal. An unconventional, discrete multiresolution wavelet decomposition algorithm is developed which yields a rich set of independent spatio-temporally oriented frequency channels for analyzing, the size and speed characteristics of moving objects. Unlike conventional wavelet decomposition methods, this algorithm …

During the last five decades or even more a large number of researchers are trying to design intelligent systems to perform tasks at which human beings are more efficient at present. One of the most important behavioral tasks in which human beings show their expertise is image analysis or recognition; where a large amount of pictorial data is processed in a very small amount of time (called real time). Widespread attempts have been made to develop intelligent systems (under different names, like pattern recognition system, image under- standing system, computer vision system etc.) for pictorial pattern analysis and recognition. The …

Interaction Of Price And Technology In The Presence Of Structural Specificities:An Analysis Of Crop Production In Kerala., Delampady Narayana Dr. Nov 1993

Interaction Of Price And Technology In The Presence Of Structural Specificities:An Analysis Of Crop Production In Kerala., Delampady Narayana Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The present study attempts to understand the agricultural economy of Kerala in terms of the structural characteristics specific to the state. This approach requires such aspects to be incorporated in the analysis, and also entails a shift from certain accepted modes of thinking and statistical treatment used in the analysis of field crops. The specificities arise from certain distinctive features on the demand and supply sides'. On the demand side, there is substi tution between rice and tapioca, and the two crops constitute the food group. The rest of the crops form the non-food group, and there is no substitution among …

On Markov Processes Charecterised Via Martingale Problem., Abhay G. Bhatt Dr. Oct 1993

On Markov Processes Charecterised Via Martingale Problem., Abhay G. Bhatt Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Martingale approach to the study of finite dimensional diffusions was initiated by Stroock-Varadhan, who coined the term martingale problem. Their success led to a similar approach being used to study Markov processes occuring in other areas such as infinite particle systems, branching processes, genetic models, density dependent population processes, random evolutions etc.Suppose X is a Markov process corresponding to a semigroup (T)e20 with generator L. Then all the information about X is contained in L. We also have thatMf(t) := f(X(t)) – ∫t0 Lf(X(s))dsis a martingale for every f ∈ D(L). i.e. X is a solution to the martingale problem …

Coxeter Groups And Positive Matrices., Arbind Kumar Lal Dr. Aug 1993

Coxeter Groups And Positive Matrices., Arbind Kumar Lal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis, we study positive matrices (matrices whose entries are nonnegative as well as matrices which are positive semidefinite) with Coxeter groups as the underlying theme. For an exposition on Coxeter groups see Humphreys (1990).A Cozeter system consists of a pair (W, s); where W is a group and S is a set which consists of the generators of the group W. The elements of the set S have only the relations of the form (ss')m(s.) 1; where m(s, s) 1, m(s, s') = m(s,s) 2 2 for s s in S. In case no relation occurs for a …

Optimizing Communication Routing In Parallel Computer Architectures, Nikolaos T. Liolios Aug 1993

Optimizing Communication Routing In Parallel Computer Architectures, Nikolaos T. Liolios

Masters Theses

This thesis is a research effort to improve on existing algorithms for processor placement and routing on hypercube and 2d-transputer parallel architectures that perform communications through message propagation. Given a set of processors N, randomly distributed on the parallel computer network, the problem is to find an optimal communication routing that minimizes the number of required links and intermediate processors. It was concluded that the spanning tree is the best starting heuristic for the routing problem. For hypercubes an algorithm was developed that outperforms all algorithms in the literature. For 2d-transputers the method of overlap maximization used in VLSI routing, …

Boundary Value Problems In Rectilinearly Anisotropic Thermoelastic Solids, Gilbert Kerr Jul 1993

Boundary Value Problems In Rectilinearly Anisotropic Thermoelastic Solids, Gilbert Kerr

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The boundary value problems which are considered are the type that arise due to the presence of a Griffith crack (or cracks) in an anisotropic thermoelastic solid. The thermoelastic field, in such materials, when the infinitesimal theory is employed, is governed by a set of elliptic partial differential equations. The general solution of these equations is expressed in terms of arbitrary analytic functions whose real parts, in turn, are expressed in terms of Fourier type integrals or Fourier series. Integral transform techniques are then used to determine the stress intensity factors (and other pertinent information) for various crack geometries. In …

Signal Processing With Neural Networks, Pero Smrzlic Jun 1993

Signal Processing With Neural Networks, Pero Smrzlic

Masters Theses

In this study, we introduce the Adaptive Back Propagation (ABP) learning algorithm, computationally superior to the standard Back Propagation. The ABP is based on the new activation function, with its corresponding adaptive learning parameter. By using the combination of computer simulations and analysis in the domain of activation function, the Method of One Hidden layer was developed for the effective utilization of units in one-hidden layer networks. A parallel version of the ABP was designed and implemented on a nCUBE-2 supercomputer with 128 processors.

The simulation results suggested a strong correlation between frequency of signals and the role of hidden …

Bayesian Estimation Of Surface Information From Radar Images, Keith David Hartt May 1993

Bayesian Estimation Of Surface Information From Radar Images, Keith David Hartt

Open Access Dissertations

The dissertation presents a method for deriving the shape of a surface from a radar image of the surface. An appropriate model of radar image formation is derived from physical principles. A Bayesian formulation of the inversion problem is developed upon which a computational strategy is based. Theoretical results on random surfaces relevant to the prior distribution are presented, and convergence and optimality properties of a new sampling algorithm are described. The technique is applied to Magellan data of Venus.

Linear Operators That Preserve Qualitative Matrix Structures, Shumin Ye May 1993

Linear Operators That Preserve Qualitative Matrix Structures, Shumin Ye

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

We characterized the group of linear operators that preserve sign-nonsingular matrices over Mn(R). Then we extended these results to n show that a linear operator T that strongly preserves L-matrices over Mm,n(R) if and only if T preserves L-matrices and T is also one to one on m,n the set of cells. We also characterized the group of linear operators that strongly preserve L-matrices.

In addition, we characterized the group of linear operators that preserve super L- matrices, the subset of L-matrix. Also we investigated linear …

Symmetric Designs, Difference Sets, And A New Way To Look At Macfarland Difference Sets, John Bowen Polhill Jr. Apr 1993

Symmetric Designs, Difference Sets, And A New Way To Look At Macfarland Difference Sets, John Bowen Polhill Jr.

Honors Theses

In this paper, the topics of symmetric designs and difference sets are discussed both separately and in relation to each other. Then an approach to MacFarland Difference Sets using the theory behind homomorphisms from groups into the complex numbers is introduced. This method is contrasted with the method of finding this type of difference set used by E.S. Launder in his book Symmetric Designs: An Algebraic Approach.

Frequency Domain Speech Compression Using The Karhunen-Loeve Transform, Donald W. Dryley Mar 1993

Frequency Domain Speech Compression Using The Karhunen-Loeve Transform, Donald W. Dryley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was test the influence of phase on the quality of speech reproduced by a speaker dependent compression system. The tests consisted of compressing frequency domain speech vectors using the Karhunen-Loeve Transform, with and without phase, then making subjective judgements as to the reproduced quality. Error Metrics were then tested for their suitability as predictors of reproduced quality. The compression software transformed each speech vector into a vector of complex Fourier coefficients (only half of the coefficients are needed as transform is hermitian). Phase was preserved by using the real frequency components to form one vector …

Survival Function Estimation Under Random Censoring., Debajyoti Dhar Dr. Feb 1993

Survival Function Estimation Under Random Censoring., Debajyoti Dhar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Statistical methods for life data analysis are used to measure, compare and predict characteristics of the distribution of the time to some particular event of interest, often called failure after a length of time, called life time. Failure can occur at most once for an individual. Examples of failure time include the lifetimes of machine components in industrial reliability, the duration of strikes or periods of unemployment in economic studies, the time taken by subjects to complete specified tasks in psychological experiments, the lengths of tracks photographic plates in particle physics and the on survival time of patients in clinical …

Optimal Short Run Electricity Supply India:Rationing And Pricing Optionsa., Uma Vishvanathan Dr. Feb 1993

Optimal Short Run Electricity Supply India:Rationing And Pricing Optionsa., Uma Vishvanathan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The supply of electricity to consumers in India is governed by the Electricity Supply Act (1948). Under the Act, electricity can be supplied from two sources: (i) licensees - that is, a person or body licensed under the Indian Electricity Act 1910 to supply energy, or a person who has obtained sanction under Section 28 of that Act to engage in the business of supplying energy. (ii) The State Electricity Boards constituted under various State Governments and charged with the general duty of promoting the coordinated development of the generation, supply and distribution of electricity within the State in the …

Agricultural Tenancy In Palanpur., Naresh Kumar Sharma Dr. Feb 1993

Agricultural Tenancy In Palanpur., Naresh Kumar Sharma Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Institutions and arrangements governing the property and use of land are crucial to the development of productive forces. This is true, in particular, of triennial arrangements. The system of land tenures that prevailed during the colonial period was widely considered the main cause of economic stagnation at the time of India's independence (1947). It was also perceived as highly exploitative of the tenants. Thus, land reforms were accorded the highest priority by the new Indian Government. Soon all the State Legislatures started enacting land reform laws - starting with the Legislative Assembly of Bihar immediately after 1947 and the Legislative …

Generalised Inverses Of Matrices Over Rings., K. Manjunatha Prasad Dr. Feb 1993

Generalised Inverses Of Matrices Over Rings., K. Manjunatha Prasad Dr.

Doctoral Theses

For a complex or a real matrix A, a matrix G is called a generalized inverse ( or g-inverse) of A if(1) AGA = AThe theory of generalized inverses over the field of complex numbers is well- studied in the literature (see (2), (11), (33), and (62) for an extensive bibliography). Even for matrices over a general field the above equation carries over. In fact, even for matrices over a general ring, equation (1) makes sense. Hence one can talk of g-inverses of matrices over general rings. Some work on g-inverses of matrices over fields also can be found in …

On Some Measurement Problem In Economics., Nachiketa Chattopadhyay Dr. Feb 1993

On Some Measurement Problem In Economics., Nachiketa Chattopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In many branches of economie theory, quantitative relationships play a major role. Translating actions of individuals or groups of individuals, in the various soci- etal processes of production, distribution or consumption, into measurable or quan- tifiable notions has been one of the most important problems. When we take the society as a whole, diverse economic activities of ita memhers need to be collectively presented and it has given rise to interesting aggregation problems. Economists have tried to solve these problems by constructing social index numbers. Simi- larly, quantifying actions of individual units (for example, a firm /a consumer) has brought …

Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Environmental Activism: A Case Study Of Beach Clean-Up Participants, Elizabeth Ann Fuller Jan 1993

Analysis Of Factors Contributing To Environmental Activism: A Case Study Of Beach Clean-Up Participants, Elizabeth Ann Fuller

Theses and Major Papers

This study was initiated to investigate factors which contribute to environmental activism. Towards this end, three hypotheses were investigated. First, it was hypothesized that beach clean-up participants would harbor pro-environmental attitudes. Second, it was hypothesized that participants would be relatively young, politically liberal, well-educated, and wealthy. Finally, it was hypothesized that particular types of social structure would influence a person's decision to participate in a beach clean-up. Specifically, it was hypothesized that participants at each clean-up location would be clique members and/or would be structurally equivalent. Surprising, it was revealed that there was virtually no difference in attitude between the …

Bochner Integrals And Vector Measures, Ivaylo D. Dinov Jan 1993

Bochner Integrals And Vector Measures, Ivaylo D. Dinov

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This project extends known theorems for scalar valued functions to the context of Banach space valued functions. In particular, it contains generalizations of the classical theory of Lebesgue Integrals, complex measures, Radon-Nikodym theorem and Riesz Representation theorem. We explore some properties of functions whose domains are abstract Banach spaces, where the usual derivatives are replaced by Radon-Nikodym derivatives.

The first two Chapters are devoted to infinite dimensional measurable functions and the problem of integrating them. Most of the basic properties of Bochner integration are forced on it by the classical Lebesgue integration and the usual definition of measurability.

The Radon-Nikodym …
