With few minerals or other natural resources, Rwanda believes that she can still achieve her ambitions by investing in human capital - her unique resource. If this ambition can be achieved, then is this the next role model for international development? We used a case study design and analysis methods to examine development models used elsewhere in recent decades, using both qualitative and quantitative data on Rwanda to establish the comparative advantages in relation to Singapore’s economic development model. In the fall of 2003, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), in cooperation with USDA-Wildlife Services (USDA-WS), completed an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the management of Double-crested Cormorants (DCCOs) in the United States. The USFWS subsequently published new regulations to implement the EIS proposed strategy. One part of the new regulations, a “public resource depredation order” (PRDO), allows state wildlife agencies, tribes, and USDA-WS to control DCCOs on a localized level to protect fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats in 24 states. We’ll discuss this new policy and will highlight the management activities, including monitoring and evaluation efforts, …

The foregoing chapters have demonstrated that household sustainability is a complex issue that requires thoughtful discussion from multiple perspectives. Indeed throughout this collection we have encouraged a dialogical approach. On the one hand our aim has been to bring researchers from human geography and cultural studies into a productive dialogue around the material geographies of household sustainability. There has been enthusiastic cross-fertilisation of ideas and approaches shown through the chapters, which critically develop the interconnections between the material, socia-technical, culturaJ, embodied and political dimensions which make households function, with particular attention to how they (might) function in environmentally sustainable ways. …

Invasive Species In Europe: Ecology, Status And Policy, Reuben P. Keller, Juergen Geist, Johnathan M. Jeschke, Ingolf Kuhn

We tested the accuracy of an invasive aquatic plant risk assessment system in the United States that we modified from a system originally developed by New Zealand’s Biosecurity Program. The US system is comprised of 38 questions that address biological, historical, and environmental tolerance traits. Values associated with each response are summed to produce a total score for each species that indicates its risk of invasion. To calibrate and test this risk assessment, we identified 39 aquatic plant species that are major invaders in the continental US, 31 species that have naturalized but have no documented impacts (minor invaders), and …

For several decades following its independence from Great Britain, Ghana’s policies continued to promote over-extraction of natural resources to the detriment of its economy and rural communities. Agricultural and forestry policy has gradually evolved to foster more sustainable and equitable practices, as in building partnerships with the private sector to fund infrastructure improvements. Policy has recently recognized the dire need to adopt agricultural practices and means of forest resource extraction that are compatible with ecological stewardship. However, many shortcomings are still apparent. Large logging operations completely disregard forestry regulations with impunity, whereas rural sustenance extractors are severely punished in the …
