Increasing concern about the environmental impacts of greenhouse gases and PM 2.5 particulates has prompted many researchers to examine the processes of gaseous loss of nitrogen (N) from agricultural land. As agricultural production becomes more competitive and producers strive to become more efficient by reducing input costs, they will increasingly employ practices such as the rotational stocking, also called Management Intensive Grazing (MIG). MIG utilizes high animal stocking rates for short periods of time to efficiently harvest pasture crops. Unfortunately, MIG also produces relatively high concentrations of livestock excreta. When incorporating targeted grazing into farming systems, livestock producers and farm operators need assurance that the benefits from their activities are worth their investments. This chapter will focus on how integrating grazing, particularly with sheep and goats, into farming systems can offer those benefits. The concepts are not new. Cropping systems were once integrated with livestock production: Livestock gained forage value from crop aftermath, crops were grown to sustain livestock, and livestock were used as implements to produce crops. Today, few cropping systems include livestock. Sheep and goats are traditionally produced on rangelands or pasture forages and supplemented during winter …

In a 2 yr study 180 lactating cows (2 to 10 yr old) grazing pastures dominated by smooth bromegrass and Kentucky bluegrass near Brookings, SD received 3 supplemental treatments for 48 d beginning in mid May. Cows received 4.6 lb DM of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), 4.3 lb corn DM, or no supplement daily, starting approximately 14 d prior to the start of the breeding season. Cows were bled weekly for 5 wk beginning 1 wk prior to the beginning of the treatment period. Serum was analyzed for progesterone concentration to determine the onset of cyclicity.
