College And University Administrators' Attitudes Concerning Contract-Managed And Self-Operated Food Service, Thomas F. Gaddis
College And University Administrators' Attitudes Concerning Contract-Managed And Self-Operated Food Service, Thomas F. Gaddis
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to ascertain factors which influence college and university administrators' decisions to change the management format of their food service operation. Specifically this included 1) developing a list of potential factors which could influence an administrator's decision in this area, 2) determining administrators perceived importance of the factors, 3) determining the attitudes of administrators toward contract companies and the services provided, and 4) determining if significant differences existed between attitudes toward contract companies as they related to size and type of institution (public or private).
A list of potential decisional factors was developed by both …

The Effect Of Nutrition Education In The Form Of Cafeteria Posters On Knowledge, Attitudes, And Plate Waste Of Sixth Graders, Camille L. Ivey
The Effect Of Nutrition Education In The Form Of Cafeteria Posters On Knowledge, Attitudes, And Plate Waste Of Sixth Graders, Camille L. Ivey
Masters Theses
The purpose of this research was to determine whether there was a difference in nutrition knowledge scores, nutrition attitude scores, and plate waste of 6th graders who received nutrition education in the form of cafeteria posters for a period of 19 days and 6th graders who received no nutrition education. In addition, the effects of gender, weight control action, and source of lunch on these scores were assessed.
Nutrition knowledge and attitudes regarding dietary fat were assessed in 6th grade students in 3 middle schools using pretest and posttest questionnaires. Nutrition education in 2 of the middle schools consisted of …
The Role Of Fire In The Regeneration Of Table Mountain Pine In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Gregory L. Sanders
The Role Of Fire In The Regeneration Of Table Mountain Pine In The Southern Appalachian Mountains, Gregory L. Sanders
Masters Theses
Table Mountain pine (Pinus pungens Lam.) is highly intolerant, serotinous-coned species endemic to the Appalachian Mountains. Before it can successfully be regenerated, three conditions must occur--(1) heat must be present to open its serotinous cones, (2) seed must fall on mineral soil, and (3) the existing forest canopy must be removed in to expose seedlings to full sunlight. These conditions are only met in the advent of fire.
This study was conducted in stands of Table Mountain pine that were burned by wildfires to see which burning conditions best regenerate the species. It showed that the best regeneration occurred …
Coyotes In Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Evaluation Of Methods To Monitor Relative Abundance, Movement Ecology, And Habitat Use, Barron Allen Crawford
Coyotes In Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Evaluation Of Methods To Monitor Relative Abundance, Movement Ecology, And Habitat Use, Barron Allen Crawford
Masters Theses
Introduction: In North America, coyotes (Canis latrans) are the most primitive members of the genus Canis and are believed to have evolved from the ancestral coyote (C. leophagus) (Nowak 1978). During the late Pleistocene period, coyotes were found throughout North America. However, until the 1900's the range of modern coyotes only extended as far east as Wisconsin and south to central Texas (Nowak 1978). It appears that wolf populations were the major factor limiting coyotes in Eastern North America (Nowak 1978, Parker 1988).
Coyotes are adaptable carnivores that have survived human persecution and expanded their range …
Reintroduction Of River Otters Into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Mary C. Miller
Reintroduction Of River Otters Into Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Mary C. Miller
Masters Theses
Beginning in December 1988, 14 river otters were obtained from South Carolina and Louisiana, implanted with radio transmitters, and released on Little River in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). A total of 896 radio locations were obtained. There were four mortalities.
Five otters established home ranges in Little River. Four otters traveled out of Little River. Of those otters, three established home ranges on the North Carolina side of GSMNP. One otter established a home range in the French Broad River outside of GSMNP. The remaining otter has not been located since its release.
After a brief period of …
A Study Of Members Of A Public Health Nutrition Practice Group: How Education, Training, And Experience Influence Competency In Practice, Annemarie Jane Novak
A Study Of Members Of A Public Health Nutrition Practice Group: How Education, Training, And Experience Influence Competency In Practice, Annemarie Jane Novak
Masters Theses
This research was conducted to identify the self-reported continuing education needs of members of the Public Health Nutrition Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association and to determine the relationships between education, training, and experience factors and public health nutrition practice. The three categories (nutrition, public health, and social/behavioral science and education) of knowledge and skill statements identified in the public health nutrition graduate curriculum guide, Strategies for Success, were adapted for use in a survey which asked respondents to self-report the level and degree of use in the job of each knowledge/skill using a Likert-like scale. Respondents were asked …

The Saurian Psyche Revisted: Lizards In Research, Neil Greenberg
The Saurian Psyche Revisted: Lizards In Research, Neil Greenberg
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
This essay is intended to guide researchers interested in lizards as prospective experimental models to identify an appropriate species for their research needs and to care for lizards in a manner that will not compromise their utility. Coupled with these is a concern for critical thinking about the ethical dimension of lizard research, one guide for which is to consider the intersection of human needs and lizard needs.
Before proceeding further, several arbitrary premises must be made clear:
1. While wholly deserving of study because of their intrinsic interest, I will assume that the lizard research to be undertaken is …
