Patterns Of Fetal Lamb Regional Cerebral Blood Flow During And After Prolonged Hypoxia, Stephen Ashwal, John S. Majcher, Nestor Vain, Lawrence D. Longo Dec 1979

Patterns Of Fetal Lamb Regional Cerebral Blood Flow During And After Prolonged Hypoxia, Stephen Ashwal, John S. Majcher, Nestor Vain, Lawrence D. Longo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

[Abstract not included]

Speculation: In the fetal lamb during prolonged intrauterine hypoxia, total and regional cerebral blood flows increase to the same extent without evidence of preferential shunting to critical brainstem or subcortical areas. Neuropathologic studies have indicated relative sparing of these areas during similar animal experimental or human neonatal conditions. This suggests that the pattern of hypoxic ischemic insult to the neonatal central nervous system associated with asphyxia may differ from that produced by hypoxia alone. In addition, during asphyxia these pathologic changes may result primarily from hypotension and decreased regional cerebral blood flow, or from regional metabolic derangements …

The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Dietary Linoleic Acid On Serum Cholesterol And Hdl-Cholesterol In Healthy Male Subjects, Donna Miller Davidge Dec 1979

The Effects Of Varying Levels Of Dietary Linoleic Acid On Serum Cholesterol And Hdl-Cholesterol In Healthy Male Subjects, Donna Miller Davidge

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Sixteen healthy male subjects were randomly divided into four equal groups and fed a nutritionally balanced 30 calories % fat diet, with approximately 2500 calories and less than 15 mg cholesterol/day, for 28 days. Within each group a constant level of linoleic acid was given for the duration of the study--either 2, 6, 14 or 18 % linoleic acid. Rate of changes in total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and the ratio of total to HDL-cholesterol were subjected to analysis of variance and regression analysis. The results showed changes in total cholesterol and ratio of total to HDL-cholesterol to be significant. The …

Effect Of Lacto-Ovo And Total Vegetarian Diets On Serum, Urinary And Fecal B₁₂ Levels, Cathleen D. Throssell Aug 1979

Effect Of Lacto-Ovo And Total Vegetarian Diets On Serum, Urinary And Fecal B₁₂ Levels, Cathleen D. Throssell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Serum, urinary and fecal levels of ten lacto-ovo-vegetarians and nine total vegetarians were assayed using Ochromonas malhamensis. Intakes of vitamin B12 , protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber and calories were calculated using 7-day diet histories and questionnaires. Correlations between nutrients consumed, years on diet, serum, urinary and fecal B12 levels were also calculated.

Mean serum B12 levels of the lacto-ovo-vegetarians and total vegetarians were 657 pg/ml and 381 pg/ml respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups. The average daily intake of vitamin B12 was 2.0 ug for lacto-ovo-vegetarians and 0.6 ug for the total …

Distributional Ecology Of Vegetation In The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau, California, John A. Rosario Aug 1979

Distributional Ecology Of Vegetation In The Vernal Pools Of The Santa Rosa Plateau, California, John A. Rosario

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Interpool distribution studies of 10 vernal pools on the Santa Rosa Plateau found area to be the best single predictor of species richness in each type of regression model evaluated. Area predicted most accurately in a mixed linear-curvilinear regression model (y = a + b log x). Area appeared to reflect ecologic diversity, because multiple linear regression models provided better predictions of species richness using combinations of physical characteristics which excluded area from the regression equation. In addition, species turnover was demonstrated in a single vernal pool that was evaluated.

Intrapool distribution was studied along a soil moisture/microtopographic gradient in …

Plant Response Parameters To General Patton's Armored Maneuvers In The Eastern Mojave Desert Of California, Randall J. Iwasiuk Aug 1979

Plant Response Parameters To General Patton's Armored Maneuvers In The Eastern Mojave Desert Of California, Randall J. Iwasiuk

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study, which was undertaken from September, 1977 through June, 1978 was to survey the response of perennial vegetation to General Patton's World War II armored maneuvers. This information will be used to help construct a basis for predicting recovery rates on the effects of off-road vehicle impacts in the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA). These impacts were assessed in three usage categories: tank tracks in the maneuvers areas; roadways, which were used primarily by jeeps and trucks; and tent areas, cleared areas in which tents and other semi-permanent structures were erected. The data generated from these …

Restriction Enzyme Analysis Of Incomplete Parental Replicative Forms Of Øx174, Alicia Morales Bogardus Aug 1979

Restriction Enzyme Analysis Of Incomplete Parental Replicative Forms Of Øx174, Alicia Morales Bogardus

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The initial step in the infectious cycle of the single-stranded DNA phage øX174 is the synthesis of a DNA strand complementary to the infecting viral DNA producing a duplex molecule, the parental replicative form (RF). Electron micrographic examination of parental RF produced from viruses exposed to ultra-violet (UV) light suggests that synthesis begins at only one site. However, in vitro results and some recent reports of in vivo experiements contradict that interpretation.

Using restriction enzymes we have re-examined the incomplete RF made from UV-damaged phage. Parental RF made in vivo from viruses exposed to various UV doses were purified by …

Plant Response To The Barstow To Las Vegas Motorcycle Race Of November, 1974, Candace E. Horsley Aug 1979

Plant Response To The Barstow To Las Vegas Motorcycle Race Of November, 1974, Candace E. Horsley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine the disturbance spectrum of the perennial plant vegetation by the Barstow to Las Vegas motorcycle race. Transects were taken at the pit area, starting line, and at various locations along the race course. Measurements were also taken in undisturbed control sites near the test areas, the topographic and bio tic features being judged as equal. Methods employed consisted of aerial photograph analysis just before and after the race. On site ground measurements were taken four years after the 1974 motorocycle event. Measurements of diversity, stability, productivity, and community quality were calculated. The …

The Effects Of Temperature And Ph On The Differentiation Of Trypanosoma Lewisi (Kent, 1880) Laveran & Mesnil, 1901, In A Defined Medium, Carolann R. Rosario Jun 1979

The Effects Of Temperature And Ph On The Differentiation Of Trypanosoma Lewisi (Kent, 1880) Laveran & Mesnil, 1901, In A Defined Medium, Carolann R. Rosario

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Trypanosoma lewisi is an arthropod-transmitted protozoan parasite found in the bloodstream of rats. In its life cycle it undergoes cellular differentiation. It is primarily found as the trypomastigote form in the rat and as the epimastigote form in the arthropod, the rat flea. Various studies have been done on hemoflagellates to determine the factors responsible for stimulating the differentiation from one form to the other. Included in these factors are pH, temperature, and protein fractions from fetal calf serum. Recent efforts have also been aimed at developing simple or defined media for physiological or biochemical studies on hemoflagellates. The purpose …

The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer Jun 1979

The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.

At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …

The Effects Of Orally Administered Charcoal On Intestinal Gas, Herbert J. Thompson Jun 1979

The Effects Of Orally Administered Charcoal On Intestinal Gas, Herbert J. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Our primary objectives were to determine if orally administered charcoal effectively decreased intestinal gas, and relieved subjective symptoms associated with a high gas producing meal.

The adsorptive properties of charcoal for those gases usually found in intestines (CO2, H2, CH4, H2S) were first tested by placing measured samples of each gas alone with weighted samples of activated charcoal in a respirometer.

The degree of adsorption of each gas by charcoal was determined. Charcoal effectively adsorbed H2 and CO2.

A group of normal human males were fed a gas producing …

Concomitant Infections With The Parasites Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 And Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Raillet, 1896 In The Laboratory Mouse, Musmusculus, Joan Chew Liang Tan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four groups of female Swiss Webster mice were injected intraperitoneally with similar volumes of normal saline, sonicated Trypanosoma musculi and saline, sonicated trypanosomes and Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) and FCA. When the mice became immune and thus responded negatively to a T. musculi challenge, sera were collected and administered to four other groups of mice to establish passive immunity in these animals.

An established dose of innoculum of Trichinella spiralis larvae (8.1 larvae/gram of body weight) was given to all the mice by gastric gavage. These mice were killed 26 days later and the musculature digested with artificial gastric juice …
