Revised Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, 1979, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1979

Revised Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, 1979, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Faunal checklists provide useful ready references for many kinds of endeavors, both in the laboratory and in the field, and are particularly helpful to students. Since publication more than four years ago of a "Revised checklist of North American mammals north of Mexico" (Jones et al., 1975), demand for that list has exceeded the supply set aside for general distribution; additionally, systematic studies of mammals published since 1974 necessitate changes in the list. Primarily for these reasons, a newly revised checklist of mammalian species occurring in the Nearctic to the north of Mexico is here presented. As in this and …

Variation In Pappogeomys Castanops (Geomyidae) On The Llano Estacado Of Texas And New Mexico, Robert C. Dowler, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Nongeographic and geographic variation in the yellow-cheeked pocket gopher, Pappogeomys castanops, were analyzed in specimens collected in northwestern Texas and eastern New Mexico. Univariate and multivariate methods of analysis were utilized to assess variation in morphometric characters among 12 samples of P. castanops. Because of significant variation with age, only adult specimens were used in analyses. Adult males were significantly larger than females in all 13 characters studied. Our analyses of geographic variation reveal that those specimens previously assigned to the subspecies P. c. simulans are not sufficiently distinct to warrant subspecific designation.

Predation Of Upland Game And Its Management, Roger Wells

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

There is probably no greater topic that elicits greater emotion in public wildlife discussions than that of predation. A variety of groups each with their own particular special interest surround the topic.

Some advocate complete protection of predators on the premise that their activities merely result in a "balance of nature." The opposite viewpoint argue just as strongly for the total elimination of Predators of valued wildlife in order to have greater number for man's enjoyment.

Cyanogenesis In Indiangrass Seedlings, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, Kenneth P. Vogel Dec 1979

Cyanogenesis In Indiangrass Seedlings, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, Kenneth P. Vogel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

In a study of seedlings of 72 entries representing 39 species, 14 genera, and 2 tribes of grasses, only entries of the genus Sorghastrum were found to contain the cyanogenic glucoside, dhurrin [(S)-p-hydroxymandelonitrile β-D-glucopyranoside]. Dhurrin was found in seedlings of each of the 10 entries of indiangrass [Sorghastrum mutans (L) Nash] and the three entries of S. pellitum.
Seedlings of five indiangrass cultivars were assayed for dhurrin concentration. Levels expressed as HCN potential (HCN-p) ranged from about 900 ppm for 'Holt' to about 1,200 ppm for 'Llano' and 'Oto'.
Further studies with Oto seedlings indicated that …

Economic Implications Of Alternative Dry-Bulk Fertilizer Supply Systems: A South-Central Nebraska Case Study, Mary Berglund, Dale G. Anderson Nov 1979

Economic Implications Of Alternative Dry-Bulk Fertilizer Supply Systems: A South-Central Nebraska Case Study, Mary Berglund, Dale G. Anderson

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

This study analyzed the economic implications of alternative patterns of rail service for a case-study area in south-central Nebraska. Special attention was given to effects of branchline abandonments on the delivery system for dry-bulk fertilizer. The study was an extension of an earlier Nebraska track abandonment study which focused only on grain traffic. The purpose of the latest study was to establish the effect of including dry-bulk fertilizer, the major commodity moving into the area by rail, on the earlier results. The addition of fertilizer to the analysis did not appreciably change the outcome of the earlier grain-oriented study.

Significance Of Hemolytic Activity Of Some Radiation- Resistant Micrococci In Food, Ardyce Welch, R. Burt Maxcy

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Micrococci resistant to 1 Mrad ofgamma radiation were isolated from irradiated chicken. Three isolates were hemolytic on blood agar plates and were selected for further study. Two other radiation-resistant micrococci, Micrococcus radiodurans and Micrococcus radiophilus, were included in the study because there is only a very limited amount of information regarding hemolytic activity of these organisms and their potential role of public health importance. Tests to determine hemolytic patterns, hemolytic activity of extracellular substances, leukocytic activity, presence of enzymes commonly associated with pathogenicity (coagulase, deoxyribonuclease, phosphatase), and pathogenicity for laboratory animals all suggested that the organisms would not be of …

Effects Of No-Tillage Fallow As Compared To Conventional Tillage In A Wheat-Fallow System, C. R. Fenster, G. A. Peterson Oct 1979

Effects Of No-Tillage Fallow As Compared To Conventional Tillage In A Wheat-Fallow System, C. R. Fenster, G. A. Peterson

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The benefits of reducing tillage by use of herbicides for weed control emphasizes why research was started to study a fallow system where all tillage was replaced by herbicides. Wheat planting was then the only soil disturbing operation. Objectives of the research were to compare the effects of no-tillage (chemical), stubble-mulch and plow (bare fallow) systems of fallow on: 1. Grain yield. 2. Grain protein. 3. Residue retention. 4. Soil nitrate-nitrogen accumulation. 5. Soil water accumulations during fallow. Data presented are in the form of a progress report. These experiments will continue.

A New And Unusual Eimerian (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) From The Liver Of The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Donald W. Duszynski, Mobashir A. Solangi, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications

Oocysts and sporocysts of Eimeria funduli sp. n. are described from the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, on the basis of light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and location in the liver of infected hosts. The spherical sporulated oocysts of E. funduli isolated from liver tissue measure 20-31(25) μm across with ovoid sporocysts 9-11 × 5-7 (10 × 6) μm. A micropyle, polar granule, and oocyst residuum are absent, but sporocysts have Stieda and substieda bodies, a few residual granules, and 10-25 (15) unique projecting structures with expanded distal portions that we term “sporopodia.” Sporopodia 1-3 (2) μm high …

Inflorescence Architecture And Flower Sex Ratios In Sagittaria Brevirostra (Alismataceae), Robert B. Kaul

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Two populations of Sagittaria brevirostra from the same lake were sampled 10 years apart and yielded similar data on inflorescence structure and on numbers and ratios of male and female flowers. Larger inflorescences have relatively more male than female flowers than do smaller inflorescences. Pollination success is unrelated to inflorescence size or sex ratio within an inflorescence.

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

This is the ninth report of results from an International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery (IWWPN) organized in 1968 by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the Science and Education Administration (SEA), U.S. Department of Agriculture, under a contract with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State. The Nursery was designed to (1) test the adaptation and stability of winter wheat cultivars in a range of latitudes, daylengths, fertility conditions, water management regimes, and disease complexes; (2) identify superior winter cultivars to serve as recipient genotypes for high protein and high lysine genes, (3) test the degree of expression …

Isolation Of Radiation-Resistant Bacteria Without Exposure To Irradiation, Scott Sanders, R. Burt Maxcy Sep 1979

Isolation Of Radiation-Resistant Bacteria Without Exposure To Irradiation, Scott Sanders, R. Burt Maxcy

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Resistance to desiccation was utilized in the selection of highly radiation-resistant asporogenous bacteria from non-irradiated sources. A bacterial suspension in phosphate buffer was dried in a thin film at 25°C and 33% relative humidity. Storage under these conditions for 15 days or more reduced the number of radiation-sensitive bacteria. Further selection for radiation-resistant bacteria was obtained by irradiation of bacteria on velveteen in the replication process, thereby avoiding the toxic effect of irradiated media. The similarity of radiation resistance and identifying characteristics in irradiated and non-irradiated isolates should allay some concerns that highly radiation-resistant bacteria have been permanently altered by …

Distribution And Natural History Of Amphibians And Reptiles In Western Nebraska With Ecological Notes On The Herpetiles Of Arapaho Prairie, Royce E. Ballinger, John D. Lynch, Patrick H. Cole Sep 1979

Distribution And Natural History Of Amphibians And Reptiles In Western Nebraska With Ecological Notes On The Herpetiles Of Arapaho Prairie, Royce E. Ballinger, John D. Lynch, Patrick H. Cole

Papers in Herpetology

Introduction: The distribution and natural history of amphibians and reptiles have been little studied in the northern states of the great plains. Relative to other vertebrate groups, the herpetofauna of grasslands is depauperate particularly at higher latitudes where temperature becomes a limiting factor to poikilotherms. Nevertheless, certain species of amphibians and reptiles are common in specific habitats and thus form a conspicuous component of the prairie fauna. The purposes of the present study were to document the distributions of herpetiles in a specified region of western Nebraska and to describe general aspects of their natural history. We hope such information …

Morphology And Distribution Of Petiolar Nectaries In Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler, Robert B. Kaul Sep 1979

Morphology And Distribution Of Petiolar Nectaries In Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler, Robert B. Kaul

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The distribution of petiolar nectaries in 24 species of Ipomoea was investigated. Petiolar nectaries were found on 12 species (8 new reports, 4 confirmations of previous reports) and quoted from the literature as being found on 3 other species; they were absent from 9 species investigated. The structure of petiolar nectaries in the genus ranges from simple beds of superficial nectar-secreting trichomes (1 species), to slightly recessed "basin nectaries" (8 species), to "crypt nectaries," which are structurally the most complex extrafloral nectaries known (3 species). (Structures were not determined for 3 species.) Petiolar nectaries are present in all subgenera, but …

Specialized Insectivory: Beetle-Eatinga Nd Moth-Eating Molossid Bats, Patricia W. Freeman Aug 1979

Specialized Insectivory: Beetle-Eatinga Nd Moth-Eating Molossid Bats, Patricia W. Freeman

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The structure and mechanics of insectivores have been little studied. An effort is made here to compare and contrast jaw characteristics of insectivorous bats with those of herbivores and carnivores. Further, in one particular family of bats (Molossidae) jaw modifications are such that animals that take hard-shelled insect prey can be distinguished from those that take soft-shelled insect prey. Beetle-eaters generally have thick jaws, well-developed cranial crests, and fewer but bigger teeth, whereas moth-eaters have thin jaws, little crest build-up, and more but smaller teeth.

Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr Aug 1979

Mule Deer Habitat Guidelines, Richard M. Kerr

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

The purpose of this Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus) Habitat Management Guide is principally to assist BLM managers and biologists in planning for and managing mule deer habitat on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management. For many years Federal land management agencies have made the distinction between the Federal responsibility for managing habitat and the State prerogatives of managing native wild ungulate populations. Certainly the two are inseparably linked. These responsibilities, and up to now "symbiotic relationships", are probably best described succinctly in Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 24.

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1978-79, Bruce Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson Jul 1979

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1978-79, Bruce Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Farm real estate values in Nebraska have trended upward for several decades with only a few interruptions. In Nebraska as well as most of the Nation, dramatic increases have occurred within the last six years. The year 1978-79 was no exception.

Data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for February 1, 1979 showed a 22 percent increase in the average value of Nebraska farmland from a year earlier. This was certainly in contrast to the 4 percent drop in land values reported for 1977-78.

Results of the second annual Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey conducted by the Department …
