Storm Surge Wave Interaction Model: Literature Review Of Surge Models, Model Description, And Results Of Virginian Sea Model, Michael J. Carron, Victor Goldsmith

ABSTRACT The effect of storm surge on wave refraction patterns along 320 km of shoreline in the Virginian Sea (Mid-Atlantic Shelf) has been investigated using an analytical model. Two types of storm surge patterns based on Bodine (1971) and Jelesnianski (1972 and 1974) are used to alter the ocean surface of the Virginian Sea Wave Climate Model (Goldsmith, et al., 1974). The first pattern, based on Bodine's (1971) Bathystrophic Storm Surge Model, is of circular shape (with the maximum sea level rise in the center) and in real situations results mostly from the inverted barometric pressure effect associated with intense …
Seasonal Nearshore Distributions Of Fishes In A Piedmont Section Of The James River, Virginia, Eugene George Maurakis
Seasonal Nearshore Distributions Of Fishes In A Piedmont Section Of The James River, Virginia, Eugene George Maurakis
Master's Theses
The seasonal nearshore distributions of 17 species of fishes were determined in natural and artificially heated areas in a 9.6 km stretch of the Piedmont section of the James River, Virginia from July, 1973 to June, 1974. Analyses of the seasonal distributions were based on abundance and percent frequency of occurrence data. The maximum abundance and percent occurrence of ten of the 17 species of fishes in natural temperature areas occurred in early autumn. Deviations from this pattern included Notropis analostanus, equally abundant throughout the year, and Lepisosteus osseus, Notropis amoenus, Notropis ardens, Notropis rubellus, Catostomus commersoni and Lepomis macrochirus, …

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
These studies were concerned with the development of methods to assist investigators of wildlife population research. Specifically they involve the description of (1) A device which enables an investigator to mark deer at medium range using specially modified darts fired by conventional tranquilizer rifles, (2) Construction of infrared viewers and light sources using surplus equipment and (3) Studies to develop a method of making permanent deer dental impressions under field conditions.

Detailed Bathymetry Of Selected Areas Of The Inner Continental Shelf Of The Virginian Sea: Southeastern Virginia, Virginia Beach, And Wachapreague, Virginia, Carolyn H. Sutton, Victor Goldsmith, Asbury H. Sallenger

The increased need for information involving the physical processes affecting the inner continental shelf has led to these detailed compilations of the nearshore bathymetric data of the Virginian coastline. For example, the growth of population has increased the usage of our beaches for recreation. Contrived short-term and the apparent long-term shortages of fuel, so recently impressed upon the public, have initiated an intensive study of the adjacent continental shelf area for possible future sites of offshore drilling rigs, power plants and port facilities. Among the basic oceanographic information required in all such studies is detailed depth information. To help meet …
