Corticosterone Levels And The Critical Period In Imprinting Behavior Of Domestic Chicks, Lorraine Feldman

The following research was undertaken to monitor a glucocorticoid corticosterone to determine whether or not a reduction in glucocorticoids occurs during the critical period of imprinting behavior. Two groups of domestic chicks (Schaffer white Leghorns) were incubated, hatched and maintained under brooding conditions prior to imprinting procedures. Chicks were first divided into seven age groups, four hour intervals, beginning at hatching. The critical period of imprinting behavior was established with Group I. Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum

Eighteen morphological features were measured for 103 species of insectivorous bats found throughout North America. These characters were standardized to a mean of zero and a standard deviation of unity. Using these morphological characters, thirty-one distinct faunas, ranging from a Boreal Forest fauna with three species to a Wet Tropical fauna with 50 species, were analyzed in an 18-dimensional mathematical hyperspace with the numerical taxonomic techniques of distance, correlation and principal components.

The results show that tropical faunas occupy a greater morphological hypervolume than temperate-zone faunas. Morphological packing is not greater in tropical faunas, and it appears that a limiting …

Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen

A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of bunamidine hydrochloride against the immature and mature stages of Echinococcus granulosus found in Utah. Twenty-seven dogs were obtained from local animal shelters and experimentally infected with the parasite. The drug was given at dosage levels of 25 mg/kg to 50 mg/kg of bodyweight. It was from 85.9 to 98.8% effective against the immature stage, and 100% effective against the adult stage. The results suggest that this drug can feasibly be used under field conditions where hydatid disease is endemic.

The biosynthesis of individual branched- and normal-chain fatty acids during Bacillus thuringiensis spore germination and outgrowth was studied by comparing pulsed and continuous labeling of these fatty acids with [U- ¹⁴C ]acetate. The relative specific activity of each fatty acid varies with time as the cell progresses through outgrowth. However, fatty acid synthesis does occur in two distinct phases. Upon germination, acetate is incorporated only into the iso-isomers i-C₁₃, i-C₁₄, and i-C₁₆; no normal or anteiso synthesis occurs. Objective quality control standards for prepared food, held heated for varying periods of time were studied. Frozen Grade A whole stringless Peco and Slender White string green beans grown, blast frozen, and packaged in Tennessee were used.

Before cooking, 12 lb of each variety were randomly chosen, removed from the freezer and package, mixed together, then divided into seven 735 g portions. Portions were placed in seven half-size shallow stainless steel steam table inset pans marked with holding times of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes.

The vocalizations of suckling piglets were studied during brief tests which involved social isolation, restriction of movement, and exposure to unfamiliar surroundings. Similar trends were shown in most cases by the three classes of call studied - closed mouth grunts, open mouth grunts, and squeals. The rate of calling was much lower when a piglet was in the home pen than when alone in an unfamiliar pen, and more calls were given in both situations when the animal’s movement was restricted by caging. The presence of the dam and four littermates in unfamiliar surroundings caused a large reduction in calling, …

The conditions and chemicals for the use of hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydrosulphite and zinc hydrosulphite for the bleaching of groundwood pulp are discussed. Previous research provided guidelines for establishing optimum conditions for temperature, time, pH, consistency and type of buffer. The research carried out determined optimum conditions for a two-stage peroxide-hydrosulphite sequence. The use of an HCl extraction prior to bleaching was found to be as effective as EDTA for the removal of heavy metals. The combination of peroxide-hydrosulphite gave a brightness rise of 26 G. E. points while hydrogen peroxide alone gave 22.2 points and hydrosulphite alone gave 8.7 …

Proper distribution of adhesive in pigmented coatings is necessary to obtain good printability. This ___ undertaker to study the effect of varying drying rates on adhesive distribution. Using a standard substrate, coating was dried under four separate drying rates on a pilot coater equipped with an air knife coater and three sections of hot air driers. After grinding to carious derths, a spectrophotometric method was used to analyze migration behavior. Dow Saran Microspheres as a light weight high bulk filler has been plagued with certain problems, due to the distribution and retention of the microspheres within the sheet. These problems concern dusting and build-up of the microsphere polymer on the dryer cans and during the printing operations on the finished base sheet.

Single and dual retention aid systems were studied and analyzed as a possible solution to the poor distribution and retention of the spheres within the sheet.

The first attempt to apply operations research to the kraft industry came in 1959 by C.W. Carroll at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. Carroll developed a pulping rate expression and incorporated engineering balances to complete his mathematical model. Carroll then developed an optimization technique to optimize kraft mill economic performance.

This work develops the mathematical model utilizing a different pulping rate expression and further develops certain areas (e.g. recovery boiler, lime kiln, and washer models) utilizing regression equations obtained from literature and material and energy balances in an approach much like that of Boyle and Tobias.

Ultrahigh-solid coating colors were mixed containing (#1) clay, three different ground calcium carbonates of varying particle size, and a styrene-butadiene latex as a sole binder. The resulting colors demonstrated proper coating rheology and were applied to a base paper by means of a blade coater. The coated paper was then evaluated for the physical properties produced.

An effective control of binder migration and water retention without the aid of a hydrocolloid was indicated by tests made on the coated paper. Pedal lymphangiography was performed In 30 patients who subsequently underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy, and radical pelvic lymphadenectomy. In 24 of 30 patients, lymphangiograms correctly predicted the presence or absence of nodal Involvement. In spite of certain limitations of the technique. It is considered an essential diagnostic study in patients considered for possible radical prostatic surgery, or in patients who may be candidates for external megavoltage radiotherapy to the prostate gland and its lymphatic drainage.

The role of immune mechanisms in the development and control of prostatic carcinoma appears to be complicated by the endocrine response of some tumors. The progression of endocrine-independent tumors is more directly related to host-immune response. Evaluation of the role of chemotherapeutic agents must include their effect on the host-immune response. The use of BCC in patients with metastatic prostatic carcinoma produces no alteration in cell-mediated immunity but produces local tumor necrosis. The use of nonspecific antigens to enhance host-immune response may be more effective when used as adjuvant therapy in earlier stages of prostatic adenocarcinoma.

An operative technique Is described which combines regional pelvic lymphadenectomy with radical prostatectomy. The technique has been used on 30 patients with no operative mortality. Morbidity has been within acceptable limits. Thus far, only one patient has shown recurrence of the neoplasm.

Hormonal And Chemotherapeutic Management Of Disseminated Carcinoma Of The Prostate, Robert W. Brownlee

The management of disseminated prostatic carcinoma with hormonal and chemotherapeutic agents is discussed. Hormonal manipulation consists of ablative as well as additive modalities. A new agent, Adriamycin, has shown some effectiveness In selected cases. Significant difficulties are encountered in assessing the objective state of remission of patients undergoing therapy. Further advances through co-operative, randomized clinical trials must be sought. The development of additional chemotherapeutic agents will hopefully expand our horizons.

Ten patients with inoperable prostatic carcinoma, producing ureteral obstruction and azotemia, underwent palliative urinary diversion. Good quality survivals of two months to three years were obtained. These results compare favorably with the good results seer) In gynecologic neoplasm of the bladder, colon and breast. In selected cases of carcinoma of the prostate, palliative urinary diversion is indicated when the prospects exist for further benefit from chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Basic principles of radiation biology and radiation tolerance are reviewed. The Implications for radiation therapy of newer staging techniques in carcinoma of the prostate such as exploratory laparotomy, lymphangiography, and bone marrow acid prosphatase are discussed. A technique for treating the prostate and para-aortic lymph nodes in continuity is presented. Complications and results of therapy are discussed.

The main purpose of this study was to obtain information on forage yield and quality of four alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varieties that differed in level of resistance to potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae Harris) yellowing, when cut at three stages of growth in the second and third cuttings in field plots, with and without insecticide application. The stages of growth were bud, 1/10, and full bloom. Leaf extracts from twelve chlorophyll-deficient mutants of sweetclover (Melilotus alba Desr.) were compared spectrophotometrically and chromatographically with extracts from normal plants to determine contents of chlorophylls a and b Total chlorophyll contents in cotyledons and leaves of all mutants were significantly lower than those in corresponding tissues of normal plants. Chlorophyll contents were generally higher in later emerging leaves of both normal and mutant plants.
