The Environmental Crisis: The Effects Of Ecology Courses On High School Students, Carol C. Fletcher Dec 1971

The Environmental Crisis: The Effects Of Ecology Courses On High School Students, Carol C. Fletcher

Dissertations and Theses

It is a basic premise of this thesis that an environmental crisis exists in the world today and has been worsening at least since World War II. The crisis is evident in the population explosion, the deteriorating air and water quality, and the depletion of our natural resources. With the feeling that all persons must become aware, concerned, and involved with the environmental crisis if the trend is to be reversed, this study is concerned with one segment of the population – high school students.

Sociologists, and especially human ecologists, have not been concerned professionally with the environmental crisis, but …

Doctoral Dissertations

The complex physiographic and climatic history of the Great Valley of East Tennessee has resulted in development of diverse alternating ridge and valley land forms and soils which provide equally diverse forest habitats.

The objectives of this study were (1) to quantify certain topographic features, (2) to analyze statistical relationships of vegetation and tree taxa to selected soil properties and topographic features, (3) to assess magnitude and predictability of these relationships, (4) to document taxonomic diversity of tree taxa, (5) to document and delimit contemporary forest communities and describe interactions with soil-site properties, and (6) to consider relationships of these …

An Investigation Of Some Of The Environmental And Edaphic Factors Effecting The Detoxification And Subsequent Degradation Of An Herbicide, Butachlor, Douglas D. Baird Dec 1971

An Investigation Of Some Of The Environmental And Edaphic Factors Effecting The Detoxification And Subsequent Degradation Of An Herbicide, Butachlor, Douglas D. Baird

Doctoral Dissertations

The influence of specific edaphic environmental factors on the detoxication and subsequent degradation of N-Butoxymethyl-2-chloro-2', 6' diethylacetanilide (butachlor) was evaluated under greenhouse and growth chamber conditions. Detoxication of butachlor, as measured by bioassay with barnyardgrass, was significantly enhanced by increasing temperatures to 32 C, making the soil alkaline, flooding, introducing relatively high levels of organic matter and by allowing exposure of more than four weeks. Total degradation of butachlor to C02 was enhanced also by high temperatures and length of exposure but was inhibited to a certain extent by flooding. Soil produced metabolites, of which three were soluble in …

Addition Of Ba (Oh)2 To A Closed White Water System As A Means Of Controlling Acidity And Sulfate Ion Build Up, Charles R. Tobey Dec 1971

Addition Of Ba (Oh)2 To A Closed White Water System As A Means Of Controlling Acidity And Sulfate Ion Build Up, Charles R. Tobey

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

In an effort to reduce the intake of fresh water into a mill a greater quantity of white water must be recycled to meet the demands of production. Unless some action is taken, continued reuse of the water produces a badly deteriorated paper-making system.

It is believed that the buildup of free acid and sulfate ions from the addition of paper-maker's alum causes the degradation. A bench trial using a Noble and Wood hand-sheet maker capable of recirculating white water was used to duplicate such a deteriorated system and then to restore it with the introduction of Ba(OH)2. …

Variance Analysis Of Basis Weight Variation On The Pilot Machine, Timothy A. Armstrong Dec 1971

Variance Analysis Of Basis Weight Variation On The Pilot Machine, Timothy A. Armstrong

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the significance of the variations of the pilot machine of the Department of Paper Science and Engineering at Western Michigan University by variance analysis conducted on basis weight profiles obtained from the Industrial Nucleonics scanning basis weight gauge. The profiles obtained from the basis weight gauge were subjected to a computer program which computed the cross-direction, machine-direction, and random component variations and determined F-ratios. The F-ratio shows the significance of the component variation. Cross-direction variation was found to decrease with speed. Machine-direction variation showed no significant trend and the random variation decreased …

Carcinoma Of The Fallopian Tube, Victor Gantus, Bruce H. Drukker, C. Paul Hodgkinson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Seven cases of primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube have been reviewed and compared with cases previously reported in the literature. Sterility was present in 51% of patients. There was a variety of symptoms, but the most frequent was vaginal discharge, in 42% of patients. Two patients manifested urinary symptoms and one patient ascites. In six of our seven patients, an adnexal mass was present. Although clinical diagnosis will always be difficult one should be highly suspicious of this disease in patients between 40 and 60 years of age with these symptoms.

The Symmetry-Decision Method Of Eeg Analysis, Richard M. Lee Dec 1971

The Symmetry-Decision Method Of Eeg Analysis, Richard M. Lee

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

An improved version of a previously presented computer analysis for EEG is described. The basic process used in the analysis is the classification of waves according to duration (frequency) and amplitude. The unique aspect of the improved system is the distinction between "simple" waves and "composite" waves, which are slow waves with superimposed higher frequencies. The computer program makes this "decision" on the basis of wave symmetry.

Cecal Diverticulitis In The Japanese, Yasuhiko Kurosu, Tokio Suzuki, Toshinaka Koga

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Four cases of diverticular disease of the colon are reported. The disease is rare in Japan and is more commonly seen in the cecum. Differential diagnosis of right lower quadrant pain and a filling defect in the cecum on x-ray examination is evidence of diverticular disease of the cecum. The future trend of the disease of the colon is predicted as increasing because of older populations, changes in diet and more frequent recognition through barium enema examination.

Effect Of Fertilization And Management On The Production Of Bromegrass In Northeast Nebraska, G. W. Rehm, W. J. Moline, E. J. Schwartz, R. S. Moomaw

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Several experiments were conducted in northeast Nebraska to determine the effect of fertility and management practices on the production of smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss). The effectiveness of the various fertilizer treatments was measured in units of dry matter produced per acre as well as beef produced per acre. Results of these studies showed that the production of bromegrass pastures in Nebraska could be markedly improved through proper fertilization.

The Responses Of Ecologically Dissimilar Populations Of The Water Snake, Natrix Sipedon Sipedon To Surface Extracts Of Prey Species, With Observations On Feeding And Defense Behaviors, Doris Gove

Masters Theses

Observations of defensive and feeding behavior of Natrix sipedon were made in the field and in the lab. Crypticity, mimicry of poisonous snakes, striking, production of cloacal secretion and tail autonomy were defensive behaviors discussed. Feeding behaviors discussed were hunting, catching prey and tongue-flicking.

Experiments were performed on the responses of snakes from ecologically dissimilar populations of N. sipedon to surface extracts of local prey species. The populations were: (1) a laboratory-reared litter of ten one-year-old snakes; (2) six wild-caught snakes from Sterchi's fish hatchery in north Knoxville, Tennessee; and (3) six wild-caught and eight newborn snakes (a litter) from …

Extracellular Production Of Coagulase, Deoxyribonuclease Acid Phosphatase, Alkaline Phosphatase, And Lipase By Staphylococcus Aureus., Robert Lee Nelson

Biology ETDs

The activity of extracellular coagulase, deoxyribonuclease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and lipase for 10 strains of Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. The enzymatic activities were also tested for the presence of a specific enzyme inactivator. The relationship of EH and cell density to the five enzymes was also studied.

The extracellular enzymes used in these experiments were prepared by removing cells by centrifugation from the broth of O, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 hr cultures. Cell numbers were determined by the standard plate count method. Inactivation of specific enzymes was measured by mixing equal volumes of 6 hr broth …
