The Study Of A Laboratory Screw Press Washer As A Means Of Deinking Offset Newsprint At High Consistencies, Kim A. Anderson Dec 1982

The Study Of A Laboratory Screw Press Washer As A Means Of Deinking Offset Newsprint At High Consistencies, Kim A. Anderson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The objective of this thesis is to study a laboratory horizontal screw press washer as an effective, yet economical, means of deinking offset newsprint wastes at high consistencies. The theoretical advantages of utilizing a high consistency deinking process include minimal water consumption, reduced and more concentrated filtrate volumes, low effluent solids and fiber loss, and minimal space requirements. The disadvantages include a relatively high unit power consumption, high capital cost, sometimes an inefficient amount of fillers and fines removed, and ink particles may get trapped at consistencies greater than 18%. Results proved many of these theoretical advantages and disadvantages. Also, …

A Study Of The Flow Of Pulp Slurries Through A Motionless Mixer, Brian F. Berger Dec 1982

A Study Of The Flow Of Pulp Slurries Through A Motionless Mixer, Brian F. Berger

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A study was conducted to determine the behavior of pulp flows through a motionless mixer. Specifically, the effects of stock consistency, pulp type, and number of mixing elements on the pressure drop across a motionless mixer were examined. An attempt was made to develop correlations between pressure drop across the motionless mixer due to pulp flows and the consistency of the pulp slurries. From the data generated by this study, it was determined that using the value of pressure drop across the motionless mixer to determine pulp consistency is not very feasible. However, the empirical data generated should be useful …

A fabric drying facility, using SIPH, is described with respect to the paper drying facility, using SIPH, is described with respect to …

The Effects Of Wet End Chemical Additives On Recycled Filler Furnish, Jeff Oman Dec 1982

The Effects Of Wet End Chemical Additives On Recycled Filler Furnish, Jeff Oman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Improvements in desired characteristics can be seen from wet and chemical additives and will be accompanied by some degree of negative results in other desired characteristics. Lab work is useful in identifying qualitatively the specific areas where negative and positive effects will be seen. The negative results must then be weighted against the positive gains.

The Britt Jar is a powerful tool for predicting pilot machine behavior and should be used with hand sheet data. Pilot machine data is included as verification of Lab findings.

Parental Foraging In Chipping Sparrows (Spizella Passerina), Dora Elisa Perez Dec 1982

Parental Foraging In Chipping Sparrows (Spizella Passerina), Dora Elisa Perez

Masters Theses

During the breeding season of 1982, the population of Chipping Sparrows ( Spizella passerina) that inhabits the Western Michigan University's campus was chosen to study the use of foliage and other foraging sites. Three pairs were selected to be observed intensively.

During the time the female is foraging and when the male is either foraging or in territorial advertisement activities both sexes choose needleleaf trees out of proportion to their availability.

It is also likely that in the later stages of caring for young, when food demands were highest, the birds become less selective and forage on needleleaf trees as …

Generation, Isolation And Assay Methods For Human Lymphocyte Mitogenic Factor, Thomas E. Seay Dec 1982

Generation, Isolation And Assay Methods For Human Lymphocyte Mitogenic Factor, Thomas E. Seay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Activated lymphocytes secrete many products including the lymphokine human lymphocyte mitogenic factor (HLMF). In preliminary experiments lymphocytes from peripheral blood and palatine tonsils were evaluated as possible sources of HLMF by evaluating their level of activation through screening their spontaneous and concanavalin A (con A)-induced blastogenic responses. Tonsil lymphocytes (TL) were found to have high spontaneous proliferation as compared to peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). Cells from both sources responded to con A by undergoing a typical blastogenic response. Because TL must be obtained septically, they are frequently cultured in the presence of the antimycotic agent, Amphotericin B (Am B). Since …

Movement Ecology And Habitat Utilization Of Black Bears In Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee, Charles Rene Villarrubia Dec 1982

Movement Ecology And Habitat Utilization Of Black Bears In Cherokee National Forest, Tennessee, Charles Rene Villarrubia

Masters Theses

Forty-five captures of 28 black bears (Ursus americanus) were made in Cherokee National Forest (CNF), Tennessee between June 1978 and December 1979. Twenty-two bears were fitted with radio-collars.

Bears exhibited a crepuscular activity pattern which was modified seasonally. Higher levels of activity during the day in summer and at night in fall is attributed to bears feeding on available berry and acorn crops. Females with cubs were the most active sex-age group; this is likely related to the high energy demands of raising cubs.

Larger home ranges of males (30.1 km2) than females (11.6 km2 …

The Effect Of Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium Americanum) Upon A Portion Of The Carbon Budget Of Lodgepole Pine (Pinus Contorta), Nancy Ellen Broshot Nov 1982

The Effect Of Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium Americanum) Upon A Portion Of The Carbon Budget Of Lodgepole Pine (Pinus Contorta), Nancy Ellen Broshot

Dissertations and Theses

Arceuthobium americanum is a vascular plant which is parasitic upon Pinus contorta var. murrayana. Its documented effects include reductions in host growth, vigor and wood quality. The specific physiological changes that occur in the host are, for the most part, unknown.

In an attempt to understand the manner in which the mistletoe alters its host's carbon budget, a model is proposed which states that the host plant has priorities for carbon allocation. The model proposes that the parasite will access the host's carbon initially in terms of carbon intended for storage, next, in terms of carbon intended for growth, …

A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis Nov 1982

A Comparison Of The Cardiorespiratory Responses Of Prepubescent Boys And Adult Men To Similar Exercise Programs, Mary Marlene Petratis

Student Work

The cardiorespiratory effects of exercise training in adults have been widely researched (26,39,53,56,57). Through training, the adult experiences an increase in maximum aerobic power (V 02 max), a decrease in resting and submaximum heart rate and an increase in maximum cardiac output (26,36,53,54,59,60). These physiological changes result in an increase in physical working capacity and an enhanced tolerance to all exercise workloads.

Factors contributing to the training effect in the adult include the intensity, the duration, and the frequency of exercise (1, 2). The recommended type of exercise involves activities which use large muscle groups of the body in a …

Reproductive Biology Of The Rat Lungworm Angiostrongylus Cantonensis (Metastrongyloidea: Angiostrongylidae), Grace Spatafora Harris

Master's Theses

Twenty rats (Rattus norvegicus) received infective inocula of 5, 10, 20, and 40 third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The effects of varying doses of larvae on prepatent period larval production, worm establishment, worm size, and fertility were studied. The aquatic gastropod Biomphalaria glabratta was the experimental intermediate host.

The duration of the prepatent period varied from 37 to 45 days. The shortest prepatent period was observed in animals that received the highest infective inoculum. The prepatent period showed a significant inverse relationship with increasing inoculum size. Larval production increased logarithmically, followed by a plateau phase. The number of larvae per …

Chemical and physical parameters were measured with phytoplankton species composition and abundance in the Lafayette River from August to October 1981. Stations located in four distinct areas of the river were statistically analyzed to determine data relationships. Environmental factors considered as potentially influencing the presence and numbers of phytoplankton were salinity, temperature, Secchi depth, tidal phase, orthophosphate, combined nitrates and nitrites, ammonia, and reactive silicates.

The River mouth had higher salinity and nutrient values, with lower temperatures than the other river sections. Diatoms were the dominant cells in this section of the River. At mid-river, salinity and nutrient concentrations decreased, …

Environmental Influence On The Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp In Pamlico Sound North Carolina, Michael Andrew Matylewich Oct 1982

Environmental Influence On The Migratory Behavior Of The Brown Shrimp In Pamlico Sound North Carolina, Michael Andrew Matylewich

OES Theses and Dissertations

Environmental conditions in the nursery areas during times of development affect the migratory behavior of the brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) by influencing growth and natural mortality. A linearized logistic model and a multiple linear model are used to relate environmental factors (week number, water temperature, salinity, air temperature, precipitation, net heating degree days, river discharge) to the cumulative proportion of catch and catch-per-unit-effort, respectively. Multiple regression analysis yielded equations containing the week number, the water temperature and an interaction term as the independent variables. Predictions of total annual yield and total annual catch-per-unit-effort are made using the migratory …

The Relationship Between Chemical Leavening Agents And Three Gastric Indices In Rats Subjected To Restraint Stress, Holly E. Bartelmann Aug 1982

The Relationship Between Chemical Leavening Agents And Three Gastric Indices In Rats Subjected To Restraint Stress, Holly E. Bartelmann

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Male Sprague-Dawley rats fed diets of enriched yeast-leavened biscuits had no discernible advantage over those fed enriched chemically-leavened biscuits in three gastric indices studied. Restraint-stress administered to half of each dietary group was ineffectual in producing gastric ulcers, but did produce gastric color and appearance changes in fifty-eight per cent of the group receiving the chemically-leavened diet.

Thiamin and riboflavin-retention analyses done on various baked products produced conflicting results. Yeast-leavened products retained less thiamin and riboflavin than chemically-leavened products, but which chemical leavening agent was best for vitamin retention was different for each vitamin.

Fidelity Of Dna Polymerase In Vitro, Yannacos C. Philopoulos Aug 1982

Fidelity Of Dna Polymerase In Vitro, Yannacos C. Philopoulos

Dissertations

The fidelity of DNA Polymerase I, isolated from B. licheniformis and B. stearothermophilus, was tested in the presence of carcinogens and anticancer compounds. All of these compounds inhibited (62.4-99.2%) the synthesis of DNA using Poly(dA-dT) as a template. The compounds were inhibitory at all concentration levels tested, 0.01, 1.0 and 100 mM. The fidelity of the enzyme appeared to be enhanced by the presence of these compounds, as indicated by misincorporation (50-70%), that is, the incorporation of incorrect nucleotide. Misincorporation in the presence of either carcinogens or anticancer compounds was less than that of control. The results from both organisms …

Comparison And Correlation Of Four Methods Of Measuring Immunity To Human Cytomegalovirus, James A. Brandt Aug 1982

Comparison And Correlation Of Four Methods Of Measuring Immunity To Human Cytomegalovirus, James A. Brandt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The complement fixation test (CF) is currently the test most often used to determine the presence of antibody to human Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Several more recent techniques have now been adapted for this purpose. A comparison of CMV antibody titers was made between the CF test, a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), an indirect immunofluorescent technique (IFA), and a modified indirect hemagglutination test (IHA). Forty three serum samples were tested for antibodies to CMV by each of the above procedures. The ELISA, IFA, and IHA titers were in close agreement on all samples tested. The ELISA, IFA, and IHA titers …
