A Study Of The Relationship Between The Sugar Content Of Enzyme Converted Starch And Pick Values Of A Coated Sheet, David A. Mrochek

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this experiment was to convert starch by the use of enzyme. The conversion was carried out in a way to produce variations in the reducing sugar contents of the cooked starch. These starches were then applied as the adhesive in a coating mixture. Draw downs were made using the variety of coatings and then the sheets were tested for surface strength. The IGT Pick Tested was used. It was hoped that a definite relationship between sugar contents and pick values could be obtained. This, however, was not the case and the experiment would have to be considered …

Ecological Determination Of The Hour Of Nest Opening By An Ant, A. Dwight Smith Dec 1968

Ecological Determination Of The Hour Of Nest Opening By An Ant, A. Dwight Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The timing of daily opening of the nest entrance by the red harvester ant Popnomyrmex californicus was studied during all four seasons. Multiple regression analysis of several , environmental variables shows that the variation from day to day in mean opening time can be attributed to temperature differences, with the time that a given temperature was reached being the most important single variable for the autumn days studied. An equation incorporating this and the minimum temperature was sufficient to specify the mean opening time to within a few minutes. For the spring days, it was necessary to combine sunrise time …

Effects Of The Mutants Brown And Brown-Dominant On Pteridine Content In Drosophila Melanogaster, Donald M. Evans Sep 1968

Effects Of The Mutants Brown And Brown-Dominant On Pteridine Content In Drosophila Melanogaster, Donald M. Evans

Biology ETDs

The pteridine content of a brown, a brown-dominant, and a wild stock of Drosophila melanogaster was studied. The separation by ascending two-dimensional chromatography of the pteridine substances revealed differences in the number and quantity of pteridines present in these stocks. Differences also were found between pteridine content of heterozygotes and the corresponding homozygotes. The dominance and recessiveness, as reflected in eye color, did not extend to the level of pteridine metabolism, and pteridine substances were found in some heterozygotes that were not present in either homozygous parental stock.

131i Metabolism In The Beagle Dog As Affected By Age And Route Of Exposure, Robert E. Foreman

Biology ETDs

Seven parameters were chosen to characterize131I metabolism in the Beagle, three were derived from the thyroid uptake -retention curve [maximum thyroid uptake, time to 90% maximum uptake, and biological half-life] and four from the two component whole-body131I retention curve [component intercept values, and component half-times]. These parameters were used to compare 131I metabolism in three age groups [6 , 18 , and 48 months], each consisting of six Beagles exposed to a single dose of 131I [ 100-300 µCi] by the inhalation route. An analysis of variance was performed on each parameter in this …

The Effect Of Pregnancy And Lactation On The Iodine Compounds In The Tissues And Plasma Of The Rat, Harry Jay Lyons Aug 1968

The Effect Of Pregnancy And Lactation On The Iodine Compounds In The Tissues And Plasma Of The Rat, Harry Jay Lyons

Theses and Dissertations

An isotopic equilibrium method was employed, based on the chronic feeding of an 125I-labeled diet of known specific activity, to determine the distribution and quantitation of endogenously labeled iodine-containing compounds in the female rat at various periods during gestation and post-parturition. A decrease was associated with gestation in the total iodine, which was significant in all extrathyroidal tissues except the brain and muscle, and a fall in thyroxine concentration which was significant in all extrathyroidal tissues except the heart. The triiodothyronine level decreased from the control values in gestation but not as consistently. There was also a significant decrease in …

The Dispersion Of Titanium Dioxide In Paper, Michael James Gallagher Aug 1968

The Dispersion Of Titanium Dioxide In Paper, Michael James Gallagher

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

It has been recognized in the past that certain means of dispersing titanium dioxide in paper yielded better results. An optimum dispersion is one that results in the best optical efficiency of the pigment in the sheet.

In an attempt to pinpoint the optimum conditions the following facts were revealed. Increased mechanical action on the stock slightly increases the brightness and opacity. Pigment addition to higher consistency stock increases brightness and opacity considerably. The alum agglomerated impurities of soft water slightly increase opacity and decrease brightness in unpigmented papers; do not appreciably change the optical properties of pigmented sheets. Untreated …

Experimental Zoogeography Of Islands, Daniel Simberloff, Edward O. Wilson Aug 1968

Experimental Zoogeography Of Islands, Daniel Simberloff, Edward O. Wilson

Doctoral Dissertations

A technique for insular defaunation utilizing methyl bromide fumigation was evolved. Seven islands in Florida Bay, of varying distance and direction from potential zoogeographic source areas were censused exhaustively. The small size (45 ft. diameter) and ecological simplicity of these islands, which consist solely of red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) trees with no supratidal ground, allowed the determination of all resident species. The completeness of the censuses was corroborated by chloropicrin fumigation. The breeding land fauna of these islands is composed almost exclusively of terrestrial arthropods, with 20-50 species usually present. Surveys of these taxa in the Florida Keys, with emphasis …

Inhibition Of Planarian Regeneration, Douglas Pierre Bingham Aug 1968

Inhibition Of Planarian Regeneration, Douglas Pierre Bingham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes my study of inhibition of brain regeneration in planaria. The flatworm (Dugesia tigrina) possesses a remarkable ability to regenerate lost parts, including the head. The primary objective of my study was to determine the extent to which an inhibiting substance, located in the head, would prevent regeneration of the brain. A secondary objective was to study whether DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) would facilitate the action of the inhibitor.

Factors Influencing Production Of Flower Stalks In Agropyron Cristatum (L.) Gaertn, Neil C. Frischknecht

Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of factors that influence production of different numbers of flower stalks of crested wheatgrass on grazed and ungrazed areas. Both laboratory and field studies were made. Greatest response in flower stalk production resulted from application of nitrogen in the field, amounting to an increase of from 5 to 10 times the numbers of flower stalks on untreated areas. Responses of plants in the greenhouse supported these results. Plants grown in the dark indicated that higher carbohydrate reserves existed in ungrazed than in grazed plants. It was concluded that a high carbohydrate-low nitrogen balance was the primary …

Biophysical And Biochemical Properties Of Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage P3/2, James D. Kettering Aug 1968

Biophysical And Biochemical Properties Of Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage P3/2, James D. Kettering

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Addition of KH2P04 salts to Fraser’s Medium produced higher titers of Salmonella potsdam bacteriophage P3/2, but it failed to maintain stable titers under normal cold storage conditions. The addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) to the medium also produced high titers and helped to maintain phage viability indefinitely in storage. The presence of KH2P04 with the EDTA did not increase the titers nor better the storage properties and was discontinued in favor of EDTA alone. This provided for the accumulation of the necessary amounts of P3/2 for DNA studies.

The phage P3/2 adapted well to purification …

Some Phage Associated Properties In Salmonella Potsdam, Thomas B. Seifert Aug 1968

Some Phage Associated Properties In Salmonella Potsdam, Thomas B. Seifert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The non-lysogenic strain and several lysogenic strains of S. potsdam were tested biochemically and antigenically to detect any possible phage related property.

Fermentation reactions and citrate utilization tests were identical for all strains.

Tubes agglutination tests showed the non-lysogenic and lysogenized strains of SP2-S to be similar, and different from the naturally lysogenic strains SP3, SP4, SP9, and SP10. Absorption tests confirmed the SP2-s strains, either non-lysogenic or lysogenized, to possess an additional antigen SP3 and SP4 did not possess. SP9 and SP10 may contain small amounts of this antigen. From variation may explain the antigenic difference between these strains. …
