A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell Dec 1961

A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell

Doctoral Dissertations

Three of the basic phenomena comprising the meiotic process are synapsis, crossingover, and disjunction. It is generally conceded that some form of pairing must precede crossingover; that the crossingover process occurs prior to disjunction; and that disjunction implies a previous association of elements. Construction of a model describing the causal relations among the three events might be expected to be fairly simple, since the possibilities are limited. Yet, no model has been proposed that is consistent with all the genetic data.

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin Dec 1961

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin

Masters Theses

There have been numerous investigations in which reported observations point toward the existence of metabolic interrelationships between tocopherols, the sulfur-containing amino acids, and inorganic sulfur. In previous work, this laboratory has used mixtures partially composed of oxidized casein and casein to produce a protein source having a low methionine content and lending variation with respect to inorganic sulfate. Alpha protein, a purified soybean protein, is characteristically similar to oxidized casein in that both substances have a low sulfur amino acid content. Due to the expenses involved in the laboratory use of oxidized casein, the present investigation was undertaken to determine …

Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fresh-Water Ostracods Of South-Central Texas, Charles Davidson Wise Sep 1961

Taxonomy And Ecology Of Fresh-Water Ostracods Of South-Central Texas, Charles Davidson Wise

Biology ETDs

The Ostracoda (Gk. ostrakon, a shell, and eidos, form) are extremely interesting crustaceans that differ from most crustaceans in possessing strongly calcified, bivalve carapaces, Ostracods occur in great abundance in all types of waters, both marine and non-marine. With the exception of very transient waters, probably as many as 90% or more of the bodies of fresh water in North America contain ostracods. Because the carapaces are easily fossilized, ostracods are abundant in deposits ranging from the Ordovician to the present.

Some Environmental Features Of Hallett Station, Antarctica, With Special Reference To Soil Arthropods, Madison E. Pryor

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Since Cook's voyage of 1772-1775, numerous expeditions, nationally and independently supported, have explored coastal and inland areas of Antarctica. The primary purpose of most early scientific expeditions was directed toward a study of the physical nature of the continent. In most instances, biologists were not included as expedition personnel and a large portion of the information concerning the flora and fauna of the continent has been contributed by investigators trained in a variety of scientific disciplines. A very few systematic investigations of land flora and soil fauna have been made. In spite of the obvious inadequacy of such investigations, …

Studies On The Morphology And Growh Rate Of The Cestode Hymenolepis Microstoma After Gamma Irradiation Of The Cysticercoids And Eggs, Huldrich H. Kuhlman Aug 1961

Studies On The Morphology And Growh Rate Of The Cestode Hymenolepis Microstoma After Gamma Irradiation Of The Cysticercoids And Eggs, Huldrich H. Kuhlman

Doctoral Dissertations

From the literature on effects of radiation on mammals, insects, and other organisms, it appears that radiation produces abnormalities chiefly by destroying or inhibiting growing cells and tissues. The effects on length of the worms may be due to reduction in cell population responsible for growth. The presence of certain morphological abnormalities which have been observed, particularly those which have been characterized by the absence of one or more reproductive organs, might also be attributed to a change in the growth or embryological apparatus and that radiation only serves to increase the frequency of these disturbances.

The Interrelationship Of Tocopherols And Sulfur Metabolism, Betty June Pendergrass Aug 1961

The Interrelationship Of Tocopherols And Sulfur Metabolism, Betty June Pendergrass

Masters Theses

The metabolic effects of the tocopherols and or sulfur have been inadvertently linked through research findings. Although not initially postulated, a relationship between vitamin B and sulfur has turned up in such phenomena as prevention of dietary hepatic necrosis, muscular dystrophy, erythrocyte hemolysis; and structural alteration of mucopolysaccharides, proteins, and lipoproteins. The relationship between vitamin E and sulfur remains ill-defined at present; the available information has been obtained as a by-product of research efforts oriented toward other goals. However, an increasing body of evidence indicates that significant behavioral interactions may occur. The present investigation was designed to evaluate possible interrelationships …

Factors Affecting The Performance Of Broilers, G. R. Nair Aug 1961

Factors Affecting The Performance Of Broilers, G. R. Nair

Masters Theses

The efficiency of broiler production has increased greatly in recent years and can be attributed to advancements in the areas of breeding, management, nutrition, and disease control. No single factor in any one of these areas can be said to account for the major share of this increased efficiency but rather it is the combination of a large number of factors such as breeding techniques, and breed improvement, of improved management practices, and of advances in nutrition and disease control.

The optimum combination of conditions or factors for broiler production is seldom, if ever, realized. Information which might have been …

Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk Jul 1961

Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk

Master's Theses

Studies ware made of the effects of temperature and nutrient levels on salinity optima for growth and sporulation of Chaotomium Globosum and two marine Pyranomycetes, Torpedospora radiata, and Halosphaeriopais sp. Methods of culture and evaluation of sporulation were also investigated.

Discussion focused on ecological implications of data, in particular, on the probable survival value to a marine-fit fungus or a Phoma pattern mechanism-envolving vegetative and reproductive phases. As the seasons progress, the region where concentrations and proportions or salts are most favorable remains similar to that where vitamin requirements are least and biotic factors are most favorable.

Introducing Aquatic Ecology To Ninth Graders, Inez P. Sutton Jul 1961

Introducing Aquatic Ecology To Ninth Graders, Inez P. Sutton

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

In discussing the basis for teaching high school biology, Van Deventer1 states, "...the present typical course in high school biology serves adequately neither the terminal student nor the college entrance student." He holds that today's courses present watered-down versions of college courses to the student before the intelligence of the student has matured enough to grasp such subject matter. As a result there is very little carry-over value from such courses, and the students may even develop a dislike for biology. This study constitutes an effort to understand these problems and to devise ways of solving …

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas Jul 1961

Evaluation Of Hydroxyprogesterone Acetate In The Prevention Of Canine Estrus, Kenneth B. Haas

Masters Theses

Foreword

Thirty years ago, endocrinology was a laboratory curiosity appreciated by few veterinarians. In those rare instances when the new science escaped from the laboratory and reached the clinic, the endocrine preparations used were extremely crude and often ineffective. In the growth of endocrinology as a science, availability of pure crystalline hormones has played an essential role, and to chemical synthesis must be credited the preparations which make specific endocrine therapy possible today.

In the last two decades endocrinology has come into its own in veterinary medicine, especially in regard to sex endocrinology. But only in the last ten years …

The experimental results indicated that by hydrogenating tall oil soap, a whiter, less oily material is obtainable. Handsheets were prepared using this hydrogenated material, the starting material, and rosin size as sizing agents. It was found that the handsheets sized with the hydrogenated material had …

Deinking Of Coated Magazine Papers: Experiments With Some Enzymes, Edgar E. Moore Jr. Jun 1961

Deinking Of Coated Magazine Papers: Experiments With Some Enzymes, Edgar E. Moore Jr.

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

At the present time fairly harsh procedures are used to deink magazine waste paper. The paper must be cooked in the presence of strong chemicals such as sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and in some cases this is even carried out under pressure. This results in the removal of ink but the fibers are considerably darkened due to this procedure (1,2). It was the object of this survey to explore the literature to see if there is any information on a relatively mild method involving enzymes, which due to the absence of harsh chemicals and high temperatures would possibly …
